1 Now it came to the ears of Jacob that Laban's sons were saying, Jacob has taken away all our father's property, and in this way he has got all this wealth.
2 And Jacob saw that Laban's feeling for him was no longer what it had been before.
3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, Go back to the land of your fathers, and to your relations, and I will be with you.
4 And Jacob sent for Rachel and Leah to come to him in the field among his flock.
5 And he said to them, It is clear to me that your father's feeling is no longer what it was to me; but the God of my father has been with me
6 And you have seen how I have done all in my power for your father,
7 But your father has not kept faith with me, and ten times he has made changes in my payment; but God has kept him from doing me damage.
8 If he said, All those in the flock which have marks are to be yours, then all the flock gave birth to marked young; and if he said, All the banded ones are to be yours, then all the flock had banded young.
9 So God has taken away your father's cattle and has given them to me.
10 And at the time when the flock were with young, I saw in a dream that all the he-goats which were joined with the she-goats were banded and marked and coloured.
11 And in my dream the angel of the Lord said to me, Jacob: and I said, Here am I.
12 And he said, See how all the he-goats are banded and marked and coloured: for I have seen what Laban has done to you.
13 I am the God of Beth-el, where you put oil on the pillar and took an oath to me: now then, come out of this land and go back to the country of your birth.
14 Then Rachel and Leah said to him in answer, What part or heritage is there for us in our father's house?
15 Are we not as people from a strange country to him? for he took a price for us and now it is all used up.
16 For the wealth which God has taken from him is ours and our children's; so now, whatever God has said to you, do.
17 Then Jacob put his wives and his sons on camels;
18 And sending on before him all his cattle and his property which he had got together in Paddan-aram, he made ready to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.
19 Now Laban had gone to see to the cutting of the wool of his sheep; so Rachel secretly took the images of the gods of her father's house.
20 And Jacob went away secretly, without giving news of his flight to Laban the Aramaean.
21 So he went away with all he had, and went across the River in the direction of the hill-country of Gilead.
22 And on the third day Laban had news of Jacob's flight.
23 And taking the men of his family with him, he went after him for seven days and overtook him in the hill-country of Gilead.
24 Then God came to Laban in a dream by night, and said to him, Take care that you say nothing good or bad to Jacob.
25 Now when Laban overtook him, Jacob had put up his tent in the hill-country; and Laban and his brothers put up their tents in the hill-country of Gilead.
26 And Laban said to Jacob, Why did you go away secretly, taking my daughters away like prisoners of war?
27 Why did you make a secret of your flight, not giving me word of it, so that I might have sent you away with joy and songs, with melody and music?
28 You did not even let me give a kiss to my sons and my daughters. This was a foolish thing to do.
29 It is in my power to do you damage: but the God of your father came to me this night, saying, Take care that you say nothing good or bad to Jacob.
30 And now, it seems, you are going because your heart's desire is for your father's house; but why have you taken my gods?
31 And Jacob, in answer, said to Laban, My fear was that you might take your daughters from me by force.
32 As for your gods, if anyone of us has them, let him be put to death: make search before us all for what is yours, and take it. For Jacob had no knowledge that Rachel had taken them.
33 So Laban went into Jacob's tent and into Leah's tent, and into the tents of the two servant-women, but they were not there; and he came out of Leah's tent and went into Rachel's.
34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and had put them in the camels' basket, and was seated on them. And Laban, searching through all the tent, did not come across them.
35 And she said to her father, Let not my lord be angry because I do not get up before you, for I am in the common condition of women. And with all his searching, he did not come across the images.
36 Then Jacob was angry with Laban, and said, What crime or sin have I done that you have come after me with such passion?
37 Now that you have made search through all my goods, what have you seen which is yours? Make it clear now before my people and your people, so that they may be judges between us.
38 These twenty years I have been with you; your sheep and your goats have had young without loss, not one of your he-goats have I taken for food.
39 Anything which was wounded by beasts I did not take to you, but myself made up for the loss of it; you made me responsible for whatever was taken by thieves, by day or by night.
40 This was my condition, wasted by heat in the day and by the bitter cold at night; and sleep went from my eyes.
41 These twenty years I have been in your house; I was your servant for fourteen years because of your daughters, and for six years I kept your flock, and ten times was my payment changed.
42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, you would have sent me away with nothing in my hands. But God has seen my troubles and the work of my hands, and this night he kept you back.
43 Then Laban, answering, said, These women are my daughters and these children my children, the flocks and all you see are mine: what now may I do for my daughters and for their children?
