Álefe — 1 Como o Senhor, na sua ira,
cobriu de nuvens a filha de Sião!
Precipitou do céu à terra
a glória de Israel
e, no dia da sua ira,
não se lembrou
do estrado de seus pés.
Bete — 2 O Senhor devorou
todas as moradas de Jacó
e não teve piedade;
no seu furor, derrubou
as fortalezas da filha de Judá;
lançou por terra e profanou
o reino e os seus príncipes.
Guímel — 3 No furor da sua ira,
cortou toda a força de Israel;
retirou a sua mão direita
em face do inimigo.
Consumiu Jacó
como labareda de fogo
que devora tudo ao seu redor.
Dálete — 4 Entesou o seu arco,
como se fosse um inimigo;
firmou a sua mão direita,
como se fosse um adversário.
Destruiu tudo
o que era formoso à vista;
derramou o seu furor, como fogo,
sobre a tenda da filha de Sião.
Hê — 5 O Senhor se tornou
como inimigo,
devorando Israel;
devorou todos os seus palácios,
destruiu as suas fortalezas
e multiplicou na filha de Judá
o pranto e a lamentação.
Vau — 6 Demoliu com violência
o seu tabernáculo,
como se fosse uma horta;
destruiu o lugar
da sua congregação.
O Senhor, em Sião,
entregou ao esquecimento
as festas e o sábado
e, na indignação da sua ira,
rejeitou com desprezo
o rei e o sacerdote.
Zaine — 7 O Senhor rejeitou
o seu altar
e detestou o seu santuário.
Entregou nas mãos dos inimigos
os muros dos seus castelos;
eles deram gritos
na Casa do Senhor,
como se fosse dia de festa.
Hete — 8 O Senhor resolveu
destruir a muralha da filha de Sião;
estendeu o cordel
e não retirou
a sua mão destruidora.
Fez gemer a muralha e as paredes;
juntas enfraqueceram.
Tete — 9 Os seus portões
caíram por terra;
ele quebrou e despedaçou
as suas trancas.
O seu rei e os seus príncipes
estão entre as nações
onde já não vigora a lei;
os seus profetas não recebem
mais visões do Senhor.
Iode — 10 Os anciãos da filha de Sião
estão sentados no chão,
em silêncio;
lançam pó sobre a cabeça,
vestindo roupa feita
de pano de saco;
as virgens de Jerusalém
abaixam a cabeça até o chão.
Cafe — 11 Com lágrimas
se consumiram
os meus olhos,
a minha alma se agita;
o meu coração se derramou
de angústia
por causa da calamidade
da filha do meu povo,
porque crianças e bebês desmaiam
pelas ruas da cidade.
Lâmede — 12 Perguntam
às suas mães:
"O que temos para
comer e beber?",
ao mesmo tempo
em que desfalecem
como o ferido pelas ruas da cidade
ou quando dão o último suspiro
nos braços de sua mãe.
Mem — 13 O que posso lhe dizer?
A quem você se assemelha,
ó filha de Jerusalém?
A quem posso compará-la,
para lhe trazer consolo,
ó virgem filha de Sião?
Porque a sua calamidade
é tão grande como o mar;
quem poderá curá-la?
Num — 14 As visões que
os seus profetas
lhe anunciaram
eram falsas e enganosas.
Eles não expuseram
a maldade do que você fazia,
para restaurarem a sua sorte,
mas anunciaram visões falsas,
que a levaram ao cativeiro.
Sâmeque — 15 Todos os que passam
pelo caminho
zombam, batendo palmas,
vaiam e balançam a cabeça
diante da filha de Jerusalém.
Perguntam: "É esta a cidade
que chamavam de
Perfeição da Formosura,
a alegria de toda a terra?"
Pê — 16 Todos os seus inimigos
abrem a boca contra você,
vaiam, rangem os dentes e dizem:
"Nós acabamos com ela!
Certamente este é
o dia que esperávamos!
Conseguimos! Esse dia chegou!"
Aim — 17 O Senhor fez
o que tinha em vista;
cumpriu a ameaça que pronunciou
desde os dias da antiguidade.
Derrubou sem dó nem piedade;
deixou que os inimigos
se alegrassem
por causa de você
e exaltou o poder
dos seus adversários.
Tsadê — 18 O coração do povo
clama ao Senhor.
Ó muralha da filha de Sião,
que as suas lágrimas corram
como um ribeiro,
de dia e de noite!
