Hebrews 11

1 Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, a conviction of things not seen. 2 For therein the elders had witness borne to them. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds have been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen hath not been made out of things which appear. 4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he had witness borne to him that he was righteous, God bearing witness in respect of his gifts: and through it he being dead yet speaketh. 5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and he was not found, because God translated him: for he hath had witness borne to him that before his translation he had been well-pleasing unto God: 6 and without faith it is impossible to be well-pleasing unto him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that seek after him. 7 By faith Noah, being warned of God concerning things not seen as yet, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; through which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. 8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out unto a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9 By faith he became a sojourner in the land of promise, as in a land not his own, dwelling in tents, with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 for he looked for the city which hath the foundations, whose builder and maker is God. 11 By faith even Sarah herself received power to conceive seed when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised: 12 wherefore also there sprang of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of heaven in multitude, and as the sand, which is by the sea-shore, innumerable.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For they that say such things make it manifest that they are seeking after a country of their own. 15 And if indeed they had been mindful of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God; for he hath prepared for them a city.

17 By faith Abraham, being tried, offered up Isaac: yea, he that had gladly received the promises was offering up his only begotten son; 18 even he to whom it was said, In Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19 accounting that God is able to raise up, even from the dead; from whence he did also in a figure receive him back. 20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even concerning things to come. 21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff. 22 By faith Joseph, when his end was nigh, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones. 23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months by his parents, because they saw he was a goodly child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment. 24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; 25 choosing rather to share ill treatment with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; 26 accounting the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt: for he looked unto the recompense of reward. 27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of the blood, that the destroyer of the firstborn should not touch them. 29 By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were swallowed up. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been compassed about for seven days. 31 By faith Rahab the harlot perished not with them that were disobedient, having received the spies with peace.

32 And what shall I more say? for the time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah; of David and Samuel and the prophets: 33 who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, waxed mighty in war, turned to flight armies of aliens. 35 Women received their dead by a resurrection: and others were tortured, not accepting their deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: 36 and others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: 37 they were stoned, they were sawn asunder, they were tempted, they were slain with the sword: they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated 38 (of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves, and the holes of the earth. 39 And these all, having had witness borne to them through their faith, received not the promise, 40 God having provided some better thing concerning us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

2 Car par elle les anciens ont obtenu un bon témoignage.

3 C’est par la foi que nous savons que le monde a été fait par la parole de Dieu; en sorte que les choses qui se voient n’ont pas été faites de choses qui parussent.

4 C’est par la foi qu’Abel et offrit à Dieu un plus excellent sacrifice que Cain, et qu’il obtint le témoignage d’être juste, Dieu rendant un bon témoignage à ses offrandes; et quoique mort, il parle encore par elle.

5 C’est par la foi qu’Hénoc fut enlevé pour ne point mourir, et il ne parut plus, parce que Dieu l’avait enlevé; car avant que d’être enlevé, il avait obtenu le témoignage d’être agréable à Dieu.

6 Or, il est impossible de lui être agréable sans la foi, car il faut que celui qui s’approche de Dieu, croie que Dieu est, et qu’il est le rémunérateur de ceux qui le cherchent.

7 C’est par la foi que Noé, ayant été divinement averti des choses qu’on ne voyait point encore, craignit, et bâtit l’arche pour sauver sa famille; et par cette arche il condamna le monde, et fut fait héritier de la justice qui s’obtient par la foi.

8 C’est par la foi, qu’Abraham, étant appelé, obéit, pour venir au pays qu’il devait recevoir pour héritage; et il partit, ne sachant où allait.

9 C’est par la foi, qu’il demeura comme étranger dans la terre qui lui avait été promise, habitant sous des tentes, aussi bien qu’Isaac et Jacob, qui étaient héritiers avec lui de la même promesse.

10 Car il attendait la cité qui a des fondements, et de laquelle Dieu est l’architecte et le fondateur.

11 C’est aussi par la foi que Sara reçut la vertu de concevoir et qu’elle enfanta, étant hors d’âge d’avoir des enfants, parce qu’elle crut que celui qui le lui avait promis était fidèle.

12 C’est pourquoi il est né d’un seul homme, et qui était déjà affaibli par l’âge, une multitude aussi nombreuse que les étoiles du ciel, et que le sable innombrable qui est au bord de la mer.

