Isaías 5

1 Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. 11 Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!*5.11 inflame: of, pursue 12 And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.

13 Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.*5.13 honourable…: Heb. glory are men of famine 14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it. 15 And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled: 16 But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.*5.16 God…: or, the holy God: Heb. the God the holy 17 Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.

18 Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope: 19 That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!

20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!*5.20 call…: Heb. say concerning evil, It is good, etc 21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!*5.21 in their own sight: Heb. before their face 22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink: 23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him! 24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.*5.24 fire: Heb. tongue of fire 25 Therefore is the anger of the LORD kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. 26 And he will lift up an ensign to the nations from far, and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth: and, behold, they shall come with speed swiftly: 27 None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken: 28 Whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent, their horses’ hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind: 29 Their roaring shall be like a lion, they shall roar like young lions: yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it. 30 And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea: and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is darkened in the heavens thereof.*5.30 sorrow: or, distress*5.30 and the light…: or, when it is light, it shall be dark in the destructions thereof

Cantique du bien-aimé, touchant la vigne. Prédictions contre la Judée ingrate.

1 Je chanterai maintenant pour mon ami le Cantique de mon Bien-aimé, touchant sa vigne. Mon ami avait une vigne en un coteau d’un lieu gras. 2 Et il l’environna d’une haie, et en ôta les pierres, et la planta de ceps exquis ; il bâtit aussi une tour au milieu d’elle, et y tailla une cuve ; or il s’attendait qu’elle produirait des raisins, mais elle a produit des grappes sauvages. 3 Maintenant donc vous habitants de Jérusalem, et vous hommes de Juda, jugez, je vous prie, entre moi et ma vigne. 4 Qu’y avait-il plus à faire à ma vigne que je ne lui aie fait ? pourquoi ai-je attendu qu’elle produisît des raisins, et elle a produit des grappes sauvages ? 5 Maintenant donc que je vous fasse entendre, je vous prie, ce que je m’en vais faire à ma vigne : J’ôterai sa haie, et elle sera broutée ; je romprai sa cloison, et elle sera foulée. 6 Et je la réduirai en désert, elle ne sera plus taillée ni fossoyée, et les ronces et les épines y croîtront ; et je commanderai aux nuées qu’elles ne fassent plus tomber de pluie sur elle. 7 Or la maison d’Israël est la vigne de l’Eternel des armées, et les hommes de Juda sont la plante en laquelle il prenait plaisir ; il en a attendu la droiture, et voici le saccagement ; la justice, et voici la clameur. 8 Malheur à ceux qui joignent maison à maison, et qui approchent un champ de l’autre, jusques à ce qu’il n’y ait plus d’espace, et que vous vous rendiez seuls habitants du pays. 9 L’Eternel des armées me fait entendre, disant : Si des maisons vastes ne sont réduites en désolation, et si les grandes et les belles maisons ne sont sans habitants ? 10 Même dix journaux de vigne ne feront qu’un Bath, et la semence d’un Homer ne fera qu’un Epha. 11 Malheur à ceux qui se lèvent de bon matin, qui recherchent la cervoise, qui demeurent jusqu’au soir, et jusqu’à ce que le vin les échauffe. 12 La harpe, la musette, le tambour, la flûte, et le vin sont dans leurs festins ; et ils ne regardent point l’oeuvre de l’Eternel, et ne voient point l’ouvrage de ses mains. 13 Mon peuple est emmené captif, parce qu’il n’a point eu de connaissance ; et les plus honorables d’entr’eux sont des pauvres, morts de faim, et leur multitude est asséchée de soif. 14 C’est pourquoi le sépulcre s’est élargi, et a ouvert sa gueule sans mesure ; et sa magnificence y descendra, sa multitude, sa pompe, et ceux qui s’y réjouissent. 15 Ceux du commun seront humiliés, et les personnes de qualité seront abaissées, et les yeux des hautains seront abaissés. 16 Et l’Eternel des armées sera haut élevé en jugement, et le Dieu Fort, le Saint sera sanctifié dans la justice. 17 Les agneaux paîtront selon qu’ils seront parqués, et allant d’un lieu à l’autre, ils mangeront les déserts où le bétail devenait gras. 18 Malheur à ceux qui tirent l’iniquité avec des câbles de vanité ; et le péché, comme avec des cordages de chariot ; 19 Qui disent ; qu’il se hâte, et qu’il fasse venir son oeuvre bientôt, afin que nous le voyions ; et que le conseil du Saint d’Israël s’avance, et qu’il vienne ; et nous saurons ce que c’est. 20 Malheur à ceux qui appellent le mal, bien, et le bien, mal ; qui font les ténèbres, lumière, et la lumière, ténèbres ; qui font l’amer, doux, et le doux, amer. 21 Malheur à ceux qui sont sages à leurs yeux, et intelligents en se considérant eux-mêmes. 22 Malheur à ceux qui sont puissants à boire le vin, et vaillants à avaler la cervoise ; 23 Qui justifient le méchant pour des présents, et qui ôtent à chacun des justes sa justice. 24 C’est pourquoi comme le flambeau de feu consume le chaume, et la flamme consume la balle, ils seront ainsi consumés ; leur racine sera comme la pourriture, et leur fleur sera détruite comme la poussière, parce qu’ils ont rebuté la Loi de l’Eternel des armées, et rejeté par mépris la parole du Saint d’Israël. 25 C’est pourquoi la colère de l’Eternel s’est embrasée contre son peuple, et il a étendu sa main sur lui, et l’a frappé ; et les montagnes en ont croulé, et leurs corps morts ont été mis en pièces au milieu des rues. Malgré tout cela il n’a point fait cesser sa colère, mais sa main est encore étendue. 26 Et il élèvera l’enseigne vers les nations éloignées, et sifflera à chacune d’elles depuis les bouts de la terre ; et voici chacune viendra promptement et légèrement. 27 Il n’y aura pas un d’eux qui soit las, ni qui bronche, ni qui sommeille, ni qui dorme, et la ceinture de leurs reins ne sera point déliée, et la courroie de leur soulier ne sera point rompue. 28 Leurs flèches seront aiguës, et tous leurs arcs tendus ; les cornes des pieds de leurs chevaux seront tout comme autant de cailloux, et les roues de leurs chariots comme un tourbillon. 29 Leur rugissement sera comme celui du vieux lion, ils rugiront comme des lionceaux ; ils bruiront, et raviront la proie ; ils l’emporteront, et il n’y aura personne qui la leur ôte. 30 En ce temps-là on mènera un bruit sur lui, semblable au bruit de la mer, et il regardera vers la terre, mais voici il y aura des ténèbres, et la calamité viendra avec la lumière ; il y aura des ténèbres au ciel sur elle.
