1 This, a second letter, beloved, I already write to you, in {both} which I stir up, in the way of putting you in remembrance, your pure mind,

2 to be mindful of the words spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of the Lord and Saviour by your apostles;

3 knowing this first, that there shall come at {the} close of the days mockers with mocking, walking according to their own lusts,

4 and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for from the time the fathers fell asleep all things remain thus from {the} beginning of {the} creation.

5 For this is hidden from them through their own wilfulness, that heavens were of old, and an earth, having its subsistence out of water and in water, by the word of God,

6 through which {waters} the then world, deluged with water, perished.

7 But the present heavens and the earth by his word are laid up in store, kept for fire unto a day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

8 But let not this one thing be hidden from you, beloved, that one day with {the} Lord {is} as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

9 {The} Lord does not delay his promise, as some account of delay, but is longsuffering towards you, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

10 But the day of {the} Lord will come as a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, and {the} elements, burning with heat, shall be dissolved, and {the} earth and the works in it shall be burnt up.

11 All these things then being to be dissolved, what ought ye to be in holy conversation and godliness,

12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, by reason of which {the} heavens, being on fire, shall be dissolved, and {the} elements, burning with heat, shall melt?

13 But, according to his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness.

14 Wherefore, beloved, as ye wait for these things, be diligent to be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless;

15 and account the longsuffering of our Lord {to be} salvation; according as our beloved brother Paul also has written to you according to the wisdom given to him,

16 as also in all {his} epistles, speaking in them of these things; among which some things are hard to be understood, which the untaught and ill-established wrest, as also the other scriptures, to their own destruction.

17 *Ye* therefore, beloved, knowing {these} things before, take care lest, being led away along with the error of the wicked, ye should fall from your own stedfastness:

18 but grow in grace, and in {the} knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him {be} glory both now and to {the} day of eternity. Amen.

1 Mes bien-aimés, c'est ici la seconde Lettre que je vous écris, afin de réveiller dans l'une et dans l'autre par mes avertissements les sentiments purs [que vous avez].

2 [Et] afin que vous vous souveniez des paroles qui ont été dites auparavant par les saints Prophètes, et du commandement [que vous avez reçu] de nous, qui sommes Apôtres du Seigneur et Sauveur.

3 Sur toutes choses, sachez qu'aux derniers jours il viendra des moqueurs, se conduisant selon leurs propres convoitises;

4 Et disant : où est la promesse de son avènement? car depuis que les pères sont endormis, toutes choses demeurent comme elles ont été dès le commencement de la création.

5 Car ils ignorent volontairement ceci, que les cieux ont été [faits] de toute ancienneté, et que la terre [est sortie] de l'eau, et qu'elle subsiste parmi l'eau, par la parole de Dieu;

6 Et que par ces choses-là le monde d'alors périt, étant submergé des eaux du déluge.

7 Mais les cieux et la terre qui sont maintenant, sont réservés par la même parole, étant gardés pour le feu au jour du jugement, et de la destruction des hommes impies.

8 Mais, [vous mes] bien-aimés, n'ignorez pas ceci, qu'un jour [est] devant le Seigneur comme mille ans, et mille ans comme un jour.

9 Le Seigneur ne retarde point [l'exécution de] sa promesse, comme quelques-uns estiment qu'il y ait du retardement, mais il est patient envers nous, ne voulant point qu'aucun périsse, mais que tous se repentent.

10 Or le jour du Seigneur viendra comme le larron dans la nuit, et en ce jour-là les cieux passeront avec un bruit sifflant de tempête, et les éléments seront dissous par l'ardeur [du feu], et la terre, et toutes les œuvres qui [sont] en elle, brûleront entièrement.

11 Puis donc que toutes ces choses se doivent dissoudre, quels vous faut-il être en saintes conversations, et en œuvres de piété?

12 En attendant, et en hâtant [par vos désirs] la venue du jour de Dieu, par lequel les cieux étant enflammés seront dissous, et les éléments se fondront par l'ardeur [du feu].

13 Mais nous attendons, selon sa promesse, de nouveaux cieux, et une nouvelle terre, où la justice habite.

14 C'est pourquoi, [mes] bien-aimés, en attendant ces choses, étudiez-vous à être trouvés de lui sans tache et sans reproche, en paix.

15 Et regardez la patience du Seigneur comme une preuve qu'il veut votre salut; comme Paul, notre frère bien-aimé, vous en a écrit selon la sagesse qui lui a été donnée;

16 Ainsi que dans toutes ses Lettres, il parle de ces points, dans lesquels il y a des choses difficiles à entendre, que les ignorants et les mal-assurés tordent, comme [ils tordent] aussi les autres Ecritures, à leur propre perdition.

17 Vous donc mes bien-aimés, puisque vous en êtes déjà avertis, prenez garde qu'étant emportés avec les autres par la séduction des abominables, vous ne veniez à déchoir de votre fermeté.

18 Mais croissez en la grâce et en la connaissance de notre Seigneur et Sauveur Jésus-Christ. A lui soit gloire maintenant, et jusqu'au jour d'éternité, Amen!