44 Come, let us make an agreement, you and I; and let it be for a witness between us.
45 Then Jacob took a stone and put it up as a pillar.
46 And Jacob said to his people, Get stones together; and they did so; and they had a meal there by the stones.
47 And the name Laban gave it was Jegar-sahadutha: but Jacob gave it the name of Galeed.
48 And Laban said, These stones are a witness between you and me today. For this reason its name was Galeed,
49 And Mizpah, for he said, May the Lord keep watch on us when we are unable to see one another's doings.
50 If you are cruel to my daughters, or if you take other wives in addition to my daughters, then though no man is there to see, God will be the witness between us.
51 And Laban said, See these stones and this pillar which I have put between you and me;
52 They will be witness that I will not go over these stones to you, and you will not go over these stones or this pillar to me, for any evil purpose.
53 May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, be our judge. Then Jacob took an oath by the Fear of his father Isaac.
54 And Jacob made an offering on the mountain, and gave orders to his people to take food: so they had a meal and took their rest that night on the mountain.
55 And early in the morning Laban, after kissing and blessing his daughters, went on his way back to his country.
1 Mas Jacob começou a ouvir o que os filhos de Labão diziam: que tudo o que tinha o tirara ao pai, e que à custa deste é que enriquecera. E Jacob via bem o esfriamento da atitude de Labão em relação a si próprio.
3 Então o Senhor falou a Jacob: Volta para a terra dos teus pais e da tua família. Eu hei-de estar sempre contigo.
4 Por isso um dia Jacob mandou chamar Raquel e Leia ao campo, lá onde estava a guardar os rebanhos, para lhes falar destas coisas:
5 O vosso pai mudou muito para comigo. Mas o Deus do meu pai falou-me.
6 Vocês sabem como tenho trabalhado duramente para o vosso pai. Contudo ele enganou-me, alterou várias vezes o contrato de salário que fiz com ele. Deus, no entanto, não permitiu que eu fosse prejudicado, porque quando dizia que todos os animais malhados seriam meus, então todo o rebanho dava malhados. Mas depois, quando alterava e dizia que seriam antes os de listas os meus, o rebanho dava só listados! Foi dessa forma que o Senhor me fez enriquecer à custa do rebanho do vosso pai. Então na altura do rebanho conceber, tive um sonho em que os bodes que fecundavam as ovelhas eram listados, sarapintados ou às manchas.
11 E a certa altura desse sonho o anjo de Deus chamou-me e disse-me que devia juntar as cabras brancas aos bodes listados, sarapintados e manchados; e acrescentou: 'Tenho visto o que Labão te fez. Eu sou o Deus que te encontrou em Betel, naquele lugar em que me consagraste uma pedra levantada como monumento e em que fizeste voto de me servir. Portanto deixa agora esta terra e volta para onde está a tua família'.
14 Raquel e Leia responderam-lhe: Estamos inteiramente de acordo. Aliás não há aqui nada para nós. Nenhuma parte dos bens do nosso pai nos caberia em herança, fosse de que maneira fosse. Pelo contrário, reduziu os nossos direitos aos de meras mulheres estranhas à casa. Vendeu-nos, e até o dote a que tínhamos direito ficou com ele! Portanto toda a fortuna que Deus tirou ao nosso pai agora é nossa e dos nossos filhos; por isso vai, faz tudo o que Deus te disse.
17 Assim, um certo dia, enquanto Labão tinha ido tosquiar o rebanho, Jacob pôs as mulheres e os filhos em camelos e fugiu sem dizer nada ao sogro. Levou consigo os rebanhos todos que tinha obtido em Padan-Arã, assim como tudo o resto que adquirira ali, e partiu para regressar junto do seu pai Isaque, na terra de Canaã.
21 Fugiu portanto com tudo o que possuia, e Raquel chegou mesmo a roubar da casa do pai os deuses, os ídolos, para os levar consigo. Atravessou o rio Eufrates, tomando a seguir a direcão do território de Gileade.
22 Labão só soube dessa fuga três dias depois. Tomou consigo vários homens da sua casa e foi-se em perseguição deles, só os apanhando sete dias mais tarde, no monte Gileade. Nessa noite Deus apareceu-lhe num sonho: Vê bem o que vais dizer a Jacob! Não o amaldiçoes, nem tão pouco cuides em abençoá-lo.
25 Labão conseguiu finalmente apanhá-los quando acampavam no topo da montanha. Ele e os seus homens fizeram o mesmo, nas proximidades.
26 Que significa isto, que te esquivaste assim de mim?, perguntou-lhe Labão. Levas-me as minhas filhas como se tivessem sido feitas prisioneiras numa batalha! Porque é que nem sequer me deste a possibilidade de fazer uma festa de despedida em que houvesse alegria, se cantasse e se tocasse? Nem sequer me deixaste beijar os meus netos e netas. Foi muito estranho e muito insensato o que fizeste. Tinha agora possibilidade de te fazer mal, de me vingar, mas o Deus do teu pai falou-me ontem à noite, dizendo-me que visse bem que não te amaldiçoasse nem sequer te abençoasse.
