Restoration from Captivity

1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord. 2 "This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Write on a scroll all the words that I have spoken to you 30:2 Ex 17:14; 34:1,27; Nm 5:23; Dt 17:18; 27:3; 31:19; Is 30:8; Jr 36:2,28; Ezk 43:11; Hs 8:12; Hab 2:2; 1Co 14:37; Rv 1:11; 10:4; 14:13; 19:9; 21:53 for look, the days are coming— this is the Lords declaration — "when I will restore the fortunes  30:3 Or will end the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, 30:3 Jr 33:7,11; Ezk 37:15–23; 39:25; Jl 3:1; Am 9:14 says the Lord. "I will restore them to the land I gave to their ancestors and they will possess it."

4 These are the words the Lord spoke to Israel and Judah. 5 This is what the Lord says:

We have heard cry of terror,

of dread — there is no peace.

6 Ask and see

whether a male can give birth.

Why then do see every man

with his hands on his stomach like woman in labor

and every face turned pale 30:6 Ps 48:6; Is 13:8; 21:3; 42:14; Jr 4:31; 6:24; 13:21; 22:23; 50:43; Mc 4:9–10; 1Th 5:3

7 How awful that day will be 30:7 Jl 2:11; Zph 1:14

There will be no other like it 30:7 Dn 12:1

It will be time of trouble for Jacob,

but he will be saved out of it.

8 On that day

this is the declaration of the  Lord of Armies

I will break his yoke from your neck  30:8 Gn 27:40; Jr 2:20; 28:4,11; Ezk 34:27; Nah 1:13

and tear off your chains 30:8 Jr 27:2

and strangers will never again enslave him 30:8 Ezk 34:27

9 They will serve the Lord their God

and David their king,

whom I will raise up for them 30:9 Is 55:3–5; Ezk 34:23–24; 37:24–25; Hs 3:5; Lk 1:69; Ac 13:23,34

10 As for you, my servant Jacob 30:10 Is 41:8; 44:2; 45:4; 48:20; Jr 46:27; Ezk 28:25; 37:25

do not be afraid

this is the  Lorddeclaration

and do not be discouragedIsrael,

for without fail will save you out of a distant place,

your descendants, from the land of their captivity!

Jacob will return and have calm and quiet

with no one to frighten him 30:10 Lv 26:6; Jr 46:27; Ezk 34:28; 39:26; Mc 4:4; Zph 3:13

11 For I will be with you

this is the  Lorddeclaration

to save you 30:11 2Kg 19:34; Is 37:35; Jr 15:20

I will bring destruction on all the nations

where I have scattered you;

however, I will not bring destruction on you.

I will discipline you justly,

and I will by no means leave you unpunished 30:10–11 Ex 34:7; Jr 46:27–28

Healing Zion’s Wounds

12 For this is what the Lord says:

Your injury is incurable;

your wound most severe 30:12 Jr 10:19; 15:18; 17:9

13 You have no defender for your case 30:13 Hs 5:13

There is no remedy for your sores,

and no healing for you 30:13 Or No one pleads that your sores should be healed. There is no remedy for you.

14 All your lovers have forgotten you 30:14 Jr 4:30; Lm 1:19

they no longer look for you,

for I have struck you as an enemy would,

with the discipline  30:14 Jr 2:30; 5:3; 7:28 of someone cruel 30:14 Is 13:9

because of your enormous guilt

and your innumerable sins.

15 Why do you cry out about your injury?

Your pain has no cure!

I have done these things to you

because of your enormous guilt

and your innumerable sins 30:15 Jr 5:6; Am 5:12

16 Nevertheless, all who devoured you will be devoured 30:16 Jr 10:25

and all your adversaries — all of them

will go off into exile.

Those who plunder you will be plundered,

and all who raid you will be raided 30:16 Ezk 39:10; Hab 2:8

17 But I will bring you health  30:17 Is 58:8; Jr 8:22; 33:6

and will heal you of your wounds

this is the  Lorddeclaration

for they call you Outcast,

Zion whom no one cares about.

Restoration of the Land

18 This is what the Lord says:

I will certainly restore the fortunes  30:18 Or certainly end the captivity of Jacob’s tents  30:18 Jr 30:3

and show compassion  30:18 Jr 12:15; 31:20; 33:26; 42:12 on his dwellings.

Every city will be rebuilt on its mound;

every citadel will stand on its proper site.

19 Thanksgiving will come out of them,

a sound of rejoicing.

I will multiply them, and they will not decrease 30:19 Jr 29:6

I will honor them, and they will not be insignificant.

20 His children will be as in past days;

his congregation will be established in my presence.

I will punish all his oppressors 30:20 Jdg 10:12; Is 19:20–25

21 Jacob’s leader will be one of them;

his ruler will issue from him.

I will invite him to me, and he will approach me 30:21 Nm 16:5

for who would otherwise risk his life to approach me?

This is the  Lorddeclaration.

22 You will be my people,

and I will be your God 30:22 Jr 11:4; 24:7; 31:33

The Wrath of God

23 Look, a storm from the  Lord 30:23 Ps 83:15; Is 29:6; Zch 9:14

Wrath has gone out,

a churning storm.

It will whirl about the heads of the wicked.

24 The Lords burning anger will not turn back

until he has completely fulfilled the purposes of his heart.

In time to come you will understand it 30:23–24 Jr 23:19–20
