Hebrews 12

1 Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that hath endured such gainsaying of sinners against himself, that ye wax not weary, fainting in your souls. 4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin: 5 and ye have forgotten the exhortation which reasoneth with you as with sons,

My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord,

Nor faint when thou art reproved of him;

6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth,

And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

7 It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father chasteneth not? 8 But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness. 11 All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, even the fruit of righteousness. 12 Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the palsied knees; 13 and make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame be not turned out of the way, but rather be healed.

14 Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest there be any man that falleth short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby the many be defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one mess of meat sold his own birthright. 17 For ye know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place for a change of mind in his father, though he sought it diligently with tears.

18 For ye are not come unto a mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard entreated that no word more should be spoken unto them; 20 for they could not endure that which was enjoined, If even a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned; 21 and so fearful was the appearance, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake: 22 but ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable hosts of angels, 23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24 and to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better than that of Abel. 25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not when they refused him that warned them on earth, much more shall not we escape who turn away from him that warneth from heaven: 26 whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more will I make to tremble not the earth only, but also the heaven. 27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain. 28 Wherefore, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us have grace, whereby we may offer service well-pleasing to God with reverence and awe: 29 for our God is a consuming fire.

1 Nous donc aussi, puisque nous sommes environnés d’une si grande nuée de témoins, rejetant tout fardeau, et le péché qui nous enveloppe aisément, poursuivons constamment la course qui nous est proposée,

2 Regardant à Jésus, le chef et le consommateur de la foi, qui, à cause de la joie qui lui était proposée, a souffert la croix, méprisant l’ignominie, et s’est assis à la droite du trône de Dieu.

3 C’est pourquoi, considérez bien celui qui a souffert une si grande contradiction des pécheurs, afin que vous ne vous abattiez pas en perdant courage.

4 Vous n’avez pas encore résisté jusqu’au sang, en combattant contre le péché.

5 Et vous avez oublié l’exhortation qui vous dit, comme à des enfants de Dieu: Mon enfant, ne méprise pas le châtiment du Seigneur, et ne perds point courage, lorsqu’il te reprend;

6 Car le Seigneur châtie celui qu’il aime, et il frappe de ses verges tous ceux qu’il reconnaît pour ses enfants.

7 Si vous souffrez le châtiment, Dieu vous traite comme ses enfants; car quel est l’enfant que son père ne châtie pas?

8 Mais si vous êtes exempts du châtiment auquel tous les autres ont part, vous êtes donc des bâtards, et non des enfants légitimes.

9 Et puisque nos pères selon la chair nous ont châtiés, et que nous avons eu du respect pour eux, ne serons-nous pas beaucoup plus soumis au Père des esprits, pour avoir la vie?

10 Car quant à nos pères, ils nous châtiaient pour un eu de temps, comme ils le trouvaient bon; mais Dieu nous châtie pour notre profit, afin de nous rendre participants de sa sainteté.

11 I1 est vrai que tout châtiment semble d’abord un sujet de tristesse, et non pas de joie; mais il produit ensuite un fruit paisible de justice à ceux qui ont été ainsi exercés.

12 Fortifiez donc vos mains qui sont affaiblies, et vos genoux qui sont relâchés;

13 Et faites à vos pieds un chemin droit, afin que ce qui cloche ne se dévoie pas tout à fait, mais que plutôt il se rétablisse

14 Recherchez la paix avec tout le monde, et la sanctification, sans laquelle personne ne verra le Seigneur;

15 Prenant garde que personne ne se prive de la grâce de Dieu; et que quelque racine d’amertume poussant en haut, ne sous trouble, et que plusieurs n’en soient infectés.

16 Qu’il n’y ait point d’impur, ni de profane comme Esaü, qui, pour un mets, vendit son droit d’aînesse.

17 Car vous savez que même après cela, voulant hériter la bénédiction de son père, il fut rejeté, car il ne put trouver le moyen de le faire changer de résolution, quoiqu’il le demandât avec larmes.

18 Car vous ne vous êtes pas approchés de la montagne qu’on pouvait toucher avec la main, ni du feu brûlant, ni de la nuée épaisse, ni de l’obscurité, ni de la tempête,

19 Ni du bruit de la trompette, ni de la voix qui parlait, et qui était telle que ceux qui l’entendirent, prièrent que la parole ne leur fût plus adessée.

20 Car ils ne pouvaient supporter ce qui était ordonné, que si même une bête touchait la montagne, elle serait lapidée ou percée d’un dard.

21 Et ce qui paraissait était si terrible, que Moïse même dit: Je suis effrayé et tout tremblant.

22 Mais vous êtes venus à la montagne de Sion, à la cité du Dieu vivant, à la Jérusalem céleste, aux milliers d’anges;

23 A l’assemblée et à l’Eglise des premiers-nés, qui sont écrits dans les cieux; à Dieu qui est le juge de tous; aux esprits des justes qui sont parvenus à la perfection;

24 Et à Jésus, le Médiateur de la nouvelle alliance, et au sang de l’aspersion, qui prononce de meilleures choses que celui d’Abel.

25 Prenez garde de ne pas mépriser celui qui vous parle; car si ceux qui méprisaient celui qui parlait de la part de Dieu sur la terre, ne sont point échappés, nous serons punis beaucoup plus, si nous nous détournons de celui qui nous parle des cieux;

26 De qui la voix ébranla alors la terre, et qui maintenant a fait cette promesse. Encore une fois, j’ébranlerai non-seulement la terre, mais aussi le ciel.

27 Or, ces mots: Encore une fois, marquent l’abolition des choses muables, comme n’ayant été faites que pour faire place à celles qui sont immuables et qui subsisteront toujours.

28 C’est pourquoi, embrassant le royaume qui ne peut être ébranlé, conservons la grâce par laquelle nous puissions servir Dieu d’une manière qui lui soit agréable, avec respect et avec crainte;

29 Car notre Dieu est aussi un feu consumant.
