1 Naqueles dias, quando outra vez se reuniu grande multidão, e não tendo o que comer, Jesus chamou os discípulos e lhes disse:

2 — Tenho compaixão desta gente, porque já faz três dias que eles estão comigo e não têm o que comer. 3 Se eu os mandar para casa em jejum, desfalecerão pelo caminho; e alguns deles vieram de longe.

4 Mas os discípulos lhe responderam:

— Como poderá alguém saciá-los de pão neste deserto?

5 Então Jesus perguntou:

— Quantos pães vocês têm?

Eles responderam:

— Sete.

6 Então mandou o povo assentar-se no chão. E, pegando os sete pães, partiu-os, após ter dado graças, e os deu aos seus discípulos, para que estes os distribuíssem, repartindo entre o povo. 7 Tinham também alguns peixinhos. E, abençoando-os, mandou que estes igualmente fossem distribuídos. 8 Comeram e se fartaram; e dos pedaços restantes recolheram sete cestos. 9 Eram cerca de quatro mil homens. Então Jesus os despediu. 10 Logo a seguir, tendo entrado no barco juntamente com os seus discípulos, foi para a região de Dalmanuta.

11 Os fariseus chegaram e começaram a discutir com Jesus. E, tentando-o, pediram-lhe um sinal vindo do céu. 12 Jesus, porém, arrancou do íntimo do seu espírito um gemido e disse:

— Por que esta geração pede um sinal? Em verdade lhes digo que nenhum sinal será dado a esta geração.

13 E, deixando-os, tornou a embarcar e foi para o outro lado.

14 Ora, os discípulos se esqueceram de levar pão e, no barco, não tinham consigo senão um só. 15 Jesus os preveniu, dizendo:

— Fiquem atentos e tomem cuidado com o fermento dos fariseus e com o fermento de Herodes.

16 E eles começaram a discutir entre si, dizendo:

— Ele diz isso porque não temos pão.

17 Jesus percebeu isso e perguntou:

— Por que vocês estão discutindo sobre o fato de não terem pão? Vocês ainda não percebem nem compreendem? Têm o coração endurecido? 18 Tendo olhos, não veem? E, tendo ouvidos, não ouvem? Não se lembram 19 de quando parti os cinco pães para os cinco mil, quantos cestos cheios de pedaços vocês recolheram?

Eles responderam:

— Doze!

20 — E de quando parti os sete pães para os quatro mil, quantos cestos cheios de pedaços vocês recolheram?

Responderam:

— Sete!

21 Ao que Jesus lhes disse:

— Vocês ainda não compreendem?

22 Então chegaram a Betsaida. E lhe trouxeram um cego e pediram a Jesus que tocasse nele. 23 Jesus, tomando o cego pela mão, levou-o para fora da aldeia. Então cuspiu nos olhos do homem e, impondo-lhe as mãos, perguntou:

— Você vê alguma coisa?

24 O homem, recuperando a visão, respondeu:

— Vejo pessoas, mas elas parecem árvores que andam.

25 Então Jesus novamente pôs as mãos sobre os olhos dele. E o homem, passando a ver claramente, ficou restabelecido; e distinguia tudo de modo perfeito. 26 E Jesus o mandou para casa, recomendando-lhe:

— Não entre na aldeia.

27 Então Jesus e os seus discípulos foram para as aldeias de Cesareia de Filipe. No caminho, perguntou-lhes:

— Quem os outros dizem que eu sou?

28 Os discípulos responderam:

— Uns dizem que é João Batista; outros dizem que é Elias; e ainda outros dizem que é um dos profetas.

29 Então Jesus perguntou:

— E vocês, quem dizem que eu sou?

Respondendo, Pedro lhe disse:

— O senhor é o Cristo.

