1 How is the gold become dim! the most pure gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary poured out at the top of all the streets! 2 The sons of Zion, so precious, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter! 3 Even the jackals offer the breast, they give suck to their young; the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. 4 The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst; the young children ask bread, no man breaketh it unto them. 5 They that fed delicately are desolate in the streets; they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dung-hills. 6 And the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the reward of the sin of Sodom, which was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands were violently laid upon her. 7 Her Nazarites were purer than snow, whiter than milk; they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their figure was as sapphire. 8 Their visage is darker than blackness, they are not known in the streets; their skin cleaveth to their bones, it is withered, it is become like a stick. 9 The slain with the sword are happier than the slain with hunger; for these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field. 10 The hands of pitiful women have boiled their own children: they were their meat in the ruin of the daughter of my people. 11 Jehovah hath accomplished his fury; he hath poured out his fierce anger, and hath kindled a fire in Zion, which hath consumed the foundations thereof. 12 The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should enter into the gates of Jerusalem.
13 It is for the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, who have shed the blood of the righteous in the midst of her. 14 They wandered about blind in the streets; they were polluted with blood, so that men could not touch their garments. 15 They cried unto them, Depart! Unclean! Depart! depart, touch not! When they fled away, and wandered about, it was said among the nations, They shall no more sojourn there. 16 The face of Jehovah hath divided them; he will no more regard them. They respected not the persons of the priests, they favoured not the aged. 17 Our eyes still failed for our vain help; in our watching, we have watched for a nation that did not save. 18 They hunted our steps, that we could not go in our streets: our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come. 19 Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the heavens; they chased us hotly upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness. 20 The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Jehovah, was taken in their pits; of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.
21 Rejoice and be glad, daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz: the cup shall pass also unto thee; thou shalt be drunken, and make thyself naked. 22 The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will no more carry thee away into captivity. He will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will discover thy sins.

3 Chiar și șacalii își apleacă țâța și dau să sugă puilor lor,
dar fiica poporului meu a ajuns fără milă, ca struțiiIov 39:14,16. din pustie.
4 LimbaPs. 22:15. sugarului i se lipește de cerul gurii, uscată de sete;
copiii cerCap. 2:11,12. pâine, dar nimeni nu le-o dă.
5 Cei ce se hrăneau cu bucate alese leșină pe ulițe.
Cei ce fuseseră crescuți în purpură se bucurăIov 24:8. acum de o grămadă de gunoi!
6 Căci vina fiicei poporului meu este mai mare decât păcatul Sodomei,
care a fost nimicităGen. 19:25. într-o clipă, fără să fi pus cineva mâna pe ea.
7 Voievozii ei erau mai strălucitori decât zăpada, mai albi decât laptele;
trupul le era mai roșu decât mărgeanul; fața le era ca safirul.
8 Dar acum înfățișarea le este mai negricioasăCap. 5:10.Ioel 2:6.Naum 2:10. decât funinginea, așa că nu mai sunt cunoscuți pe ulițe,
pielea le estePs. 102:5. lipită de oase, uscată ca lemnul.
9 Cei ce pier uciși de sabie sunt mai fericiți decât cei ce pier de foame,
care cad sleiți de puteri, din lipsa roadelor câmpului!

12 Împărații pământului n-ar fi crezut și niciunul din locuitorii lumii n-ar fi crezut
că potrivnicul care-l împresura are să intre pe porțile Ierusalimului.

14 Rătăceau ca orbii pe ulițe, mânjițiIer. 2:34. de sânge,
așa că nimeni nu puteaNum. 19:16. să se atingă de hainele lor.
15 „Depărtați-vă, necurațilorLev. 13:45.", li se striga, „la o parte, la o parte, nu vă atingeți de noi!"
Când fugeau pribegind încoace și încolo printre neamuri, se spunea: „Să nu mai locuiască aici!"
16 În mânia Lui, Domnul i-a împrăștiat și nu-Și mai îndreaptă privirile spre ei!
Vrăjmașul n-a căutatCap. 5:12. la fața preoților, nici n-a avut milă de cei bătrâni.
17 Și acolo ni se sfârșeau ochii2 Împ. 24:7.Is. 20:5;30:6,7.Ier. 37:7.Ezec. 29:16. și așteptam zadarnic ajutor!
Privirile ni se îndreptau cu nădejde spre un neam care totuși nu ne-a izbăvit.
18 Ne pândeau pașii2 Împ. 25:4,5., ca să ne împiedice să mergem pe ulițele noastre;
ni se apropia sfârșitulEzec. 7:2,3,6.Amos 8:2., ni se împliniseră zilele… Da, ne venise sfârșitul!
19 Prigonitorii noștri erau mai iuțiDeut. 28:49.Ier. 4:13. decât vulturii cerului.
Ne-au fugărit pe munți și ne-au pândit în pustie.
20 SuflareaGen. 2:7. Cap. 2:9. vieții noastre, unsul Domnului, a fost prinsIer. 52:6.Ezec. 12:13;19:4,8. în gropile lor, el,
despre care ziceam: „Vom trăi sub umbra lui printre neamuri."
21 Bucură-teEcl. 11:9. și saltă de bucurie, fiica Edomului, care locuiești în țara Uț!
Dar și la tine va trece potirulIer. 25:15,16,21.Obad. 10. și tu te vei îmbăta și te vei dezgoli!
22 Fiica Sionului, nelegiuireaIs. 40:2. îți este ispășită:
El nu te va mai trimite în robie.
Dar ție, fiica Edomului, îți vaPs. 137:7. pedepsi nelegiuirea
și îți va da pe față păcatele.
