1 La parole que Jérémie, le prophète, adressa à Baruc, fils de Nérija, lorsqu'il écrivit dans un livre ces paroles, sous la dictée de Jérémie, la quatrième année de Jojakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda. Il dit:

2 Ainsi parle l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, sur toi, Baruc:

3 Tu dis: Malheur à moi! car l'Eternel ajoute le chagrin à ma douleur; je m'épuise en soupirant, et je ne trouve point de repos.

4 Dis-lui: Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Voici, ce que j'ai bâti, je le détruirai; ce que j'ai planté, je l'arracherai, savoir tout ce pays.

5 Et toi, rechercherais-tu de grandes choses? Ne les recherche pas! Car voici, je vais faire venir le malheur sur toute chair, dit l'Eternel; et je te donnerai ta vie pour butin, dans tous les lieux où tu iras.

1 The message that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch the son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, 2 "Yahweh, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: 3 ‘You said, "Woe is me now! For Yahweh has added sorrow to my pain! I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest."’

4 "You shall tell him, Yahweh says: ‘Behold, that which I have built, I will break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up; and this in the whole land. 5 Do you seek great things for yourself? Don’t seek them; for, behold, I will bring evil on all flesh,’ says Yahweh, ‘but I will let you escape with your life wherever you go.’"
