1 NEL principio del regno di Gioiachim, figliuolo di Giosia, re di Giuda, questa parola mi fu dal Signore indirizzata, dicendo:
2 Così ha detto il Signore: Presentati nel cortile della Casa del Signore, e pronunzia a tutte le città di Giuda che vengono per adorar nella Casa del Signore, tutte le parole che io ti ho comandato di dir loro; non sottrarne nulla.
3 Forse ubbidiranno, e si convertiranno ciascuno dalla sua via malvagia; ed io altresì mi pentirò del male, che penso di far loro per la malvagità de’ lor fatti.
4 Di’ loro adunque: Così ha detto il Signore: Se voi non mi ubbidite, per camminar nella mia Legge, la quale io vi ho proposta;
5 per ascoltar le parole dei miei servitori profeti, i quali io vi mando; a’ quali, benchè io li abbia mandati del continuo per ogni mattina, voi non avete però ubbidito;
6 io renderò questa Casa simile a Silo, e metterò questa città in maledizione appresso tutte le genti della terra
7 Or i sacerdoti, e i profeti, e tutto il popolo, udirono Geremia pronunziando queste parole nella Casa del Signore.
8 Laonde, dopo che Geremia ebbe fornito di pronunziare tutto ciò che il Signore gli avea comandato di dire a tutto il popolo, i sacerdoti, i profeti, e tutto il popolo lo presero, dicendo: Del tutto tu morrai.
9 Perchè hai tu profetizzato in Nome del Signore, dicendo: Questa Casa sarà come Silo, e questa città sarà deserta, senza abitatori? E tutto il popolo si adunò appresso di Geremia nella Casa del Signore.
10 E i principi di Giuda, avendo intese queste cose, salirono dalla casa del re alla Casa del Signore, e sedettero all’entrata della porta nuova della Casa del Signore.
11 E i sacerdoti, e i profeti parlarono a’ principi di Giuda, ed a tutto il popolo, dicendo: Quest’uomo deve esser giudicato a morte; perciocchè ha profetizzato contro a questa città, come voi avete udito co’ vostri propri orecchi.
12 E Geremia parlò a tutti i principi, ed a tutto il popolo, dicendo: Il Signore mi ha mandato per profetizzare contro a questa Casa, e contro a questa città, tutte le parole che voi avete udite.
13 Ora dunque, ammendate le vostre vie, e i vostri fatti, ed ubbidite alla voce del Signore Iddio vostro; e il Signore si pentirà del male ch’egli ha pronunziato contro a voi.
14 E quant’è a me, eccomi nelle vostre mani; fatemi secondo che vi parrà bene, e diritto.
15 Ma pur sappiate per certo che se voi mi fate morire, voi mettete del sangue innocente addosso a voi, ed a questa città, ed ai suoi abitanti; perciocchè in verità il Signore mi ha mandato a voi, per pronunziare a’ vostri orecchi tutte queste parole
16 Allora i principi, e tutto il popolo, dissero a’ sacerdoti, ed a’ profeti: Non vi è cagione di condannare quest’uomo a morte; conciossiachè egli ci abbia parlato in Nome del Signore Iddio nostro.
17 Ed alcuni degli anziani del paese di levarono, e parlarono a tutta la raunanza del popolo, dicendo:
18 Michea Morastita profetizzò a’ dì di Ezechia, re di Giuda, e parlò a tutto il popolo di Giuda, dicendo: Così ha detto il Signore degli eserciti: Sion sarà arata come un campo, e Gerusalemme sarà ridotta in monti di ruine, e la montagna del Tempio in poggi di boschi.
19 Ezechia, re di Giuda, e tutto Giuda, lo fecero eglino perciò morire? anzi non temette egli il Signore, e non supplicò egli al Signore? Laonde il Signore si pentì del male che egli avea ronunziato contro a loro. Noi dunque facciamo un gran male contro alle anime nostre.
20 Ben vi fu anche un altro uomo, che profetizzò in Nome del Signore, cioè: Uria, figliuolo di Semaia, da Chiriat-iearim; il quale profetizzò contro a questa città, e contro a questo paese, secondo tutte le parole di Geremia.
21 E il re Gioiachim, e tutti i suoi uomini di valore, e tutti i principi, udirono le parole di esso; e il re procacciò di farlo morire; ma Uria l’intese, e temette, e se ne fuggì, ed entrò in Egitto.
22 Ma il re Gioiachim mandò degli uomini in Egitto, cioè Elnatan, figliuolo di Acbor, ed altri personaggi con lui.
23 Ed essi trassero Uria fuor di Egitto, e lo condussero al re Gioiachim; ed egli lo percosse con la spada, e fece gittare il suo corpo morto fra le sepolture del comun popolo.
24 Ma la mano di Ahicam, figliuolo di Safan, fu con Geremia, acciocchè non fosse messo in man del popolo, per farlo morire
1 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, came this word from Jehovah, saying,
2 Thus saith Jehovah: Stand in the court of Jehovah's house, and speak unto all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in Jehovah's house, all the words that I command thee to speak unto them: diminish not a word.
3 Peradventure they will hearken, and turn every man from his evil way, that I may repent me of the evil which I purpose to do unto them because of the wickedness of their doings.
4 And thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith Jehovah: If ye will not hearken unto me, to walk in my law, which I have set before you,
5 to hearken unto the words of my servants the prophets, whom I have sent unto you, even rising early and sending {them}, but ye have not hearkened,
6 -then will I make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.
7 And the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of Jehovah.
8 And it came to pass when Jeremiah had ended speaking all that Jehovah had commanded {him} to speak unto all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying, Thou shalt certainly die.
9 Why hast thou prophesied in the name of Jehovah, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant? And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of Jehovah.
10 And the princes of Judah heard these things; and they went up from the king's house unto the house of Jehovah, and sat in the entry of the new gate of Jehovah.
11 And the priests and the prophets spoke unto the princes and to all the people, saying, This man is worthy to die, for he hath prophesied against this city, as ye have heard with your ears.
12 And Jeremiah spoke to all the princes and to all the people, saying, Jehovah sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that ye have heard.
13 And now, amend your ways and your doings, and hearken to the voice of Jehovah your God; and Jehovah will repent him of the evil that he hath pronounced against you.
14 But as for me, behold, I am in your hand; do unto me as seemeth good and right in your eyes:
15 only know for certain that if ye put me to death, ye shall surely bring innocent blood upon yourselves, and upon this city, and upon the inhabitants thereof; for of a truth Jehovah hath sent me unto you to speak all these words in your ears.
16 And the princes and all the people said unto the priests and to the prophets, This man is not worthy to die; for he hath spoken to us in the name of Jehovah our God.
17 And there rose up certain of the elders of the land and spoke to all the congregation of the people, saying,
18 Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Zion shall be ploughed {as} a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.
19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death? Did he not fear Jehovah, and supplicate Jehovah, and Jehovah repented him of the evil that he had pronounced against them? And we should be doing a great evil against our souls.
20 And there was also a man that prophesied in the name of Jehovah, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjath-jearim: and he prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah;
21 and Jehoiakim the king, and all his mighty men, and all the princes, heard his words, and the king sought to put him to death; but Urijah heard it, and he was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt.
22 And Jehoiakim the king sent men into Egypt, Elnathan the son of Achbor, and men with him, into Egypt;
23 and they fetched forth Urijah out of Egypt, and brought him to Jehoiakim the king; and he slew him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of the children of the people.
24 -Nevertheless the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.
