1 (24:2) E quando Saul fu tornato dall’inseguire i Filistei, gli vennero a dire: "Ecco, Davide è nel deserto di En-Ghedi".

2 (24:3) Allora Saul prese tremila uomini scelti fra tutto Israele, e andò in traccia di Davide e della sua gente fin sulle rocce delle capre salvatiche;

3 (24:4) e giunse ai parchi di pecore ch’eran presso la via; quivi era una spelonca, nella quale Saul entrò per fare i suoi bisogni. Or Davide e la sua gente se ne stavano in fondo alla spelonca.

4 (24:5) La gente di Davide gli disse: "Ecco il giorno nel quale l’Eterno ti dice: Vedi, io ti do nelle mani il tuo nemico; fa’ di lui quello che ti piacerà". Allora Davide s’alzò, e senza farsi scorgere tagliò il lembo del mantello di Saul.

5 (24:6) Ma dopo, il cuore gli batté, per aver egli tagliato il lembo del mantello di Saul.

6 (24:7) E Davide disse alla sua gente: "Mi guardi l’Eterno, dal commettere contro il mio signore, ch’è l’unto dell’Eterno, l’azione di mettergli le mani addosso; poich’egli è l’unto dell’Eterno".

7 (24:8) E colle sue parole Davide raffrenò la sua gente, e non le permise di gettarsi su Saul. E Saul si levò, uscì dalla spelonca e continuò il suo cammino.

8 (24:9) Poi anche Davide si levò, uscì dalla spelonca, e gridò dietro a Saul, dicendo: "O re, mio signore!" Saul si guardò dietro, e Davide s’inchinò con la faccia a terra e si prostrò.

9 (24:10) Davide disse a Saul: "Perché dài tu retta alle parole della gente che dice: Davide cerca di farti del male?

10 (24:11) Ecco in quest’ora stessa tu vedi coi tuoi propri occhi che l’Eterno t’avea dato oggi nelle mie mani in quella spelonca; qualcuno mi disse di ucciderti, ma io t’ho risparmiato, e ho detto: Non metterò le mani addosso al mio signore, perch’egli è l’unto dell’Eterno.

11 (24:12) Ora guarda, padre mio, guarda qui nella mia mano il lembo del tuo mantello. Se io t’ho tagliato il lembo del mantello e non t’ho ucciso, puoi da questo veder chiaro che non v’è nella mia condotta né malvagità né ribellione, e che io non ho peccato contro di te, mentre tu mi tendi insidie per tormi la vita!

12 (24:13) L’Eterno sia giudice fra me e te, e l’Eterno mi vendichi di te; ma io non ti metterò le mani addosso.

13 (24:14) Dice il proverbio antico: Il male vien dai malvagi; io quindi non ti metterò le mani addosso.

14 (24:15) Contro chi è uscito il re d’Israele? Chi vai tu perseguitando? Un can morto, una pulce.

15 (24:16) Sia dunque arbitro l’Eterno, e giudichi fra me e te, e vegga e difenda la mia causa e mi renda giustizia, liberandomi dalle tue mani".

16 (24:17) Quando Davide ebbe finito di dire queste parole a Saul, Saul disse: "E’ questa la tua voce, igliuol mio Davide?" E Saul alzò la voce e pianse.

17 (24:18) E disse a Davide: "Tu sei più giusto di me, poiché tu m’hai reso bene per male, mentre io t’ho reso male per bene.

18 (24:19) Tu hai mostrato oggi la bontà con la quale ti conduci verso di me; poiché l’Eterno m’avea dato nelle tue mani, e tu non m’hai ucciso.

19 (24:20) Se uno incontra il suo nemico, lo lascia egli andarsene in pace? Ti renda dunque l’Eterno il contraccambio del bene che m’hai fatto quest’oggi!

20 (24:21) Ora, ecco, io so che per certo tu regnerai, e che il regno d’Israele rimarrà stabile nelle tue mani.

21 (24:22) Or dunque giurami nel nome dell’Eterno che non distruggerai la mia progenie dopo di me, e che non estirperai il mio nome dalla casa di mio padre".

22 (24:23) E Davide lo giurò a Saul. Poi Saul se ne andò a casa sua, e Davide e la sua gente risaliron al loro forte rifugio.

1 And it cometh to pass when Saul hath turned back from after the Philistines, that they declare to him, saying, `Lo, David [is] in the wilderness of En-gedi.`

2 And Saul taketh three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and goeth to seek David and his men, on the front of the rocks of the wild goats,

3 and he cometh in unto folds of the flock, on the way, and there [is] a cave, and Saul goeth in to cover his feet; and David and his men in the sides of the cave are abiding.

4 And the men of David say unto him, `Lo, the day of which Jehovah said unto thee, Lo, I am giving thine enemy into thy hand, and thou hast done to him as it is good in thine eyes;` and David riseth and cutteth off the skirt of the upper robe which [is] on Saul -- gently.

5 And it cometh to pass afterwards that the heart of David smiteth him, because that he hath cut off the skirt which [is] on Saul,

6 and he saith to his men, `Far be it from me, by Jehovah; I do not do this thing to my lord -- to the anointed of Jehovah -- to put forth my hand against him, for the anointed of Jehovah he [is].`

7 And David subdueth his men by words, and hath not permitted them to rise against Saul; and Saul hath risen from the cave, and goeth on the way;

8 and David riseth afterwards, and goeth out from the cave, and calleth after Saul, saying, `My lord, O king!` And Saul looketh attentively behind him, and David boweth -- face to the earth -- and doth obeisance.

9 And David saith to Saul, `Why dost thou hear the words of man, saying, Lo, David is seeking thine evil?

10 Lo, this day have thine eyes seen how that Jehovah hath given thee to-day into my hand in the cave; and [one] said to slay thee, and [mine eye] hath pity on thee, and I say, I do not put forth my hand against my lord, for the anointed of Jehovah he [is].

11 `And, my father, see, yea see the skirt of thine upper robe in my hand; for by cutting off the skirt of thy upper robe, and I have not slain thee, know and see that there is not in my hand evil and transgression, and I have not sinned against thee, and thou art hunting my soul to take it!

12 `Jehovah doth judge between me and thee, and Jehovah hath avenged me of thee, and my hand is not on thee;

13 as saith the simile of the ancients, From the wicked goeth out wickedness, and my hand is not on thee.

14 `After whom hath the king of Israel come out? after whom art thou pursuing? -- after a dead dog! after one flea!

15 And Jehovah hath been for judge, and hath judged between me and thee, yea, he seeth and pleadeth my cause, and doth deliver me out of thy hand.`

16 And it cometh to pass, when David completeth to speak these words unto Saul, that Saul saith, `Is this thy voice, my son David?` and Saul lifteth up his voice, and weepeth.

17 And he saith unto David, `More righteous thou [art] than I; for thou hast done me good, and I have done thee evil;

18 and thou hast declared to-day how that thou hast done good with me, how that Jehovah shut me up into thy hand, and thou didst not slay me,

19 and that a man doth find his enemy, and hath sent him away in a good manner; and Jehovah doth repay thee good for that which thou didst to me this day.

20 `And, now, lo, I have known that thou dost certainly reign, and the kingdom of Israel hath stood in thy hand;

21 and, now, swear to me by Jehovah -- thou dost not cut off my seed after me, nor dost thou destroy my name from the house of my father.`

22 And David sweareth to Saul, and Saul goeth unto his house, and David and his men have gone up unto the fortress.
