1 And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, even in Chislev. 2 Now they of Beth-el had sent Sharezer and Regem-melech, and their men, to entreat the favour of the LORD, 3 and to speak unto the priests of the house of the LORD of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years? 4 Then came the word of the LORD of hosts unto me, saying, 5 Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and in the seventh month, even these seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me? 6 And when ye eat, and when ye drink, do not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves? 7 Should ye not hear the words which the LORD hath cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, and the South and the lowland were inhabited? 8 And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah, saying, 9 Thus hath the LORD of hosts spoken, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassion every man to his brother: 10 and oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. 11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. 12 Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by his spirit by the hand of the former prophets: therefore came there great wrath from the LORD of hosts. 13 And it came to pass that, as he cried, and they would not hear; so they shall cry, and I will not hear, said the LORD of hosts; 14 but I will scatter them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they have not known. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.

1 No quarto ano do reinado de Dario, no quarto dia do nono mês, que é o mês de quisleu, a palavra do Senhor veio a Zacarias. 2 Ora, o povo de Betel tinha enviado Sarezer, Regém-Meleque e seus companheiros, para suplicarem o favor do Senhor, 3 perguntando aos sacerdotes, que estavam na Casa do Senhor dos Exércitos, e aos profetas: "Devemos nós continuar a chorar, com jejum, no quinto mês, como temos feito por tantos anos?" 4 Então a palavra do Senhor dos Exércitos veio a mim, dizendo:

5 — Pergunte a todo o povo desta terra e aos sacerdotes: Quando vocês jejuaram e prantearam, no quinto e no sétimo mês, durante estes setenta anos, será que foi realmente para mim que vocês jejuaram? 6 Quando vocês comem e bebem, não é para vocês mesmos que comem e bebem? 7 Será que vocês não ouviram as palavras que o Senhor pregou pelo ministério dos profetas que nos precederam, quando Jerusalém estava habitada e em paz com as suas cidades ao redor dela, e o Sul e a Sefelá eram habitados?

8 A palavra do Senhor veio a Zacarias, dizendo:

9 — Assim falou o Senhor dos Exércitos: "Julguem segundo a verdade e sejam bondosos e misericordiosos uns com os outros. 10 Não oprimam a viúva, nem o órfão, nem o estrangeiro, nem o pobre, e que ninguém faça planos para prejudicar o seu próximo." 11 Porém eles não quiseram atender e, rebeldes, me viraram as costas e taparam os ouvidos, para que não ouvissem. 12 Sim, fizeram o seu coração duro como diamante, para que não ouvissem a lei, nem as palavras que o Senhor dos Exércitos tinha enviado pelo seu Espírito, mediante os profetas que nos precederam; daí veio a grande ira do Senhor dos Exércitos. 13 Visto que eu clamei, e eles não me ouviram, eles também clamaram, e eu não os ouvi, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos. 14 Com uma tempestade, eu os espalhei por todas as nações que eles não conheciam. E a terra foi devastada atrás deles, de modo que ninguém passava por ela, nem voltava; porque da terra desejável fizeram uma desolação.
