1 And it came to pass after the death of Joshua that the children of Israel asked Jehovah, saying, Which of us shall go up against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
2 And Jehovah said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
3 And Judah said to Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, and let us fight against the Canaanites, and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot; and Simeon went with him.
4 And Judah went up; and Jehovah delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they smote them in Bezek, ten thousand men.
5 And they found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
6 And Adoni-Bezek fled, and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
7 And Adoni-Bezek said, Seventy kings, with their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gleaned under my table: as I have done, so God has requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
8 And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
9 And afterwards the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the hill-country, and in the south, and in the lowland.
10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron-the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-Arba; and they slew Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.
11 And from there he went against the inhabitants of Debir; now the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher.
12 And Caleb said, He that smites Kirjath-sepher and takes it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife.
13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.
14 And it came to pass as she came, that she urged him to ask of her father the field; and she sprang down from the ass. And Caleb said to her, What wouldest thou?
15 And she said to him, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a southern land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, had gone up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.
17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it; and they called the name of the city Hormah.
18 And Judah took Gazah and its border, and Ashkelon and its border, and Ekron and its border.
19 And Jehovah was with Judah; and he took possession of the hill-country, for he did not dispossess the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
20 And they gave to Caleb Hebron, as Moses had said; and he dispossessed from thence the three sons of Anak.
21 And the children of Benjamin did not dispossess the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.
22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel; and Jehovah was with them.
23 And the house of Joseph sent to search out Bethel; now the name of the city before was Luz.
24 And the guards saw a man come forth out of the city, and said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, how {we} may enter into the city, and we will shew thee kindness.
25 And he shewed them how to enter into the city. And they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.
27 And Manasseh did not dispossess Beth-shean and its dependent villages, nor Taanach and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its dependent villages; and the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
28 And it came to pass when Israel became strong, that they made the Canaanites tributary; but they did not utterly dispossess them.
29 And Ephraim did not dispossess the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt among them in Gezer.
30 Zebulun did not dispossess the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.
31 Asher did not dispossess the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor Ahlab, nor Achzib, nor Helbah, nor Aphik, nor Rehob;
32 and the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not dispossess them.
33 Naphtali did not dispossess the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; and he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, but the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries to them.
34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill-country, for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley.
35 And the Amorites would dwell on mount Heres, in Ajalon and in Shaalbim; but the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, and they became tributaries.
36 And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upwards.

2 Et l'Eternel répondit : Juda montera; voici, j'ai livré le pays entre ses mains.
3 Et Juda dit à Siméon son frère : Monte avec moi en mon partage, et nous ferons la guerre aux Cananéens; et j'irai aussi avec toi en ton partage. Ainsi Siméon alla avec lui.
4 Juda donc monta, et l'Eternel livra les Cananéens et les Phérésiens entre leurs mains; et ils battirent en Bézec dix mille hommes.
5 Or ayant trouvé Adoni-bézec en Bézec, ils combattirent contre lui, et frappèrent les Cananéens et les Phérésiens.
6 Et Adoni-bézec s'enfuit, mais ils le poursuivirent; et l'ayant pris, ils lui coupèrent les pouces de ses mains et de ses pieds.
7 Alors Adoni-bézec dit : Soixante et dix Rois, dont les pouces des mains et des pieds avaient été coupés, ont recueilli [du pain] sous ma table; comme j'ai fait, Dieu m'a ainsi rendu; et ayant été amené à Jérusalem, il y mourut.
8 Or les enfants de Juda avaient fait la guerre contre Jérusalem, et l'avaient prise, et ils avaient fait passer [ses habitants] au tranchant de l'épée, et mis la ville en feu.
9 Puis les enfants de Juda étaient descendus pour faire la guerre aux Cananéens, qui habitaient dans les montagnes, et au Midi, et dans la plaine.
10 Juda donc s'en était allé contre les Cananéens qui habitaient à Hébron; or le nom d'Hébron était auparavant Kirjath-Arbah; et il avait frappé Sesaï, Ahiman et Talmaï.
11 Et de là il était allé contre les habitants de Débir, le nom de laquelle était auparavant Kirjath-sépher.
12 Et Caleb avait dit : Qui frappera Kirjath-sépher et la prendra, je lui donnerai ma fille Hacsa pour femme.
13 Et Hothniël, fils de Kénas, frère puîné de Caleb, la prit; et [Caleb] lui donna sa fille Hacsa pour femme.
14 Et il arriva que comme elle s'en allait, elle l'incita à demander à son père un champ; puis elle descendit impétueusement de dessus son âne; et Caleb lui dit : Qu'as-tu?