Não descanse!
Que a menina de seus olhos
não pare de chorar!
Cofe — 19 Levante-se
e clame de noite,
no princípio das vigílias.
Derrame, como água,
o coração diante do Senhor;
levante a ele as mãos,
pela vida de seus filhinhos,
que desfalecem de fome
nas esquinas de todas as ruas.
Rexe — 20 Vê, ó Senhor, e considera
a quem trataste assim!
Será que as mulheres
deviam comer
o fruto de si mesmas,
as crianças que elas tanto amam?
Ou será que os sacerdotes
e profetas
deviam ser mortos
no santuário do Senhor?
Chim — 21 Os jovens e os velhos
jazem por terra pelas ruas;
as minhas virgens e os meus jovens
foram mortos à espada.
Tu os mataste no dia da tua ira;
fizeste matança
sem dó nem piedade.
Tau — 22 Convocaste de toda parte
terrores contra mim,
como se fosse um dia de festa;
não houve quem escapasse
ou ficasse com vida
no dia da ira do Senhor.
Os filhos que tive e criei,
o meu inimigo os consumiu.

1 How LORD has covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger! He has cast down the beauty of Israel from heaven to the earth, and has not remembered his footstool in the day of his anger.2 LORD has swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and has not pitied. In his wrath he has thrown down the strongholds of the daughter of Judah. He has brought them down to the ground. He has profaned the kingdom and the rulers th3 In fierce anger he has cut off all the horn of Israel. He has drawn back his right hand from before the enemy. And he has burned up Jacob like a flaming fire which devours round about.4 He has bent his bow like an enemy. He has stood with his right hand as an adversary, and has slain all who were pleasant to the eye. He has poured out his wrath like fire in the tent of the daughter of Zion.5 LORD has become as an enemy. He has swallowed up Israel. He has swallowed up all her palaces. He has destroyed his strongholds. And he has multiplied mourning and lamentation in the daughter of Judah.6 And he has taken away his tabernacle violently, as a garden. He has destroyed his place of assembly. LORD has caused solemn assembly and Sabbath to be forgotten in Zion. And in the indignation of his anger has despised the king and7 LORD has cast off his altar. He has abhorred his sanctuary. He has given up the walls of her palaces into the hand of the enemy. They have made a noise in the house of LORD, as in the day of a solemn assembly.8 LORD has purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion. He has stretched out the line. He has not withdrawn his hand from destroying. And he has made the rampart and wall to lament, they languish together.9 Her gates are sunk into the ground. He has destroyed and broken her bars. Her king and her rulers are among the nations where the law is not. Yea, her prophets find no vision from LORD.10 The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground. They keep silence. They have cast up dust upon their heads. They have girded themselves with sackcloth. The virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.11 My eyes fail with tears, my heart is troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because the young sons and the sucklings faint in the streets of the city.12 They say to their mothers, Where is grain and wine? when they faint as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul is poured out into their mothers' bosom.13 What shall I testify to thee? What shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? What shall I compare to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? For thy breach is great like the sea; who can heal thee?14 Thy prophets have seen FALSE and foolish visions for thee. And they have not uncovered thine iniquity, to bring back thy captivity, but have seen for thee FALSE oracles and causes of banishment.15 All who pass by clap their hands at thee. They hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, [saying], Is this the city that men called The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?16 All thine enemies have opened their mouth wide against thee. They hiss and gnash the teeth. They say, We have swallowed her up. Certainly this is the day that we looked for. We have found, we have seen it.17 LORD has done that which he purposed. He has fulfilled his word that he commanded in the days of old. He has thrown down, and has not pitied. And he has caused the enemy to rejoice over thee. He has exalted the horn of thine advers18 Their heart cried to LORD. O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night. Give thyself no respite. Let not the apple of thine eye cease.19 Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches. Pour out thy heart like water before the face of LORD. Lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young sons, who faint for hunger at the head of every street.20 See, O LORD, and behold to whom thou have done thus! Shall the women eat their fruit, the sons who are dandled in the hands? Shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of LORD?21 The youth and the old man lay on the ground in the streets. My virgins and my young men have fallen by the sword. Thou have slain them in the day of thine anger. Thou have slaughtered, [and] not pitied.22 Thou have called, as in the day of a solemn assembly, my terrors on every side. And there was none who escaped or remained in the day of LORD's anger. My enemy has consumed those whom I have dandled and brought up.
