CSB Christian Standard Bible

The Obedient Servant

4 The Lord God has given me

the tongue of those who are instructed  50:4 Is 8:16; 54:13

to know how to sustain the weary with a word.

He awakens me each morning;

he awakens my ear to listen like those being instructed.  50:4 Jn 4:34

5 The Lord God has opened my ear,

and I was not rebellious;

I did not turn back.  50:5 Jn 8:29; 14:31; 15:10; Php 2:8; Heb 5:8

6 I gave my back to those who beat me,

and my cheeks to those who tore out my beard.

I did not hide my face from scorn and spitting.  50:6 Mt 26:67; 27:26; Mk 14:65; 15:19; Lk 22:63; Jn 19:1–5

7 The Lord God will help me;

therefore I have not been humiliated;

therefore I have set my face like flint,  50:7 Ezk 3:8–9

and I know I will not be put to shame.

8 The one who vindicates me is near;  50:8 Is 45:25

who will contend with me?

Let us confront each other.  50:8 Lit us stand

Who has a case against me?  50:8 Lit Who is lord of my judgment

Let him come near me!

9 In truth, the Lord God will help me;

who will condemn me?  50:9 Rm 8:33–34

Indeed, all of them will wear out like a garment;

a moth will devour them.  50:9 Jb 13:28; Is 51:8; Hs 5:12

  1. KJV King James Version

    4 The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

    5 The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back. 6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

    7 For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. 8 He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me.50.8 mine…: Heb. the master of my cause? 9 Behold, the Lord GOD will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.

  2. NIV New International Version

    4 The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue,

    to know the word that sustains the weary.

    He wakens me morning by morning,

    wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.

    5 The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears;

    I have not been rebellious,

    I have not turned away.

    6 I offered my back to those who beat me,

    my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;

    I did not hide my face

    from mocking and spitting.

    7 Because the Sovereign Lord helps me,

    I will not be disgraced.

    Therefore have I set my face like flint,

    and I know I will not be put to shame.

    8 He who vindicates me is near.

    Who then will bring charges against me?

    Let us face each other!

    Who is my accuser?

    Let him confront me!

    9 It is the Sovereign Lord who helps me.

    Who will condemn me?

    They will all wear out like a garment;

    the moths will eat them up.

  4. NLT New Living Translation

    4 The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom,

    so that I know how to comfort the weary.

    Morning by morning he wakens me

    and opens my understanding to his will.

    5 The Sovereign Lord has spoken to me,

    and I have listened.

    I have not rebelled or turned away.

    6 I offered my back to those who beat me

    and my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard.

    I did not hide my face

    from mockery and spitting.

    7 Because the Sovereign Lord helps me,

    I will not be disgraced.

    Therefore, I have set my face like a stone,

    determined to do his will.

    And I know that I will not be put to shame.

    8 He who gives me justice is near.

    Who will dare to bring charges against me now?

    Where are my accusers?

    Let them appear!

    9 See, the Sovereign Lord is on my side!

    Who will declare me guilty?

    All my enemies will be destroyed

    like old clothes that have been eaten by moths!

  7. DRA Douay-Rheims American 1899

    4 The Lord hath given me a learned tongue, that I should know how to uphold by word him that is weary: he wakeneth in the morning, in the morning he wakeneth my ear, that I may hear him as a master. 5 The Lord God hath opened my ear, and I do not resist: I have not gone back. 6 I have given my body to the strikers, and my cheeks to them that plucked them: I have not turned away my face from them that rebuked me, and spit upon me. 7 The Lord God is my helper, therefore am I not confounded: therefore have I set my face as a most hard rock, and I know that I shall not be confounded. 8 He is near that justifieth me, who will contend with me? let us stand together, who is my adversary? let him come near to me. 9 Behold the Lord God is my helper: who is he that shall condemn me? Lo, they shall all be destroyed as a garment, the moth shall eat them up.

  8. MSG The Message

    4-9 The Master, God, has given me

    a well-taught tongue,

    So I know how to encourage tired people.

    He wakes me up in the morning,

    Wakes me up, opens my ears

    to listen as one ready to take orders.

    The Master, God, opened my ears,

    and I didn’t go back to sleep,

    didn’t pull the covers back over my head.

    I followed orders,

    stood there and took it while they beat me,

    held steady while they pulled out my beard,

    Didn’t dodge their insults,

    faced them as they spit in my face.

    And the Master, God, stays right there and helps me,

    so I’m not disgraced.

    Therefore I set my face like flint,

    confident that I’ll never regret this.

    My champion is right here.

    Let’s take our stand together!

    Who dares bring suit against me?

    Let him try!

    Look! the Master, God, is right here.

    Who would dare call me guilty?

    Look! My accusers are a clothes bin of threadbare

    socks and shirts, fodder for moths!