30 Mas queria contudo perguntar-te uma coisa: Embora quisesses muito ir-te embora porque tinha saudades dos teus e da tua casa, por que razão havias tu de me roubar os meus ídolos?
31 Jacob então retorquiu-lhe: Se me esquivei foi porque tinha medo, e pensei para comigo que talvez quisesses tirar-me pela força as tuas filhas. Mas olha que quanto aos deuses da tua casa, pois que morra aquele que os tiver tirado! Seja o que for que achares aqui no meio de nós, e que seja teu, podes levá-lo sem mais problemas.Jacob não sabia que Raquel os tinha furtado.
33 Labão foi então primeiramente à tenda de Jacob e procurou lá. Depois foi à de Leia e à de ambas as criadas e não achou nada. Por fim entrou na de Raquel. Mas Raquel tinha-os escondido sob a albarda dum camelo e por isso foi-se sentar nele. Labão procurou por toda a parte na tenda e também não viu nada.
35 Pai, desculpa-me se eu não me levanto, disse, mas é que estou à espera dum bebé!
36 Então Jacob ficou mesmo irritado contra Labão e perguntou-lhe: Bom, e então? O que é que encontraste? Qual foi afinal o meu crime? Vieste em minha perseguição como se fosse um criminoso, fizeste-me uma busca completa. Agora, põe aqui diante de nós tudo o que eu tenho roubado, para que a tua gente e nós próprios o vejamos e se possa decidir quem é o culpado.
38 Afinal, sabes bem, estive vinte anos contigo, cuidando dos teus animais que sempre deram crias saudáveis, e nunca comi sequer um carneiro do teu rebanho. Se acontecia que algum animal do rebanho era atacado por uma fera não to vinha trazer pedindo-te simplesmente para tomares nota de que havia um a menos. Antes pelo contrário, pagava-to. Aliás, qualquer animal que tivesse sido roubado, fosse quando fosse, de dia ou de noite, querias que eu to pagasse, tivesse eu ou não a responsabilidade do rebanho na altura do roubo!
40 Trabalhei para ti tanto sob o calor ardente do dia, como durante o frio das noites geladas que até nem podia dormir. Sim, foram vinte anos: quatorze para ganhar as tuas duas filhas e mais seis para conseguir os rebanhos que tenho; e dez vezes me reduziste o salário! Se não fosse a misericórdia de Deus, o Deus de Abraão meu avô, o grande Deus de Isaque meu pai, ter-me-ias mandado embora sem um centavo.
42 Mas Deus deu atenção à situação em que me encontrava, tomou em consideração o meu duro trabalho e viu a tua crueldade, por isso te apareceu ontem à noite!
43 Labão respondeu-lhe por sua vez: Estas mulheres são minhas filhas, estes moços são também filhos meus; e até esses rebanhos e tudo o que tens é, afinal, meu. Por isso como poderia eu prejudicar as minhas próprias filhas e os meus netos? Vamos fazer um tratado de paz, tu e eu, e dele ficarão dependentes as nossas relações.
45 Jacob pegou numa pedra e ergueu-a em sinal de monumento come-morando esse pacto. Depois disse aos seus homens que juntassem várias pedras de forma a formarem uma mesa grande sobre a qual todos comessem. E assim aconteceu. Chamaram-lhe a Pilha do Testemunho, ou seja, na linguagem de Labão Jeger-Saaduta, e na de Jacob Galeede .
48 E Labão disse: Que esta pilha de pedras sirva como testemunho da aliança que fizemos nós dois. Mas também ficou conhecida pela Coluna da Vigilância, ou Mizpá, porque Labão também declarou: Que seja o Senhor mesmo a vigiar se cumprimos este tratado, quando estivermos longe um do outro. Que seja ele próprio a verificar se vieres a tratar mal as minhas filhas, ou a tomar outras mulheres além delas. Eu poderei não saber nada, mas Deus há-de vê-lo.
51 Esta pilha de pedras, continuou Labão, e esta outra levantada em padrão lembrará a toda a gente a promessa que fizemos de que nem eu passarei esta linha para ir atacar-te, nem tu a atravessarás para me combater. Que seja o próprio Deus de Abraão, e de Naor e do seu pai, a julgar qualquer tentativa de quebra deste pacto por parte de um de nós os dois.Jacob jurou, perante o poderoso Deus do seu pai Isaque, que havia de respeitar esse tratado. E apresentou a Deus um sacrifício ali mesmo no cimo daquela montanha, convidando os seus companheiros para uma festa; assim comeram e passaram juntos a noite naquele monte.
55 Na manhã seguinte, ainda de madrugada, Labão beijou as filhas e os netos, abençoou-os e partiu, regressando a casa.
