1 Paul, apostle of Jesus Christ by God's will, according to promise of life, the {life} which {is} in Christ Jesus,

2 to Timotheus, {my} beloved child: grace, mercy, peace, from God {the} Father, and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 I am thankful to God, whom I serve from {my} forefathers with pure conscience, how unceasingly I have the remembrance of thee in my supplications night and day,

4 earnestly desiring to see thee, remembering thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

5 calling to mind the unfeigned faith which {has been} in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and in thy mother Eunice, and I am persuaded that in thee also.

6 For which cause I put thee in mind to rekindle the gift of God which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

7 For God has not given us a spirit of cowardice, but of power, and of love, and of wise discretion.

8 Be not therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but suffer evil along with the glad tidings, according to the power of God;

9 who has saved us, and has called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to {his} own purpose and grace, which {was} given to us in Christ Jesus before {the} ages of time,

10 but has been made manifest now by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who has annulled death, and brought to light life and incorruptibility by the glad tidings;

11 to which *I* have been appointed a herald and apostle and teacher of {the} nations.

12 For which cause also I suffer these things; but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep for that day the deposit I have entrusted to him.

13 Have an outline of sound words, which {words} thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which {are} in Christ Jesus.

14 Keep, by the Holy Spirit which dwells in us, the good deposit entrusted.

15 Thou knowest this, that all who {are} in Asia, of whom is Phygellus and Hermogenes, have turned away from me.

16 The Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he has often refreshed me, and has not been ashamed of my chain;

17 but being in Rome sought me out very diligently, and found {me} -

18 the Lord grant to him to find mercy from {the} Lord in that day-and how much service he rendered in Ephesus *thou* knowest best.

2 A Timothée, mon fils bien-aimé, que la grâce, la miséricorde et la paix te soient données de la part de Dieu le Père, et de la part de Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur.

3 Je rends grâces à Dieu, lequel je sers dès mes ancêtres avec une pure conscience, faisant sans cesse mention de toi dans mes prières nuit et jour.

4 Me souvenant de tes larmes, je désire fort de te voir afin que je sois rempli de joie;

5 Et me souvenant de la foi sincère qui est en toi, et qui a premièrement habité en Loïs, ta grand-mère, et en Eunice, ta mère, et je suis persuadé qu'elle [habite] aussi en toi.

6 C'est pourquoi je t'exhorte de ranimer le don de Dieu, qui est en toi par l'imposition de mes mains.

7 Car Dieu ne nous a pas donné un esprit de timidité, mais de force, de charité et de prudence.

8 Ne prends donc point à honte le témoignage de notre Seigneur, ni moi, qui suis son prisonnier; mais prends part aux afflictions de l'Evangile, selon la puissance de Dieu;

9 Qui nous a sauvés, et qui nous a appelés par une sainte vocation, non selon nos œuvres, mais selon son propre dessein, et selon la grâce qui nous a été donnée en Jésus-Christ avant les temps éternels;

10 Et qui maintenant a été manifestée par l'apparition de notre Sauveur Jésus-Christ, qui a détruit la mort, et qui a mis en lumière la vie et l'immortalité par l'Evangile;

11 Pour lequel j'ai été établi Prédicateur, Apôtre, et Docteur des Gentils.

12 C'est pourquoi aussi je souffre ces choses; mais je n'en ai point de honte; car je connais celui en qui j'ai cru, et je suis persuadé qu'il est puissant pour garder mon dépôt jusqu'à cette journée-là.

13 Retiens le vrai patron des saines paroles que tu as entendues de moi, dans la foi et dans la charité qui est en Jésus-Christ.

14 Garde le bon dépôt par le Saint-Esprit qui habite en nous.

15 Tu sais ceci, que tous ceux qui [sont] en Asie, se sont éloignés de moi; entre lesquels sont Phygelle et Hermogène.

16 Le Seigneur fasse miséricorde à la maison d'Onésiphore : car souvent il m'a consolé, et il n'a point eu honte de ma chaîne;

17 Au contraire, quand il a été à Rome, il m'a cherché très soigneusement, et il m'a trouvé.

18 Le Seigneur lui fasse trouver miséricorde envers le Seigneur en cette journée-là; et tu sais mieux [que personne] combien il m'a rendu de services à Ephèse.
