1 And Jehovah said to me, Take thee a great tablet, and write thereon with a man's style, concerning Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

2 And I took unto me to witness, sure witnesses, Urijah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.

3 And I came near to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son; and Jehovah said unto me, Call his name, Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

4 For before the lad knoweth to cry, My father! and, My mother! the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.

5 And Jehovah spoke again to me, saying,

6 Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah which flow softly, and rejoiceth in Rezin and in the son of Remaliah,

7 therefore behold, the Lord will bring up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, the king of Assyria and all his glory; and he shall mount up over all his channels, and go over all his banks:

8 and he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow it and go further, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel!

9 Rage, ye peoples, and be broken in pieces! And give ear, all ye distant parts of the earth: Gird yourselves, and be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and be broken in pieces!

10 Settle a plan, and it shall come to nought; speak a word, and it shall not stand: for *God is with us.

11 For Jehovah spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and he instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying,

12 Ye shall not say, Conspiracy, of everything of which this people saith, Conspiracy; and fear ye not their fear, and be not in dread.

13 Jehovah of hosts, him shall ye sanctify; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.

14 And he will be for a sanctuary; and for a stone of stumbling, and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

15 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.

17 And I will wait for Jehovah, who hideth his face from the house of Jacob; and I will look for him.

18 Behold, I and the children that Jehovah hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel, from Jehovah of hosts, who dwelleth in mount Zion.

19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto the necromancers and unto the soothsayers, who chirp and who mutter, {say,} Shall not a people seek unto their God? {Will they go} for the living unto the dead?

20 To the law and the testimony! If they speak not according to this word, for them there is no daybreak.

21 And they shall pass through it, hard pressed and hungry; and it shall come to pass when they are hungry, they will fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and will gaze upward:

22 and they will look to the earth; and behold, trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they shall be driven into thick darkness.

1 Et l'Eternel me dit; Prends-toi un grand rouleau, et y écris avec une touche, en grosses lettres; QU'ON SE DEPECHE DE BUTINER; IL HATE LE PILLAGE.

2 De quoi je pris avec moi des fidèles témoins, [savoir] Urie le Sacrificateur, et Zacharie fils de Jébéréchia.

3 Puis je m'approchai de la Prophétesse, laquelle conçut, et enfanta un fils; et l'Eternel me dit; appelle son nom Mahersalal-has-baz.

4 Car avant que l'enfant sache crier, mon père! et ma mère! on enlèvera la puissance de Damas, et le butin de Samarie, devant le Roi d'Assur.

5 Et l'Eternel continua encore de me parler, en disant;

6 Parce que ce peuple a rejeté les eaux de Siloé qui vont doucement, et qu'il s'est réjoui de Retsin, et du fils de Rémalja;

7 Pour cette cause, voici, le Seigneur s'en va faire venir sur eux les eaux du fleuve, fortes, et grosses, [savoir] le Roi d'Assur, et toute sa gloire, et ce [fleuve] montera par-dessus tous ses courants d'eau, et ira par-dessus tous ses bords.

8 Et il traversera en Juda, et se débordera, et passera tellement qu'il atteindra jusqu'au cou; et les étendues de ses ailes rempliront la largeur de ton pays, ô Emmanuel!

9 Peuples, alliez-vous, et soyez froissés; et prêtez l'oreille, vous tous qui êtes d'un pays éloigné; équipez-vous, et soyez froissés; équipez-vous, et soyez froissés.

10 Prenez conseil, et il sera dissipé; dites la parole, et elle n'aura point d'effet, parce que le [Dieu] Fort est avec nous.

11 Car ainsi m'a dit l'Eternel avec une main forte, et il m'a instruit de n'aller point par le chemin de ce peuple-ci, en [me] disant;

12 Ne dites point, Conjuration, toutes les fois que ce peuple dit, Conjuration; et ne craignez point ce qu'il craint, et ne vous en épouvantez point.

13 Sanctifiez l'Eternel des armées, lui-même; et qu'il soit votre crainte, et votre épouvantement.

14 Et il [vous] sera pour sanctuaire; mais il sera une pierre d'achoppement, et un rocher de trébuchement aux deux maisons d'Israël; en piége et en filets aux habitants de Jérusalem.

15 Et plusieurs d'entr'eux trébucheront, et tomberont, et seront froissés, et seront enlacés, et seront pris.

16 Empaquette le Témoignage, cachette la Loi parmi mes disciples.

17 J'attendrai donc l'Eternel, qui cache sa face de la maison de Jacob, et je m'attendrai à lui.

18 Me voici, avec les enfants que l'Eternel m'a donnés pour être un signe et un miracle en Israël, de par l'Eternel des armées, qui habite en la montagne de Sion.

19 Que s'ils vous disent; enquérez vous des esprits de Python, et des diseurs de bonne aventure, qui gazouillent et grommellent; [répondez]; le peuple ne s'enquerra-t-il point de son Dieu? [aller] pour les vivants aux morts!

20 A la Loi, et au Témoignage. Que s'ils ne parlent selon cette parole-ci, certainement il n'y aura point de lumière pour lui.

21 Et il sera errant sur la terre, étant endurci et affamé; et il arrivera que dans sa faim il se dépitera, et maudira son Roi et son Dieu; et il regardera en haut;

22 Puis il regardera vers la terre, et voilà la détresse, et les ténèbres, une effrayante angoisse, et il sera enfoncé dans l'obscurité.

23 Car [il n'y a] point eu d'obscurité épaisse pour celle qui a été affligée, au temps que le premier se déchargea légèrement vers le pays de Zabulon, et vers le pays de Nephthali; et que le dernier s'appesantit sur le chemin de la mer, au deçà du Jourdain dans la Galilée des Gentils.
