1 It was now two days before the feast of the Passover and the unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes made designs how they might take him by deceit and put him to death:
2 But they said, Not while the feast is going on, for fear there may be trouble among the people.
3 And while he was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, seated at table, there came a woman with a bottle of perfumed oil of great price; and when the bottle was broken she put the perfume on his head.
4 But some of them were angry among themselves, saying, For what purpose has this oil been wasted?
5 We might have got more than three hundred pence for it, and given the money to the poor. And they said things against her among themselves.
6 But Jesus said, Let her be; why are you troubling her? she has done a kind act to me.
7 The poor you have ever with you, and whenever you have the desire you may do them good: but me you have not for ever.
8 She has done what she was able: she has put oil on my body to make it ready for its last resting-place.
9 And truly I say to you, Wherever the good news goes out through all the earth, what this woman has done will be talked of in memory of her.
10 And Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests, so that he might give him up to them.
11 And hearing what he said, they were glad, and gave him their word to make him a payment of money. And he took thought how he might best give him up to them.
12 And on the first day of unleavened bread, when the Passover lamb is put to death, his disciples said to him, Where are we to go and make ready for you to take the Passover meal?
13 And he sent two of his disciples, and said to them, Go into the town, and there will come to you a man with a vessel of water: go after him;
14 And wherever he goes in, say to the owner of the house, The Master says, Where is my guest-room, where I may take the Passover with my disciples?
15 And he will take you up himself to a great room with a table and seats: there make ready for us.
16 And the disciples went out and came into the town, and saw that it was as he had said: and they made ready the Passover.
17 And when it was evening he came with the twelve.
18 And while they were seated taking food, Jesus said, Truly I say to you, One of you will be false to me, one who is taking food with me.
19 They were sad, and said to him one by one, Is it I?
20 And he said to them, It is one of the twelve, one who is putting his bread with me into the same plate.
21 The Son of man goes, even as the Writings say of him: but cursed is that man through whom the Son of man is given up! It would have been well for that man if he had never been given birth.
22 And while they were taking food, he took bread, and after blessing it, he gave the broken bread to them, and said, Take it: this is my body.
23 And he took a cup, and when he had given praise, he gave it to them: and they all had a drink from it.
24 And he said to them, This is my blood of the testament, which is given for men.
25 Truly I say to you, I will take no more of the fruit of the vine till the day when I take it new in the kingdom of God.
26 And after a song of praise to God they went out to the Mountain of Olives.
27 And Jesus said to them, You will all be turned away from me: for it is in the Writings, I will put the keeper of the sheep to death, and the sheep will be put to flight.
28 But after I have come back from the dead, I will go before you into Galilee.
29 But Peter said to him, Though the others may be turned away from you, I will not.
30 And Jesus said to him, Truly, I say to you that you, today, even this night, before the cock's second cry, will say three times that you have no knowledge of me.
31 But he said with passion, If I have to be put to death with you, I will not be false to you. And they all said the same.
32 And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he said to his disciples, Be seated here while I say a prayer.
33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and grief and great trouble came on him.
34 And he said to them, My soul is very sad, even to death: be here a little time, and keep watch.
35 And he went forward a little, and falling down on the earth, made request that, if possible, the hour might go from him.
36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible to you; take away this cup from me: but even so let not my pleasure, but yours be done.
37 And he came, and saw them sleeping, and said to Peter, Simon, are you sleeping? were you not able to keep watch one hour?
38 Keep watch with prayer, so that you may not be put to the test; the spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is feeble.
39 And again he went away, and said a prayer, using the same words.
40 And again he came and saw them sleeping, because their eyes were very tired; and they had nothing to say in answer.
41 And he came the third time, and said to them, Go on sleeping now and take your rest: it is enough; the hour has come; see, the Son of man is given up into the hands of evil men.
42 Get up, let us be going; see, he who gives me up is near.
43 And straight away, while he was still talking, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great band with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and the scribes and those in authority.
44 Now he who had been false to him had given them a sign, saying, The one to whom I give a kiss, that is he; take him, and get him away safely.
45 And when he had come, he went straight to him and said, Master; and gave him a kiss.
46 And they put their hands on him, and took him.
47 But a certain one of those who were near took out his sword, and gave the servant of the high priest a blow, cutting off his ear.
48 And Jesus said to them, Have you come out as against a thief, with swords and sticks to take me?
49 I was with you every day in the Temple teaching, and you did not take me; but this is done so that the Writings may come true.
