Jeremiah 47

Prophecies against the Philistines

1 This is the word of the Lord that came to the prophet Jeremiah about the Philistines  * 47:1 Jr 25:20 before Pharaoh defeated Gaza.  * 47:1 Am 1:6–7; Zph 2:42 This is what the Lord says:

Look, water is rising from the north  * 47:2 Jr 1:13; 4:6,20; 6:1; 50:3,9,41; 51:48

and becoming an overflowing wadi.

It will overflow the land and everything in it,  * 47:2 Is 8:7–8

the cities and their inhabitants.

The people will cry out,

and every inhabitant of the land will wail.

3 At the sound of the stomping hooves of his stallions,  * 47:3 Jdg 5:22; Jr 8:16; 50:11

the rumbling of his chariots,

and the clatter of their wheels,  * 47:3 Nah 3:2–3

fathers will not turn back for their sons.

They will be utterly helpless  * 47:3 Lit Because of weakened hands

4 on account of the day that is coming

to destroy all the Philistines,

to cut off from Tyre and Sidon

every remaining ally.  * 47:4 Jr 25:22; Jl 3:4; Am 1:8–10

Indeed, the Lord is about to destroy the Philistines,

the remnant of the coastland of Caphtor.  * 47:4 Probably Crete,* 47:4 Gn 10:14; Am 9:7

5 Baldness  * 47:5 Jr 48:37 is coming to Gaza;

Ashkelon will become silent.  * 47:5 Jdg 1:18; Jr 25:20

Remnant of their valley,

how long will you gash yourself?

6 Oh, sword of the  Lord!  * 47:6 Ezk 21:3–5

How long will you be restless?

Go back to your sheath;

be still; be silent!

7 How can it  * 47:7 LXX, Vg; MT reads you rest

when the Lord has given it a command?  * 47:7 Ezk 14:17

He has assigned it  * 47:7 Mc 6:9

against Ashkelon and the shore of the sea.
