Hebreus 3

1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Jesus, 2 who is faithful to him that has constituted him, as Moses also in all his house. 3 For he has been counted worthy of greater glory than Moses, by how much he that has built it has more honour than the house. 4 For every house is built by some one; but he who has built all things is God. 5 And Moses indeed was faithful in all his house, as a ministering servant, for a testimony of the things to be spoken after; 6 but Christ, as Son over his house, whose house are we, if indeed we hold fast the boldness and the boast of hope firm to the end.

7 Wherefore, even as says the Holy Spirit, To-day if ye will hear his voice, 8 harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness; 9 where your fathers tempted me, by proving me, and saw my works forty years. 10 Wherefore I was wroth with this generation, and said, They always err in heart; and they have not known my ways; 11 so I swore in my wrath, If they shall enter into my rest. 12 See, brethren, lest there be in any one of you a wicked heart of unbelief, in turning away from the living God. 13 But encourage yourselves each day, as long as it is called To-day, that none of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we are become companions of the Christ if indeed we hold the beginning of the assurance firm to the end; 15 in that it is said, To-day if ye will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, as in the provocation; 16 (for who was it, who, having heard, provoked? but was it not all who came out of Egypt by Moses? 17 And with whom was he wroth forty years? Was it not with those who had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to those who had not hearkened to the word? 19 And we see that they could not enter in on account of unbelief;)

1 Daarom, aan God toegewijde broeders en zusters, deelgenoten aan de hemelse roeping, bedenk dat Jezus, de apostel en hogepriester van het geloof dat wij belijden, 2 trouw was aan Degene die Hem had aangesteld, zoals ook Mozes trouw dienst heeft gedaan in heel Gods huis. 3 Maar zoals de bouwer van een huis meer eer krijgt dan het huis zelf, zo verdient Jezus meer eer dan Mozes. 4 Ieder huis wordt door iemand gebouwd, maar de bouwer van alles is God. 5 Door trouw zijn taak als dienaar in heel Gods huis te vervullen, getuigde Mozes van hetgeen later verkondigd zou worden. 6 Christus daarentegen is trouw als de Zoon die over het huis is aangesteld. En dat huis zijn wij, als wij tenminste blijmoedig vasthouden aan de verwachting waarop we zo fier zijn.

7 Daarom, zoals de Heilige Geest zegt: "Als jullie vandaag zijn stem horen, 8 wees dan niet eigenzinnig, zoals bij de opstand in de woestijn, toen jullie Mij uitdaagden. 9 Hoewel jullie voorouders mijn daden hadden gezien, daagden ze Mij uit en tergden ze Mij, 10 veertig jaar lang. Daarom werd Ik kwaad op die mensen. Ik zei: ‘Hun hart dwaalt voortdurend af, in plaats van de weg te volgen die Ik wijs.’ 11 Ik was zo kwaad dat Ik zwoer dat ze de rust die Ik aanbied nooit zouden ervaren." 12 Zorg er dus voor, broeders en zusters, dat niemand van jullie zich met een zondig, ongelovig hart afkeert van de God die het leven geeft. 13 Moedig elkaar iedere dag aan, zolang we het nog over "vandaag" kunnen hebben, opdat niemand van jullie zich door zonde laat misleiden en eigenzinnig wordt. 14 Wij mogen delen in alles wat van Christus is, als we tenminste tot het einde stevig vasthouden aan onze aanvankelijke overtuiging. 15 Zoals er is gezegd: "Als jullie vandaag zijn stem horen, wees dan niet eigenzinnig." 16 Wie waren het die in opstand kwamen hoewel ze Gods stem hadden gehoord? Waren dat niet allen die onder leiding van Mozes uit Egypte waren vertrokken? 17 En op wie was God veertig jaar lang kwaad? Waren dat niet zij die hadden gezondigd en van wie de lijken in de woestijn zijn achtergebleven? 18 En aan wie verklaarde God dat ze de rust die Hij aanbiedt niet zouden ervaren? Waren dat niet zij die ongehoorzaam waren? 19 We zien dus dat ze die rust niet konden ervaren wegens hun ongeloof.
