1 E GIOBBE rispose, e disse:2 Ancor oggi il mio lamento è ribellione; Benchè la mia piaga sia aggravata sopra i miei sospiri.3 Oh! sapessi io pure ove trovare Iddio! Io andrei infino al suo trono;4 Io sporrei per ordine la mia ragione nel suo cospetto, Ed empierei la mia bocca di argomenti;5 Io saprei le parole ch’egli mi risponderebbe, E intenderei ciò ch’egli mi direbbe.6 Contenderebbe egli meco con grandezza di forza? No; anzi egli avrebbe riguardo a me.7 Ivi l’uomo diritto verrebbe a ragione con lui, Ed io sarei in perpetuo liberato dal mio giudice8 Ecco, se io vo innanzi, egli non vi è; Se indietro, io non lo scorgo;9 Se a man sinistra, quando egli opera, io nol veggo; Se a man destra, egli si nasconde, ed io non posso vederlo.10 Quando egli avrà conosciuta la mia via, E mi avrà esaminato, io uscirò fuori come oro.11 Il mio piè si è attenuto alle sue pedate; Io ho guardata la sua via, e non me ne son rivolto.12 Ed anche non ho rimosso d’innanzi a me il comandamento delle sue labbra; Io ho riposte appo me le parole della sua bocca, Più caramente che la mia provvisione ordinaria13 Ma, se egli è in un proponimento, chi ne lo storrà? Se l’anima sua desidera di fare una cosa, egli la farà.14 Egli certo compierà ciò ch’egli ha statuito di me; E molte tali cose sono appo lui.15 Perciò io sono smarrito per cagion di lui; Se io ci penso, io ho spavento di lui.16 Certo Iddio mi ha fatto struggere il cuore, E l’Onnipotente mi ha conturbato.17 Perchè non sono io stato troncato, per non veder le tenebre? E perchè ha egli nascosta l’oscurità d’innanzi a me?

1 And Job answereth and saith: --2 Also -- to-day [is] my complaint bitter, My hand hath been heavy because of my sighing.3 O that I had known -- and I find Him, I come in unto His seat,4 I arrange before Him the cause, And my mouth fill [with] arguments.5 I know the words He doth answer me, And understand what He saith to me.6 In the abundance of power doth He strive with me? No! surely He putteth [it] in me.7 There the upright doth reason with Him, And I escape for ever from my judge.8 Lo, forward I go -- and He is not, And backward -- and I perceive him not.9 [To] the left in His working -- and I see not, He is covered [on] the right, and I behold not.10 For He hath known the way with me, He hath tried me -- as gold I go forth.11 On His step hath my foot laid hold, His way I have kept, and turn not aside,12 The command of His lips, and I depart not. Above my allotted portion I have laid up The sayings of His mouth.13 And He [is] in one [mind], And who doth turn Him back? And His soul hath desired -- and He doth [it].14 For He doth complete my portion, And many such things [are] with Him.15 Therefore, from His presence I am troubled, I consider, and am afraid of Him.16 And God hath made my heart soft, And the Mighty hath troubled me.17 For I have not been cut off before darkness, And before me He covered thick darkness.