30 Então Jesus os advertiu de que a ninguém dissessem tal coisa a seu respeito.

31 Então Jesus começou a ensinar-lhes que era necessário que o Filho do Homem sofresse muitas coisas, fosse rejeitado pelos anciãos, pelos principais sacerdotes e pelos escribas, fosse morto e que, depois de três dias, ressuscitasse. 32 E isto ele expunha claramente. Então Pedro, chamando-o à parte, começou a repreendê-lo. 33 Mas Jesus, voltando-se e vendo os seus discípulos, repreendeu Pedro e disse:

— Saia da minha frente, Satanás! Porque você não leva em consideração as coisas de Deus, e sim as dos homens.

34 Então, convocando a multidão e juntamente os seus discípulos, Jesus lhes disse:

— Se alguém quer vir após mim, negue a si mesmo, tome a sua cruz e siga-me. 35 Pois quem quiser salvar a sua vida a perderá; e quem perder a vida por minha causa e por causa do evangelho, esse a salvará. 36 De que adianta uma pessoa ganhar o mundo inteiro e perder a sua alma? 37 Que daria uma pessoa em troca de sua alma? 38 Pois quem, nesta geração adúltera e pecadora, se envergonhar de mim e das minhas palavras, também o Filho do Homem se envergonhará dele, quando vier na glória do seu Pai com os santos anjos.

1 In those days, the multitude being very great, and not having what they might eat, Jesus having summoned his disciples, he says to them,2 I feel compassion toward the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and do not have what they might eat.3 And if I send them away without food to their house, they will faint on the way, for some of them come from afar.4 And his disciples answered him, From where will anyone be able to fill these men of loaves here in a desolate place?5 And he questioned them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.6 And he commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. And after taking the seven loaves, having given thanks, he broke in pieces, and gave to his disciples so that they might place before them. And they place before the crowd.7 And they had a few small fishes. And having blessed them, he said to also place before them.8 And they ate and were filled. And they took up seven hampers of surplus fragments.9 And those who ate were about four thousand, and he sent them away.10 And straightaway having entered into the boat with his disciples, he came into the parts of Dalmanutha.11 And the Pharisees came forth, and began to dispute with him, seeking from him a sign from the sky, testing him.12 And having sighed deeply in his spirit, he says, Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly I am telling you, if a sign will be given to this generation.13 And having left them, having entered again into a boat, he departed to the other side.14 And they forgot to take loaves, and they did not have with them in the boat except one loaf.15 And he commanded them, saying, Take heed, watch for the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.16 And they deliberated among each other, saying, We have no loaves.17 And knowing it Jesus says to them, Why do ye deliberate because ye have no loaves? Do ye not yet perceive nor understand? Have ye your heart still hardened?18 Having eyes, ye see not, and having ears, ye hear not? And do ye not remember?19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did ye take up? They say to him, Twelve.20 And when the seven for the four thousand, how many hampers full of fragments did ye take up? And they said, Seven.21 And he said to them, How do ye not understand?22 And he comes to Bethsaida, and they bring a blind man to him, and call for him so that he might touch him.23 And having taken the hand of the blind man, he led him outside of the village. And having spat on his eyes, having laid his hands upon him, he questioned him if he sees anything?24 And having looked up, he said, The men that I see, I see as trees walking.25 Then again he put his hands upon his eyes, and made him look up. And he was restored, and saw all men clearly.26 And he sent him away to his house, saying, Thou may neither go into the village, nor may tell any man in the village.27 And Jesus went forth, and his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he questioned his disciples, saying to them, Who do men say that I am?28 And they answered, saying, John the immerser, and others, Elijah, but others, one of the prophets.29 And he says to them, But who do ye say that I am? And having answered, Peter says to him, Thou are the Christ.30 And he chided them that they should tell no man about him.31 And he began to teach them that it was necessary for the Son of man to suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and the chief priests, and the scholars, and be killed, and after three days to rise.32 And he spoke the matter openly. And having taken him aside, Peter began to rebuke him.33 But he, having turned around, and having looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Go thee behind me, Satan, because thou think not the things of God, but the things of men.34 And having called in the multitude with his disciples, he said to them, Whoever wants to follow behind me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life because of me and the good-news, this man will save it.36 For what will it profit a man if he should gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?38 For whoever may be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy agents.
