Prophecies against the Nations

1 This is the word of the Lord that came to the prophet Jeremiah about the nations 46:1 Jr 25:15–38

Prophecies against Egypt

2 About Egypt and the army of Pharaoh Neco, Egypt’s king 46:2 2Kg 23:29 which was defeated at Carchemish  46:2 2Ch 35:20 on the Euphrates River by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon in the fourth year of Judah’s King Jehoiakim son of Josiah 46:2 Jr 45:1

3 Deploy small shields  46:3 Jr 49:14; Ob 1 and large;

approach for battle!

4 Harness the horses;

mount the steeds 46:4 Or mount up, riders

take your positions with helmets on!

Polish the lances;

put on armor 46:4 Jb 41:13; Jr 51:3

5 Why have I seen this?

They are terrified,

they are retreating,

their warriors are crushed,

they flee headlong,

they never look back,

terror is on every side 46:5 Jr 6:25; 20:3–4,10; 49:29

This is the  Lorddeclaration.

6 The swift cannot flee,

and the warrior cannot escape 46:6 Am 2:14

In the north by the bank of the Euphrates River,

they stumble and fall 46:6 Dn 11:19

7 Who is this, rising like the Nile 46:7 Jr 47:2

with waters that churn like rivers?

8 Egypt rises like the Nile 46:8 Am 8:8

and its waters churn like rivers.

He boasts, "will go up, will cover the earth;

I will destroy cities with their residents."

9 Rise up, you cavalry!

Race furiously, you chariots!

Let the warriors march out

Cush and Put 46:9 Gn 10:6; Ezk 30:5

who are able to handle shields,

and the men of Lud 46:9 Gn 10:13; 1Ch 1:11

who are able to handle and string the bow 46:9 Is 66:19

10 That day belongs to the Lord, the  God of Armies,

a day of vengeance to avenge himself

against his adversaries.

The sword will devour and be satisfied;

it will drink its fill of their blood,

because it will be sacrifice  46:10 Is 34:5–8; Ezk 39:17–20; Zph 1:7 to the Lord, the  God of Armies,

in the northern land by the Euphrates River 46:10 Zph 1:7

11 Go up to Gilead and get balm 46:11 Gn 37:25; Jr 8:22; 51:8

Virgin Daughter Egypt!

You have multiplied remedies in vain;

there is no healing for you.

12 The nations have heard of your dishonor 46:12 Jr 13:26; Hs 4:7; Nah 3:5

and your cries fill the earth,

because warrior stumbles against warrior

and together both of them have fallen.

13 This is the word the Lord spoke to the prophet Jeremiah about the coming of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon to defeat the land of Egypt 46:13 Jr 43:8–13

14 Announce it in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol 46:14 Jr 2:16; 43:7–9; 44:1

Proclaim it in Memphis and in Tahpanhes!

Say, "Take positions! Prepare yourself,

for the sword devours all around you. 46:14 Jr 46:10

15 Why have your strong ones been swept away?

Each has not stood,

for the Lord has thrust him down.

16 He continues to stumble 46:16 Lv 26:36–37

Indeed, each falls over the other.

They say, "Get up! Let’s return to our people

and to our native land,

away from the oppressor’s sword. 46:16 Jr 50:16

17 There they will cry out,

"Pharaoh king of Egypt was all noise;

he let the opportune moment pass."

18 As I live

this is the King’s declaration;

the Lord of Armies is his name  46:18 Jr 48:15; 51:57

the king of Babylon  46:18 Lit He will come like Tabor among the mountains

and like Carmel by the sea.

19 Get your bags ready for exile,

inhabitant of Daughter Egypt 46:19 Jr 48:18

For Memphis will become desolation,

uninhabited ruins.

20 Egypt is beautiful young cow 46:20 Hs 10:11

but a horsefly from the north is coming against her 46:20 Some Hb mss, LXX, Syr; other Hb mss read is coming, coming, 46:20 Jr 1:13–14

21 Even her mercenaries among her

are like stall-fed calves.

They too will turn back;

together they will flee;

they will not take their stand,

for the day of their calamity is coming on them,

the time of their punishment 46:21 Jr 50:27,31

22 Egypt will hiss like slithering snake 46:22 Lit Her sound is like a snake as it goes

for the enemy will come with an army;

with axes they will come against her

like those who cut trees 46:22 Ps 74:5

23 They will cut down her forest

this is the  Lorddeclaration

though it is dense,

for they are more numerous than locusts;

they cannot be counted 46:23 Jdg 6:5; 7:12

24 Daughter Egypt will be put to shame,

handed over to northern people 46:24 Jr 1:15

25 The Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says, "I am about to punish Amon, god of Thebes 46:25 Ezk 30:14–16 along with Pharaoh, Egypt, her gods, and her kings — Pharaoh and those trusting in him. 26 I will hand them over to those who intend to take their lives  46:26 Jr 44:30; Ezk 32:11  — to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and his officers. But after this 46:26 Ezk 29:8–14 Egypt  46:26 Lit it will be inhabited again as in ancient times."

This is the Lords declaration.

Reassurance for Israel

27 But you, my servant Jacob, do not be afraid 46:27 Is 41:8; 44:2; 45:4

and do not be discouragedIsrael,

and your descendants from the land of their captivity!

Jacob will return and have calm and quiet

with no one to frighten him.

28 And you, my servant Jacob, do not be afraid

this is the  Lorddeclaration

for I will be with you 46:28 Jr 1:8,19; 30:11; 42:11

I will bring destruction on all the nations

where I have banished you,

but I will not bring destruction on you.

I will discipline you with justice,

and I will by no means leave you unpunished 46:27–28 Jr 30:10–11