13 Tous ceux-là sont morts dans la foi; sans avoir reçu les choses qui leur avaient été promises, mais les ayant vues de loin, crues, et embrassées, et ayant fait profession d’être étrangers et voyageurs sur la terre.

14 Car ceux qui parlent ainsi, montrent clairement qu’ils cherchent leur patrie.

15 En effet, s’ils eussent eu en vue celle d’où ils étaient sortis, ils avaient assez de temps pour y retourner;

16 Mais ils en désiraient une meilleure, qui est la céleste; c’est pourquoi Dieu ne dédaigne pas de s’appeler leur Dieu, car il leur avait préparé une cité.

17 C’est par la foi qu’Abraham offrit Isaac, lorsqu’il fut éprouvé, et que celui qui avait reçu les promesses, offrit son fils unique;

18 A l’égard duquel il avait été dit: C’est en Isaac que ta postérité sera appelée de ton nom;

19 Ayant pensé en lui-même, que Dieu pouvait ressusciter Isaac des morts; aussi le recouvra-t-il par une espèce de résurrection.

20 C’est par la foi qu’Isaac donna à Jacob et Esaü une bénédiction qui regardait l’avenir.

21 C’est par la foi, que Jacob mourant bénit les deux fils de Joseph, et adora, étant appuyé sur le haut de son bâton.

22 C’est par la foi, que Joseph mourant parla de la sortie des enfants d’Israël, et qu’il donna des ordres touchant ses os.

23 C’est par la foi que Moïse, étant né, fut caché pendant trois mois par son père et sa mère, parce qu’ils voyaient que c’était un bel enfant; et ils ne craignirent point l’édit du roi.

24 C’est par la foi que Moïse, devenu grand, renonça à la qualité de fils de la fille de Pharaon;

25 Choisissant plutôt d’être affligé avec le peuple de Dieu, que de jouir pour un peu de temps des délices du péché;

26 Et regardant l’opprobre de Christ comme des richesses plus grandes que les trésors de l’Egypte, parce qu’il avait en vue la rémunération.

27 C’est par la foi qu’il quitta l’Egypte, sans craindre la colère du roi; car il demeura ferme, comme voyant celui qui est invisible.

28 C’est par la foi qu’il célébra la Pâque et qu’if fit l’aspersion du sang, afin que le destructeur qui tuait les premiers-nés, ne touchât point ceux des israélites.

29 C’est par la foi, qu’ils passèrent par la mer Rouge comme par un lieu sec; ce que les Egyptiens ayant voulu tenter, ils furent submergés.

30 C’est par la foi que les murailles de Jéricho tombèrent, après qu’on en eut fait le tour pendant sept jours.

31 C’est par la foi que Rahab l’hôtelière ne périt point avec les incrédules, parce qu’elle reçut les espions et les mit en sûreté.

32 Et que dirai-je encore? Car le temps me manquerait, si je voulais parler de Gédéon, de Barac, de Samson, de Jephthé, de David, de Samuel, et des prophètes;

33 Qui, par la foi, ont conquis des royaumes, ont exercé la justice, ont obtenu l’effet des promesses, ont fermé la gueule des lions,

34 Ont éteint la force du feu, ont échappé au tranchant des épées, ont été guéris de leurs maladies, ont été vaillants pendant la guerre, ont mis en fuite des armées ennemies.

35 Des femmes ont recouvré par la résurrection leurs enfants morts; d’autres ont été cruellement tourmentés, refusant d’être délivrés, afin d’obtenir une meilleure résurrection;

36 D’autres ont été éprouvés par les moqueries et les fouets; d’autres, par les liens et par la prison;

37 Ils ont été lapidés, ils ont été sciés, ils ont été mis à toutes sortes d’épreuves, ils sont morts par le tranchant de l’épée, ils ont été errants çà et là, vêtus de peaux de brebis et de peaux de chèvres, destitués de tout, affligés, maltraités;

38 Eux dont le monde n’était pas digne; ils ont erré dans les déserts et dans les montagnes, se cachant dans les cavernes et les antres de la terre.

39 Et tous ceux-là ayant obtenu un bon témoignage par leur foi, n’ont point reçu ce qui leur avait été promis;

40 Dieu ayant pourvu quelque chose de meilleur pour nous, afin qu’ils ne parvinssent pas à la perfection sans nous.
