1 A pobreza fez cair vários deles no pecado. Quem procura enriquecer afasta os olhos de Deus.

2 Como se enterra um pau entre as junturas das pedras, assim penetra o pecado entre a venda e a compra.

3 O pecado será esmagado com o pecador.

4 Se não te aferrares firmemente no temor ao Senhor, tua casa em breve será destruída.

5 Quando se sacode a joeira, só ficam refugos; assim a perplexidade permanece no pensamento do homem.

6 A fornalha experimenta as jarras do oleiro; a prova do infortúnio, os homens justos.

7 O cuidado aplicado a uma árvore mostra-se no fruto; assim a palavra manifesta o que vai no coração do homem.

8 Não louves um homem antes que ele tenha falado, pois é assim que se experimentam os humanos.

9 Se procurares a justiça, hás de consegui-la, e dela te revestirás como de um manto de festa. Habitarás com ela, ela te protegerá para sempre; e, no dia do juízo, nela encontrarás apoio.

10 As aves chegam-se aos seus semelhantes; assim a verdade volta àqueles que a põem em prática.

11 O leão está sempre à espreita de uma presa; assim o pecado, para aqueles que praticam a iniquidade.

12 O homem santo permanece na sabedoria, estável como o sol; mas o insensato é inconstante como a lua.

13 Na companhia dos tolos, guarda tuas palavras para outra ocasião. Sê de preferência assíduo junto às pessoas ponderadas.

14 A conversação dos pecadores é odiosa; eles se alegram nas delícias do pecado.

15 Uma linguagem cheia de blasfêmias é horripilante, e sua grosseria fará com que não queiramos ouvi-la.

16 Uma disputa entre orgulhosos faz correr sangue; suas injúrias fazem sofrer os ouvidos.

17 Quem revela o segredo de um amigo perde a sua confiança, e não mais achará amigos que lhe convenham.

18 Ama o teu próximo e sê fiel na amizade com ele;

19 se desvendares seus segredos, em vão correrás atrás dele,

20 pois, como um homem que mata seu amigo, assim é o que destrói a amizade do próximo;

21 como um homem que solta o pássaro que tem na mão, assim abandonaste o teu próximo, e não mais o encontrarás.

22 Não o persigas, já está longe; escapou-se como uma gazela da armadilha. Porque a sua alma foi ferida,

23 e não mais poderás curar sua ferida. Depois de uma injúria pode haver reconciliação;

24 desvendar, porém, os segredos de um amigo é um desespero para a alma desventurada.

25 Aquele que tem um olhar lisonjeiro trama negros propósitos, e ninguém pode afastá-lo de si.

26 Em tua presença só terá doçura nos lábios, admirará tudo o que disseres; mas em breve mudará sua linguagem e armará laços às tuas palavras.

27 Abomino muitas coisas, porém nada tanto quanto ele; o Senhor também o detesta.

28 Quem lança uma pedra no ar a vê recair sobre sua cabeça; a ofensa feita por traição atingirá também o traidor.

29 Quem cava uma fossa cairá nela; quem põe uma pedra no caminho do próximo nela tropeçará; quem arma uma cilada a outrem nela será apanhado.

30 O desígnio criminoso volta-se contra o seu autor, que não saberá de onde lhe vem o mal.

31 A zombaria e a ofensa são próprias dos orgulhosos; a vingança os espreita como um leão.

32 Aqueles que escarnecem do pecado dos justos serão apanhados no laço, e a dor os consumirá ainda vivos.

33 Cólera e furor são ambos execráveis; o homem pecador os alimenta em si mesmo.

1 Many have sinned for a small matter; and he that seeketh for abundance will turn his eyes away.

2 As a nail sticketh fast between the joinings of the stones; so doth sin stick close between buying and selling.

3 Unless a man hold himself diligently in the fear of the Lord, his house shall soon be overthrown.

4 As when one sifteth with a sieve, the refuse remaineth; so the filth of man in his talk.

5 The furnace proveth the potter’s vessels; so the trial of man is in his reasoning.

6 The fruit declareth if the tree have been dressed; so is the utterance of a conceit in the heart of man.

7 Praise no man before thou hearest him speak; for this is the trial of men.

8 If thou followest righteousness, thou shalt obtain her, and put her on, as a glorious long robe.

9 The birds will resort unto their like; so will truth return unto them that practise in her.

10 As the lion lieth in wait for the prey; so sin for them that work iniquity.

11 The discourse of a godly man is always with wisdom; but a fool changeth as the moon.

12 If thou be among the indiscreet, observe the time; but be continually among men of understanding.

13 The discourse of fools is irksome, and their sport is the wantonness of sin.

14 The talk of him that sweareth much maketh the hair stand upright; and their brawls make one stop his ears.

15 The strife of the proud is bloodshedding, and their revilings are grievous to the ear.

16 Whoso discovereth secrets loseth his credit; and shall never find friend to his mind.

17 Love thy friend, and be faithful unto him: but if thou betrayest his secrets, follow no more after him.

18 For as a man hath destroyed his enemy; so hast thou lost the love of thy neighbor.

19 As one that letteth a bird go out of his hand, so hast thou let thy neighbour go, and shalt not get him again

20 Follow after him no more, for he is too far off; he is as a roe escaped out of the snare.

21 As for a wound, it may be bound up; and after reviling there may be reconcilement: but he that betrayeth secrets is without hope.

22 He that winketh with the eyes worketh evil: and he that knoweth him will depart from him.

23 When thou art present, he will speak sweetly, and will admire thy words: but at the last he will writhe his mouth, and slander thy sayings.

24 I have hated many things, but nothing like him; for the Lord will hate him.

25 Whoso casteth a stone on high casteth it on his own head; and a deceitful stroke shall make wounds.

26 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that setteth a trap shall be taken therein.

27 He that worketh mischief, it shall fall upon him, and he shall not know whence it cometh.

28 Mockery and reproach are from the proud; but vengeance, as a lion, shall lie in wait for them.

29 They that rejoice at the fall of the righteous shall be taken in the snare; and anguish shall consume them before they die.

30 Malice and wrath, even these are abominations; and the sinful man shall have them both.