15 Et elle lui répondit : Donne-moi un présent; puisque tu m'as donné une terre sèche, donne-moi aussi des sources d'eaux. Et Caleb lui donna les fontaines [du quartier] de dessus, et les fontaines [du quartier] de dessous.
16 Or les enfants du Kénien, beau-père de Moïse, étaient montés de la ville des palmes avec les enfants de Juda, au désert de Juda, qui est au Midi de Harad ; parce qu'ils avaient marché et demeuré avec le peuple.
17 Puis Juda s'en alla avec Siméon son frère, et ils frappèrent les Cananéens qui habitaient à Tsephath, et la détruisirent à la façon de l'interdit, c'est pourquoi on appela la ville du nom de Horma.
18 Juda prit aussi Gaza avec ses confins; Askelon avec ses confins; et Hékron avec ses confins.
19 Et l'Eternel fut avec Juda, et ils dépossédèrent [les habitants] de la montagne : mais ils ne dépossédèrent point les habitants de la vallée, parce qu'ils avaient des chariots de fer.
20 Et on donna, selon que Moïse l'avait dit, Hébron à Caleb; qui en déposséda les trois fils de Hanak.
21 Quant aux enfants de Benjamin, ils ne dépossédèrent point le Jébusien qui habitait à Jérusalem; c'est pourquoi le Jébusien a habité avec les enfants de Benjamin à Jérusalem jusqu'à ce jour.
22 Ceux aussi de la maison de Joseph montèrent contre Bethel, et l'Eternel fut avec eux.
23 Et ceux de la maison de Joseph firent reconnaître Bethel, dont le nom était auparavant, Luz.
24 Et les espions virent un homme qui sortait de la ville, auquel ils dirent : Nous te prions de nous montrer un endroit par où l'on puisse entrer dans la ville, et nous te ferons grâce.
25 Il leur montra donc un endroit par où l'on pouvait entrer dans la ville, et ils la firent passer au tranchant de l'épée; mais ils laissèrent aller cet homme-là, et toute sa famille.
26 Puis cet homme s'en étant allé au pays des Héthiens, y bâtit une ville, et l'appela Luz, qui est son nom jusqu'à ce jour.
27 Manassé aussi ne déposséda point [les habitants] de Beth-séan, ni des villes de son ressort, ni [les habitants] de Tahanac, ni des villes de son ressort; ni les habitants de Dor, ni des villes de son ressort; ni les habitants de Jibléham, ni des villes de son ressort, ni les habitants de Meguiddo, ni des villes de son ressort; et les Cananéens osèrent encore habiter en ce pays-là.
28 Il est vrai qu'il arriva que quand Israël fut devenu plus fort, il rendît les Cananéens tributaires; mais il ne les déposséda pas entièrement.
29 Ephraïm aussi ne déposséda point les Cananéens qui habitaient à Guézer; mais les Cananéens habitèrent avec lui à Guézer.
30 Zabulon ne déposséda point les habitants de Kitron, ni les habitants de Nahalol; mais les Cananéens habitèrent avec lui, et lui furent tributaires.
31 Aser ne déposséda point les habitants de Hacco, ni les habitants de Sidon, ni d'Ahlab, ni d'Aczib, ni d'Helba, ni d'Aphik, ni de Rehob.
32 Mais ceux d'Aser habitèrent parmi les Cananéens habitants du pays; car ils ne les dépossédèrent point.
33 Nephthali ne déposséda point les habitants de Beth-sémes, ni les habitants de Beth-hanath, mais il habita parmi les Cananéens habitants du pays; et les habitants de Beth-sémes, et de Beth-hanath lui furent tributaires.
34 Et les Amorrhéens tinrent les enfants de Dan fort resserrés dans la montagne, et ils ne souffraient point qu'ils descendissent dans la vallée.
35 Et ces Amorrhéens-là osèrent encore habiter à Har-Hérés, à Ajalon, et à Sahalbim; mais la main de la maison de Joseph étant devenue plus forte, ils furent rendus tributaires.
36 Or la contrée des Amorrhéens [était] depuis la montée de Hakrabbim, depuis la roche, et au-dessus.