50 And they all went away from him in fear.
51 And a certain young man went after him, with only a linen cloth about his body; and they put their hands on him;
52 But he got away unclothed, without the linen cloth.
53 And they took Jesus away to the high priest; and there came together with him all the chief priests and those in authority and the scribes.
54 And Peter had come after him at a distance, even into the house of the high priest; and he was seated with the captains, warming himself in the light of the fire.
55 Now the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin were looking for witness against Jesus so that they might put him to death; and they were unable to get any.
56 For a number gave false witness against him and their witness was not in agreement.
57 Then some got up and gave false witness against him, saying,
58 He said in our hearing, I will put an end to this Temple which is made with hands, and in three days I will make another without hands.
59 And even so their witness was not in agreement.
60 And the high priest got up in the middle of them, and said to Jesus, Do you say nothing in answer? what is it which these say against you?
61 But he kept quiet and said nothing. Again the high priest questioning him said, Are you the Christ, the son of the Holy One?
62 And Jesus said, I am: and you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.
63 And the high priest, violently parting his robes, said, What more need have we of witnesses?
64 His words against God have come to your ears: what is your opinion? And they all said it was right for him to be put to death.
65 And some put shame on him and, covering his face, gave him blows and said to him, Now say what is to come: and the captains took him and gave him blows with their hands.
66 And while Peter was down in the open square of the building, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came;
67 And seeing Peter warming himself by the fire, she gave him a look, and said, You were with this Nazarene, even Jesus.
68 But he said, I have no knowledge of him, or of what you are saying: and he went out into the doorway; and there came the cry of a cock.
69 And the girl saw him, and said again to those who were near, This is one of them.
70 But again he said it was not so. And after a little time, again those who were near said to Peter, Truly you are one of them; for you are a Galilaean.
71 But, with curses and oaths, he said, I have no knowledge of the man about whom you are talking.
72 And in the same minute, the cock gave a second cry. And it came to Peter's mind how Jesus had said to him, Before the cock's second cry, you will say three times that you have no knowledge of me. And at this thought he was overcome with weeping.
1 Es war aber nach zwei Tagen das Passah und das Fest der ungesäuerten Brote. {W. und das Ungesäuerte} Und die Hohenpriester und die Schriftgelehrten suchten, wie sie ihn mit List griffen und töteten;
2 denn sie sagten: Nicht an dem Feste, damit nicht etwa ein Aufruhr des Volkes entstehe.
3 Und als er in Bethanien war, in dem Hause Simons, des Aussätzigen, kam, während er zu Tische lag, ein Weib, die ein Alabasterfläschchen mit Salbe von echter, {O. flüssiger} kostbarer Narde hatte; und sie zerbrach das Fläschchen und goß es auf sein Haupt.
4 Es waren aber etliche unwillig bei sich selbst und sprachen: Wozu ist dieser Verlust der Salbe geschehen?
5 Denn diese Salbe hätte für mehr als dreihundert Denare verkauft und den Armen gegeben werden können. Und sie zürnten mit ihr.
6 Jesus aber sprach: Lasset sie; was machet ihr ihr Mühe? Sie hat ein gutes Werk an mir getan;
7 denn die Armen habt ihr allezeit bei euch, und wenn ihr wollt, könnt ihr ihnen wohltun; mich aber habt ihr nicht allezeit.
8 Sie hat getan, was sie vermochte; sie hat zum voraus meinen Leib zum Begräbnis {O. zur Einbalsamierung} gesalbt.
9 Und wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wo irgend dieses Evangelium gepredigt werden wird in der ganzen Welt, wird auch von dem geredet werden, was diese getan hat, zu ihrem Gedächtnis.
10 Und Judas Iskariot, einer von den Zwölfen, ging hin zu den Hohenpriestern, auf daß er ihn denselben überlieferte.
11 Sie aber freuten sich, als sie es hörten, und versprachen, ihm Geld zu geben; und er suchte, wie er ihn zu gelegener Zeit überliefern könnte.
12 Und an dem ersten Tage der ungesäuerten Brote, da man das Passah schlachtete, sagen seine Jünger zu ihm: Wo willst du, daß wir hingehen und bereiten, auf daß du das Passah essest?
13 Und er sendet zwei seiner Jünger und spricht zu ihnen: Gehet hin in die Stadt, und es wird euch ein Mensch begegnen, der einen Krug Wasser trägt; folget ihm.
