Hebreus 1

1 God having spoken in many parts and in many ways formerly to the fathers in the prophets, 2 at the end of these days has spoken to us in the person of the Son, whom he has established heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 who being the effulgence of his glory and the expression of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, having made by himself the purification of sins, set himself down on the right hand of the greatness on high,

4 taking a place by so much better than the angels, as he inherits a name more excellent than they. 5 For to which of the angels said he ever, Thou art my Son: this day have I begotten thee? and again, I will be to him for father, and he shall be to me for son? 6 and again, when he brings in the firstborn into the habitable world, he says, And let all God’s angels worship him. 7 And as to the angels he says, Who makes his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire; 8 but as to the Son, Thy throne, O God, is to the age of the age, and a sceptre of uprightness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. 9 Thou hast loved righteousness and hast hated lawlessness; therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with oil of gladness above thy companions. 10 And, Thou in the beginning, Lord, hast founded the earth, and works of thy hands are the heavens. 11 They shall perish, but thou continuest still; and they all shall grow old as a garment, 12 and as a covering shalt thou roll them up, and they shall be changed; but thou art the Same, and thy years shall not fail. 13 But as to which of the angels said he ever, Sit at my right hand until I put thine enemies as footstool of thy feet? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out for service on account of those who shall inherit salvation?

1 In het verleden heeft God op allerlei verschillende manieren tot onze voorouders gesproken via de profeten. 2 Maar nu, aan het einde van de tijd, spreekt Hij tot ons door de Zoon, die door Hem is aangesteld tot uiteindelijke eigenaar van alles wat bestaat. Ook heeft Hij door Hem het heelal gemaakt. 3 De Zoon is de afstraling van Gods luister en de afspiegeling van zijn wezen. Hij onderhoudt alles wat bestaat met zijn krachtig bevel en nadat Hij het mogelijk heeft gemaakt om van onze zonden te worden gereinigd, heeft Hij plaatsgenomen aan de rechterzijde van de allerhoogste Majesteit.

4 De Zoon heeft een hogere positie verkregen dan de engelen, en een naam die de hunne overstijgt. 5 Immers, tegen wie van de engelen heeft God ooit gezegd: "Jij bent mijn Zoon, vandaag heb Ik Je verwekt", of ook: "Ik zal zijn Vader zijn en Hij zal mijn Zoon zijn"? 6 Bovendien zei God, toen Hij de Eerstgeboren Zoon naar de wereld stuurde: "Hem moeten al Gods engelen aanbidden." 7 Over de engelen zegt God: "Hij maakt dat zijn engelen zijn als de wind en zijn dienaren als vuurvlammen", 8 maar over de Zoon zegt Hij: "Uw troon, o God, houdt stand voor eeuwig en altijd" en: "U heerst in alle rechtvaardigheid over uw koninkrijk. 9 U houdt van gerechtigheid en haat wetteloosheid. Daarom, o God, heeft uw God U boven uw metgezellen gesteld en U met vreugde gezalfd als met olie." 10 Ook zegt God: "In het begin legde U, Heer, de fundering van de aarde; ook de hemelen zijn door U gemaakt. 11 Zij zullen vergaan, maar U blijft bestaan. Als een kledingstuk zullen ze verslijten. 12 Als een mantel zal U hen oprollen, als een kledingstuk zullen ze worden verwisseld; maar U blijft altijd dezelfde en er komt geen einde aan uw bestaan." 13 Tegen wie van de engelen heeft God ooit gezegd: "Neem plaats aan mijn rechterzijde, totdat Ik je vijanden aan je heb onderworpen."? 14 Integendeel, alle engelen zijn geesten in dienst van God; ze worden uitgezonden ten behoeve van de mensen die de redding zullen ontvangen.
