1 L’anno undicesimo, il terzo mese, il primo giorno del mese, la parola dell’Eterno mi fu rivolta in questi termini:

2 "Figliuol d’uomo, di’ a Faraone re d’Egitto, e alla sua moltitudine: A chi somigli tu nella tua grandezza?

3 Ecco, l’Assiro era un cedro del Libano, dai bei rami, dall’ombra folta, dal tronco slanciato, dalla vetta sporgente fra il folto de’ rami.

4 Le acque lo nutrivano, l’abisso lo facea crescere, andando, coi suoi fiumi, intorno al luogo dov’era piantato, mentre mandava i suoi canali a tutti gli alberi dei campi.

5 Perciò la sua altezza era superiore a quella di tutti gli alberi della campagna, i suoi rami s’eran moltiplicati, e i suoi ramoscelli s’erano allungati per l’abbondanza delle acque che lo faceano sviluppare.

6 Tutti gli uccelli del cielo s’annidavano fra i suoi rami, tutte le bestie dei campi figliavano sotto i suoi ramoscelli, e tutte le grandi nazioni dimoravano alla sua ombra.

7 Era bello per la sua grandezza, per la lunghezza dei suoi rami, perché la sua radice era presso acque abbondanti.

8 I cedri non lo sorpassavano nel giardino di Dio; i cipressi non uguagliavano i suoi ramoscelli, e i platani non eran neppure come i suoi rami; nessun albero nel giardino di Dio lo pareggiava in bellezza.

9 Io l’avevo reso bello per l’abbondanza de’ suoi rami, e tutti gli alberi d’Eden, che sono nel giardino di io, gli portavano invidia.

10 Perciò, così parla il Signore, l’Eterno: Perché era salito a tanta altezza e sporgeva la sua vetta tra il olto de’ rami e perché il suo cuore s’era insuperbito della sua altezza,

11 io lo diedi in mano del più forte fra le nazioni perché lo trattasse a suo piacimento; per la sua empietà io lo scacciai.

12 Degli stranieri, i più violenti fra le nazioni, l’hanno tagliato e l’han lasciato in abbandono; sui monti e in tutte le valli son caduti i suoi rami, i suoi ramoscelli sono stati spezzati in tutti i burroni del paese, e tutti i popoli della terra si son ritirati dalla sua ombra, e l’hanno abbandonato.

13 Sul suo tronco caduto si posano tutti gli uccelli del cielo, e sopra i suoi rami stanno tutte le bestie de’ ampi.

14 Così è avvenuto affinché gli alberi tutti piantati presso alle acque non sian fieri della propria altezza, non sporgan più la vetta fra il folto de’ rami, e tutti gli alberi potenti che si dissetano alle acque non persistano nella loro fierezza; poiché tutti quanti son dati alla morte, alle profondità della terra, assieme ai figliuoli degli uomini, a quelli che scendon nella fossa.

15 Così parla il Signore, l’Eterno: Il giorno ch’ei discese nel soggiorno de’ morti, io feci fare cordoglio; a motivo di lui velai l’abisso, ne arrestai i fiumi, e le grandi acque furon fermate; a motivo di lui abbrunai il Libano, e tutti gli alberi de’ campi vennero meno a motivo di lui.

16 Al rumore della sua caduta fece tremare le nazioni, quando lo feci scendere nel soggiorno de’ morti con quelli che scendono nella fossa; e nelle profondità della terra si consolarono tutti gli alberi di Eden, i più scelti e i più belli del Libano, tutti quelli che si dissetavano alle acque.

17 Anch’essi discesero con lui nel soggiorno de’ morti, verso quelli che la spada ha uccisi: verso quelli che erano il suo braccio, e stavano alla sua ombra in mezzo alle nazioni.

18 A chi dunque somigli tu per gloria e per grandezza fra gli alberi d’Eden? Così tu sarai precipitato con gli alberi d’Eden nelle profondità della terra; tu giacerai in mezzo agl’incirconcisi, fra quelli che la spada ha uccisi. Tal sarà di Faraone con tutta la sua moltitudine, dice il Signore, l’Eterno".

1 And it cometh to pass, in the eleventh year, in the third [month], in the first of the month, hath a word of Jehovah been unto me, saying:

2 `Son of man, say unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and unto his multitude: To whom hast thou been like in thy greatness?

3 Lo, Asshur, a cedar in Lebanon, Fair in branch, and shading bough, and high in stature, And between thickets hath its foliage been.

4 Waters have made it great, The deep hath exalted him with its flowings, Going round about its planting, And its conduits it hath sent forth unto all trees of the field.

5 Therefore higher hath been his stature than all trees of the field, And multiplied are his boughs, and long are his branches, Because of many waters in his shooting forth,

6 In his boughs made a nest hath every fowl of the heavens, And under his branches brought forth hath every beast of the field, And in his shade dwell do all great nations.

7 And he is fair in his greatness, In the length of his thin shoots, For his root hath been by great waters.

8 Cedars have not hid him in the garden of God, Firs have not been like unto his boughs, And chesnut-trees have not been as his branches, No tree in the garden of God hath been like unto him in his beauty,

9 Fair I have made him in the multitude of his thin shoots, And envy him do all trees of Eden that [are] in the garden of God.

10 Therefore, thus said the Lord Jehovah: Because that thou hast been high in stature, And he yieldeth his foliage between thickets, And high is his heart in his haughtiness,

11 I give him into the hand of a god of nations, He dealeth sorely with him, In his wickedness I have cast him out.

12 And cut him off do strangers, The terrible of nations, and they leave him, On the mountains and in all valleys have his thin shoots fallen, And broken are his boughs at all streams of the land, And go down from his shade do all peoples of the land, and they leave him.

13 On his ruin dwell do all fowls of the heavens, And on his boughs have been all the beasts of the field,

14 In order that none of the trees of the waters May become haughty because of their stature, Nor give their foliage between thickets, Nor any drinking waters stand up unto them in their haughtiness, For all of them are given up to death, Unto the earth -- the lower part, In the midst of the sons of men, Unto those going down to the pit.

15 Thus said the Lord Jehovah: In the day of his going down to sheol I have caused mourning, I have covered for him the deep, and diminish its flowings, And restrained are many waters, And I make Lebanon black for him, And all trees of the field have been covered for him.

16 From the sound of his fall I have caused nations to shake, In My causing him to go down to sheol, With those going down to the pit, And comforted in the earth -- the lower part, are all trees of Eden, The choice and the good of Lebanon, All drinking waters.

17 Also they with him have gone down to sheol, Unto the pierced of the sword, And -- his arm -- they dwelt in his shade in the midst of nations.

18 Unto whom hast thou been thus like, In honour and in greatness among the trees of Eden, And thou hast been brought down with the trees of Eden, Unto the earth -- the lower part, In the midst of the uncircumcised thou liest, With the pierced of the sword? It [is] Pharaoh, and all his multitude, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah!`