14 Und wo irgend er hineingeht, sprechet zu dem Hausherrn: Der Lehrer sagt: Wo ist mein Gastzimmer, wo ich mit meinen Jüngern das Passah essen mag?
15 Und derselbe wird euch einen großen Obersaal zeigen, mit Polstern belegt und fertig; daselbst bereitet für uns.
16 Und seine Jünger gingen aus und kamen in die Stadt und fanden es, wie er ihnen gesagt hatte; und sie bereiteten das Passah.
17 Und als es Abend geworden war, kommt er mit den Zwölfen.
18 Und während sie zu Tische lagen und aßen, sprach Jesus: Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Einer von euch wird mich überliefern, der, welcher mit mir isset.
19 Sie aber fingen an, betrübt zu werden und einer nach dem anderen zu ihm zu sagen: Doch nicht ich? [und ein anderer: Doch nicht, ich?]
20 Er aber antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Einer von den Zwölfen, der mit mir in die Schüssel eintaucht.
21 Der Sohn des Menschen geht zwar dahin, wie über ihn geschrieben steht; wehe aber jenem Menschen, durch welchen der Sohn des Menschen überliefert wird! Es wäre jenem Menschen gut, wenn er nicht geboren wäre.
22 Und während sie aßen, nahm Jesus Brot, segnete {O. lobpries, dankte} und brach und gab es ihnen und sprach: Nehmet; dieses ist mein Leib.
23 Und er nahm [den] Kelch, dankte und gab ihnen denselben; und sie tranken alle daraus.
24 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Dieses ist mein Blut, das des [neuen] Bundes, welches für viele vergossen wird.
25 Wahrlich, ich sage euch, daß ich hinfort nicht mehr von dem Gewächs des Weinstocks trinken werde bis an jenem Tage, da ich es neu trinken werde in dem Reiche Gottes.
26 Und als sie ein Loblied gesungen hatten, gingen sie hinaus nach dem Ölberg.
27 Und Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Ihr werdet euch alle ärgern, denn es steht geschrieben: "Ich werde den Hirten schlagen, und die Schafe werden zerstreut werden". {Sach. 13,7}
28 Nachdem ich aber auferweckt sein werde, werde ich vor euch hingehen nach Galiläa.
29 Petrus aber sprach zu ihm: Wenn sich auch alle ärgern werden, ich aber nicht.
30 Und Jesus spricht zu ihm: Wahrlich, ich sage dir, daß du heute, in dieser Nacht, ehe der Hahn zweimal kräht, mich dreimal verleugnen wirst.
31 Er aber sprach über die Maßen, [mehr]: Wenn ich mit dir sterben müßte, werde ich dich nicht verleugnen. Desgleichen aber sprachen auch alle.
32 Und sie kommen an einen Ort, mit Namen Gethsemane, und er spricht zu seinen Jüngern: Setzet euch hier, bis ich gebetet habe. {O. während ich bete}
33 Und er nimmt den Petrus und Jakobus und Johannes mit sich und fing an, sehr bestürzt und beängstigt zu werden.
34 Und er spricht zu ihnen: Meine Seele ist sehr betrübt, bis zum Tode; bleibet hier und wachet.
35 Und er ging ein wenig weiter und fiel auf die Erde; und er betete, daß, wenn es möglich wäre, die Stunde an {W. von} ihm vorübergehe.
36 Und er sprach: Abba, Vater, alles ist dir möglich; nimm diesen Kelch von mir weg; doch nicht was ich will, sondern was du willst!
37 Und er kommt und findet sie schlafend, und er spricht zu Petrus: Simon, schläfst du? Vermochtest du nicht eine Stunde zu wachen?
38 Wachet und betet, auf daß ihr nicht in Versuchung kommet; der Geist zwar ist willig, das Fleisch aber schwach.
39 Und er ging wiederum hin, betete und sprach dasselbe Wort.
40 Und als er zurückkam, fand er sie wiederum schlafend, denn ihre Augen waren beschwert; und sie wußten nicht, was sie ihm antworten sollten.
41 Und er kommt zum dritten Mal und spricht zu ihnen: So schlafet denn fort und ruhet aus. Es ist genug; die Stunde ist gekommen, siehe, der Sohn des Menschen wird in die Hände der Sünder überliefert.
42 Stehet auf, laßt uns gehen; siehe, der mich überliefert, ist nahe gekommen.
43 Und alsbald, während er noch redete, kommt Judas, einer der Zwölfe, herzu, und mit ihm eine große Volksmenge mit Schwertern und Stöcken, von den Hohenpriestern und den Schriftgelehrten und den Ältesten.
