1 And the whole earth had one language, and the same words.
2 And it came to pass as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and dwelt there.
3 And they said one to another, Come on, let us make bricks, and burn {them} thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.
4 And they said, Come on, let us build ourselves a city and a tower, the top of which {may reach} to the heavens; and let us make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.
5 And Jehovah came down to see the city and the tower which the children of men built.
6 And Jehovah said, Behold, the people is one, and have all one language; and this have they begun to do. And now will they be hindered in nothing that they meditate doing.
7 Come, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
8 And Jehovah scattered them thence over the face of the whole earth. And they left off building the city.
9 Therefore was its name called Babel; because Jehovah there confounded the language of the whole earth. And Jehovah scattered them thence over the face of the whole earth.
10 These are the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood.
11 And Shem lived after he had begotten Arphaxad five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.
12 And Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begot Shelah.
13 And Arphaxad lived after he had begotten Shelah four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.
14 And Shelah lived thirty years, and begot Eber.
15 And Shelah lived after he had begotten Eber four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.
16 And Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot Peleg.
17 And Eber lived after he had begotten Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.
18 And Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu.
19 And Peleg lived after he had begotten Reu two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.
20 And Reu lived thirty-two years, and begot Serug.
21 And Reu lived after he had begotten Serug two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.
22 And Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor.
23 And Serug lived after he had begotten Nahor two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.
24 And Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot Terah.
25 And Nahor lived after he had begotten Terah a hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.
26 And Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
27 And these are the generations of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot.
28 And Haran died before the face of his father Terah in the land of his nativity at Ur of the Chaldeans.
29 And Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, a daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah.
30 And Sarai was barren: she had no child.
31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth together out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan, and came as far as Haran, and dwelt there.
32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.
1 Alors toute la terre avait un même langage, et une même parole.
2 Mais il arriva qu'étant partis d'Orient, ils trouvèrent une campagne au pays de Sinhar, où ils habitèrent.
3 Et ils se dirent l'un à l'autre : Or ça, faisons des briques, et les cuisons très bien au feu. Ils eurent donc des briques au lieu de pierres, et le bitume leur fut au lieu de mortier.
4 Puis ils dirent : Or ça, bâtissons-nous une ville, et une tour de laquelle le sommet soit jusqu'aux cieux; et acquérons-nous de la réputation, de peur que nous ne soyons dispersés sur toute la terre.
5 Alors l'Eternel descendit pour voir la ville et la tour que les fils des hommes bâtissaient.
6 Et l'Eternel dit : Voici, ce n'est qu'un seul et même peuple, ils ont un même langage, et ils commencent à travailler; et maintenant rien ne les empêchera d'exécuter ce qu'ils ont projeté.
7 Or ça, descendons, et confondons là leur langage, afin qu'ils n'entendent point le langage l'un de l'autre.
8 Ainsi l'Eternel les dispersa de là par toute la terre, et ils cessèrent de bâtir la ville.
9 C'est pourquoi son nom fut appelé Babel; car l'Eternel y confondit le langage de toute la terre, et de là il les dispersa sur toute la terre.
10 C'est ici la postérité de Sem : Sem âgé de cent ans, engendra Arpacsad, deux ans après le déluge.
11 Et Sem après qu'il eut engendré Arpacsad, vécut cinq cents ans, et engendra des fils et des filles.
12 Et Arpacsad vécut trente-cinq ans, et engendra Sélah.
13 Et Arpacsad après qu'il eut engendré Sélah, vécut quatre cent trois ans, et engendra des fils et des filles.
14 Et Sélah ayant vécu trente ans, engendra Héber.
15 Et Sélah après qu'il eut engendré Héber, vécut quatre cent trois ans, et engendra des fils et des filles.
16 Et Héber ayant vécu trente-quatre ans, engendra Péleg.
17 Et Héber après qu'il eut engendré Péleg, vécut quatre cent trente ans, et engendra des fils et des filles.
18 Et Péleg ayant vécu trente ans, engendra Réhu.
19 Et Péleg après qu'il eut engendré Réhu, vécut deux cent neuf ans, et engendra des fils et des filles.
20 Et Réhu ayant vécu trente-deux ans, engendra Sérug.
21 Et Réhu après qu'il eut engendré Sérug, vécut deux cent sept ans, et engendra des fils et des filles.
22 Et Sérug ayant vécu trente ans, engendra Nacor.
23 Et Sérug après qu'il eut engendré Nacor, vécut deux cents ans, et engendra des fils et des filles.
24 Et Nacor ayant vécu vingt-neuf ans, engendra Taré.
25 Et Nacor après qu'il eut engendré Taré, vécut cent dix-neuf ans, et engendra des fils et des filles.
26 Et Taré ayant vécu soixante-dix ans, engendra Abram, Nacor, et Haran.
27 Et c'est ici la postérité de Taré : Taré engendra Abram, Nacor, et Haran; et Haran engendra Lot.
28 Et Haran mourut en la présence de son père, au pays de sa naissance, à Ur des Chaldéens.
29 Et Abram et Nacor prirent chacun une femme. Le nom de la femme d'Abram fut Saraï; et le nom de la femme de Nacor fut Milca, fille de Haran, père de Milca et de Jisca.
30 Et Saraï était stérile, [et] n'avait point d'enfants.
31 Et Taré prit son fils Abram, et Lot fils de son fils, [qui était] fils de Haran, et Saraï sa belle-fille, femme d'Abram son fils, et ils sortirent ensemble d'Ur des Chaldéens pour aller au pays de Canaan, et ils vinrent jusqu'à Caran, et y demeurèrent.
32 Et les jours de Taré furent deux cent cinq ans; puis il mourut à Caran.
