Isaiah 25

Salvation and Judgment on That Day

1 Lord, you are my God;  * 25:1 Ex 15:2; Ps 118:28; Is 7:13; 44:17

I will exalt you. I will praise your name,

for you have accomplished wonders,

plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.

2 For you have turned the city into a pile of rocks,  * 25:2 Is 17:1; 26:5

a fortified city, into ruins;

the fortress of barbarians  * 25:2 Col 3:11 is no longer a city;

it will never be rebuilt.

3 Therefore, a strong people will honor you.

The cities of violent nations will fear you.

4 For you have been a stronghold for the poor person,

a stronghold for the needy  * 25:4 Mt 11:29 in his distress,

a refuge from storms and a shade from heat.  * 25:4 Is 4:6; 32:2

When the breath of the violent

is like a storm against a wall,

5 like heat in a dry land,

you will subdue the uproar of barbarians.

As the shade of a cloud cools the heat of the day,

so he will silence the song of the violent.

6 On this mountain,  * 25:6 = Mount Zion,* 25:6 Is 2:2–4

the Lord of Armies will prepare for all the peoples a feast of choice meat,  * 25:6 Is 24:23; Rv 19:9

a feast with aged wine, prime cuts of choice meat,  * 25:6 Lit wine, fat full of marrow fine vintage wine.

7 On this mountain

he will swallow up the burial shroud,

the shroud over all the peoples,

the sheet covering all the nations.  * 25:7 2Co 3:15–16; Eph 4:18

8 When he has swallowed up death once and for all,  * 25:8 Hs 13:14; 1Co 15:54; Rv 21:4

the Lord God will wipe away the tears

from every face  * 25:8 Is 30:19; 35:10; 51:11; 65:19; Rv 7:17; 21:4

and remove his people’s disgrace  * 25:8 Ps 89:50–51; Is 51:7; 54:4; Mt 5:11; 1Pt 4:14

from the whole earth,

for the Lord has spoken.

9 On that day it will be said,

"Look, this is our God;

we have waited for him, and he has saved us.

This is the Lord; we have waited for him.

Let’s rejoice and be glad in his salvation."  * 25:9 Is 35:1–2,10; 66:10

10 For the Lord’s power will rest on this mountain.

But Moab  * 25:10 Nm 24:17; Is 15:1 will be trampled in his place  * 25:10 Or trampled under him

as straw is trampled in a dung pile.

11 He will spread out his arms in the middle of it,

as a swimmer spreads out his arms to swim.

His pride will be brought low,

along with the trickery of his hands.  * 25:11 Is 2:10–12,15–17; 16:6,14

12 The high-walled fortress will be brought down,

thrown to the ground, to the dust.  * 25:10–12 Is 26:5–6