44 Der ihn aber überlieferte, hatte ihnen ein Zeichen gegeben und gesagt: Welchen irgend ich küssen werde, der ist's; ihn greifet und führet ihn sicher fort.
45 Und als er kam, trat er alsbald zu ihm und spricht: Rabbi, Rabbi! und küßte ihn sehr. {O. vielmals, oder zärtlich}
46 Sie aber legten ihre Hände an ihn und griffen ihn.
47 Einer aber von den Dabeistehenden zog das Schwert, schlug den Knecht des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm das Ohr ab.
48 Und Jesus hob an und sprach zu ihnen: Seid ihr ausgezogen wie gegen einen Räuber, mit Schwertern und Stöcken, mich zu fangen?
49 Täglich war ich bei euch, lehrend im Tempel {die Gebäude} , und ihr habt mich nicht gegriffen; - aber auf daß die Schriften erfüllt würden.
50 Und es verließen ihn alle und flohen.
51 Und ein gewisser Jüngling folgte ihm, der eine feine Leinwand um den bloßen Leib geworfen hatte; und [die Jünglinge] greifen ihn.
52 Er aber ließ die feine Leinwand fahren und floh nackt von ihnen.
53 Und sie führten Jesum hinweg zu dem Hohenpriester; und alle Hohenpriester und Ältesten und Schriftgelehrten versammeln sich zu ihm.
54 Und Petrus folgte ihm von ferne bis hinein in den Hof des Hohenpriesters; und er saß mit bei den Dienern und wärmte sich an dem Feuer.
55 Die Hohenpriester aber und das ganze Synedrium suchten Zeugnis wider Jesum, um ihn zum Tode zu bringen; und sie fanden keines.
56 Denn viele gaben falsches Zeugnis wider ihn, und die Zeugnisse waren nicht übereinstimmend.
57 Und etliche standen auf und gaben falsches Zeugnis wider ihn und sprachen:
58 Wir hörten ihn sagen: Ich werde diesen Tempel, {das Heiligtum} der mit Händen gemacht ist, abbrechen, und in drei Tagen werde ich einen anderen aufbauen, der nicht mit Händen gemacht ist.
59 Und auch also war ihr Zeugnis nicht übereinstimmend.
60 Und der Hohepriester stand auf, trat in die Mitte und fragte Jesum und sprach: Antwortest du nichts? Was zeugen diese wider dich?
61 Er aber schwieg und antwortete nichts. Wiederum fragte ihn der Hohepriester und spricht zu ihm: Bist du der Christus, der Sohn des Gesegneten?
62 Jesus aber sprach: Ich bin's! Und ihr werdet den Sohn des Menschen sitzen sehen zur Rechten der Macht und kommen mit den Wolken des Himmels.
63 Der Hohepriester aber zerriß seine Kleider und spricht: Was bedürfen wir noch Zeugen?
64 Ihr habt die Lästerung gehört; was dünkt euch? Sie aber verurteilten ihn, daß er des Todes schuldig sei.
65 Und etliche fingen an, ihn anzuspeien, und sein Angesicht zu verhüllen und ihn mit Fäusten zu schlagen und zu ihm zu sagen: Weissage! und die Diener gaben ihm Backenstreiche.
66 Und als Petrus unten im Hofe war, kommt eine von den Mägden des Hohenpriesters,
67 und als sie den Petrus sich wärmen sah, blickt sie ihn an und spricht: Auch du warst mit dem Nazarener Jesus.
68 Er aber leugnete und sprach: Ich weiß nicht, verstehe auch nicht, was du sagst . Und er ging hinaus in den Vorhof; und der Hahn krähte.
69 Und als die Magd ihn sah, fing sie wiederum an, zu den Dabeistehenden zu sagen: Dieser ist einer von ihnen.
70 Er aber leugnete wiederum. Und kurz nachher sagten wiederum die Dabeistehenden zu Petrus: Wahrhaftig, du bist einer von ihnen, denn du bist auch ein Galiläer.
71 Er aber fing an, sich zu verfluchen und zu schwören: Ich kenne diesen Menschen nicht, von welchem ihr redet.
72 Und zum zweiten Male krähte der Hahn. Und Petrus gedachte des Wortes, wie Jesus zu ihm, gesagt hatte: Ehe der Hahn zweimal kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen. Und als er daran dachte, weinte er.
