1 But there was a man from among the Pharisees, his name Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;
2 he came to him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art come a teacher from God, for none can do these signs that thou doest unless God be with him.
3 Jesus answered and said to him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except any one be born anew he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus says to him, How can a man be born being old? can he enter a second time into the womb of his mother and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except any one be born of water and of Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Do not wonder that I said to thee, It is needful that *ye* should be born anew.
8 The wind blows where it will, and thou hearest its voice, but knowest not whence it comes and where it goes: thus is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9 Nicodemus answered and said to him, How can these things be?
10 Jesus answered and said to him, Thou art the teacher of Israel and knowest not these things!
11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that which we know, and we bear witness of that which we have seen, and ye receive not our witness.
12 If I have said the earthly things to you, and ye believe not, how, if I say the heavenly things to you, will ye believe?
13 And no one has gone up into heaven, save he who came down out of heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, thus must the Son of man be lifted up,
15 that every one who believes on him may {not perish, but} have life eternal.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whosoever believes on him may not perish, but have life eternal.
17 For God has not sent his Son into the world that he may judge the world, but that the world may be saved through him.
18 He that believes on him is not judged: but he that believes not has been already judged, because he has not believed on the name of the only-begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the judgment, that light is come into the world, and men have loved darkness rather than light; for their works were evil.
20 For every one that does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light that his works may not be shewn as they are;
21 but he that practises the truth comes to the light, that his works may be manifested that they have been wrought in God.
22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he abode with them and baptised.
23 And John also was baptising in Aenon, near Salim, because there was a great deal of water there; and they came to {him} and were baptised:
24 for John was not yet cast into prison.
25 There was therefore a reasoning of the disciples of John with a Jew about purification.
26 And they came to John and said to him, Rabbi, he who was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, he baptises, and all come to him.
27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing unless it be given him out of heaven.
28 Ye yourselves bear me witness that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am sent before him.
29 He that has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices in heart because of the voice of the bridegroom: this my joy then is fulfilled.
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
31 He who comes from above is above all. He who has his origin in the earth is of the earth, and speaks {as} of the earth. He who comes out of heaven is above all,
32 {and} what he has seen and has heard, this he testifies; and no one receives his testimony.
33 He that has received his testimony has set to his seal that God is true;
34 for he whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives not the Spirit by measure.
35 The Father loves the Son, and has given all things {to be} in his hand.
36 He that believes on the Son has life eternal, and he that is not subject to the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides upon him.
1 Or il y avait un homme d'entre les Pharisiens, nommé Nicodème, qui était un des principaux d'entre les Juifs;
2 Lequel vint de nuit à Jésus, et lui dit : Maître, nous savons que tu es un Docteur venu de Dieu : car personne ne peut faire les miracles que tu fais, si Dieu n'est avec lui.
3 Jésus répondit, et lui dit : en vérité, en vérité je te dis : si quelqu'un n'est né de nouveau, il ne peut point voir le Royaume de Dieu.
4 Nicodème lui dit : comment peut naître un homme quand il est vieux? peut-il rentrer dans le sein de sa mère, et naître une seconde fois?
5 Jésus répondit : en vérité, en vérité je te dis : si quelqu'un n'est né d'eau et d'esprit, il ne peut point entrer dans le Royaume de Dieu.
6 Ce qui est né de la chair, est chair; et ce qui est né de l'Esprit, est esprit.
7 Ne t'étonne pas de ce que je t'ai dit : il vous faut être nés de nouveau.
8 Le vent souffle où il veut, et tu en entends le son; mais tu ne sais d'où il vient, ni où il va : il en est ainsi de tout homme qui est né de l'Esprit.
9 Nicodème répondit, et lui dit : comment se peuvent faire ces choses?
10 Jésus répondit, et lui dit : tu es Docteur d'Israël, et tu ne connais point ces choses!
11 En vérité, en vérité je te dis : que ce que nous savons, nous le disons; et ce que nous avons vu, nous le témoignons; mais vous ne recevez point notre témoignage.
12 Si je vous ai dit ces choses terrestres, et vous ne les croyez point, comment croirez-vous si je vous dis des choses célestes?
13 Car personne n'est monté au ciel, sinon celui qui est descendu du ciel, [savoir] le Fils de l'homme qui est au ciel.
14 Or comme Moïse éleva le serpent au désert, ainsi il faut que le Fils de l'homme soit élevé;
15 Afin que quiconque croit en lui ne périsse point, mais qu'il ait la vie éternelle,
16 Car Dieu a tant aimé le monde, qu'il a donné son Fils unique, afin que quiconque croit en lui ne périsse point, mais qu'il ait la vie éternelle.
17 Car Dieu n'a point envoyé son Fils au monde pour condamner le monde, mais afin que le monde soit sauvé par lui.
18 Celui qui croit en lui ne sera point condamné ; mais celui qui ne croit point est déjà condamné ; parce qu'il n'a point crut au Nom du Fils unique de Dieu.
19 Or c'est ici le sujet de la condamnation, que la lumière est venue au monde, et que les hommes ont mieux aimé les ténèbres que la lumière, parce que leurs œuvres étaient mauvaises.
20 Car quiconque s'adonne à des choses mauvaises, hait la lumière, et ne vient point à la lumière, de peur que ses œuvres ne soient censurées.
21 Mais celui qui s'adonne à la vérité, vient à la lumière, afin que ses œuvres soient manifestées, parce qu'elles sont faites selon Dieu.
22 Après ces choses Jésus vint avec ses Disciples au pays de Judée; et il demeurait là avec eux, et baptisait.
23 Or Jean baptisait aussi en Enon, près de Salim, parce qu'il y avait là beaucoup d'eau; et on venait là, et on y était baptisé.
24 Car Jean n'avait pas encore été mis en prison.
25 Or il y eut une question mue par les disciples de Jean avec les Juifs, touchant la purification.
26 Et ils vinrent à Jean, et lui dirent : Maître, celui qui était avec toi au-delà du Jourdain, [et] à qui tu as rendu témoignage, voilà, il baptise, et tous viennent à lui.
27 Jean répondit, et dit : l'homme ne peut recevoir aucune chose, si elle ne lui est donnée du ciel.
28 Vous-mêmes m'êtes témoins que j'ai dit : ce n'est pas moi qui suis le Christ, mais je suis envoyé devant lui.
29 Celui qui possède l'Epouse est l'Epoux; mais l'ami de l'Epoux qui assiste, et qui l'entend, est tout réjoui par la voix de l'Epoux; c'est pourquoi cette joie que j'ai, est accomplie.
30 Il faut qu'il croisse, et que je diminue.
31 Celui qui est venu d'en haut, est au-dessus de tous; celui qui est venu de la terre, est de la terre, et il parle [comme venu] de la terre; celui qui est venu du ciel, est au-dessus de tous :
32 Et ce qu'il a vu et ouï, il le témoigne; mais personne ne reçoit son témoignage.
33 Celui qui a reçu son témoignage a scellé que Dieu est véritable.
34 Car [celui] que Dieu a envoyé annonce les paroles de Dieu; car Dieu ne lui donne point l'Esprit par mesure.
35 Le Père aime le Fils, et il lui a donné toutes choses en main.
36 Qui croit au Fils, a la vie éternelle; mais qui désobéit au Fils, ne verra point la vie; mais la colère de Dieu demeure sur lui.
