1 Um dia, Jônatas, filho de Saul, disse ao seu jovem escudeiro:

— Venha, vamos até a guarnição dos filisteus, que está do outro lado.

Porém ele não contou isso a seu pai.

2 Saul se encontrava na extremidade de Gibeá, debaixo da romãzeira em Migrom. E o povo que estava com ele eram cerca de seiscentos homens. 3 Aías, filho de Aitube, irmão de Icabô, filho de Fineias, filho de Eli, sacerdote do Senhor em Siló, trazia a estola sacerdotal. O povo não sabia que Jônatas tinha ido.

4 Entre os desfiladeiros pelos quais Jônatas procurava passar à guarnição dos filisteus, havia um penhasco íngreme de um lado, e outro penhasco íngreme do outro lado. Um se chamava Bozez; o outro, Sené. 5 Um deles se erguia ao norte, diante de Micmás; o outro, ao sul, diante de Geba.

6 Jônatas disse ao seu escudeiro:

— Venha, vamos até a guarnição desses incircuncisos. Talvez o Senhor nos ajude, porque nada pode impedir o Senhor de livrar, seja com muitos ou com poucos.

7 Então o escudeiro disse:

— Faça tudo o que estiver em seu coração. Eu estou com você e farei o que você decidir.

8 Jônatas respondeu:

— Então vamos atravessar na direção daqueles homens e deixar que eles nos vejam. 9 Se nos disserem assim: "Fiquem parados até que cheguemos perto de vocês", então ficaremos onde estamos e não subiremos a eles. 10 Porém se disserem: "Subam até aqui", então subiremos, pois o Senhor os entregou em nossas mãos. Isto nos servirá de sinal.

11 Quando os dois se deixaram ver pela guarnição dos filisteus, estes disseram:

— Eis que os hebreus estão saindo dos buracos onde estavam escondidos.

12 Os homens da guarnição disseram a Jônatas e ao seu escudeiro:

— Subam até aqui e nós daremos uma lição em vocês.

Então Jônatas disse ao escudeiro:

— Venha atrás de mim, porque o Senhor os entregou nas mãos de Israel.

13 Então Jônatas subiu engatinhando, e o seu escudeiro foi atrás. Os filisteus caíram diante de Jônatas, e o seu escudeiro os matava atrás dele. 14 Neste primeiro ataque, Jônatas e o seu escudeiro mataram perto de vinte homens, numa pequena área de terra. 15 Houve grande espanto no arraial, no campo e entre todo o povo. Também a guarnição e os saqueadores tremeram, e até a terra tremeu. Foi um terror causado por Deus.

16 Em Gibeá de Benjamim, as sentinelas de Saul olharam e eis que a multidão dos filisteus se dispersava, correndo uns para cá, outros para lá. 17 Então Saul disse ao povo que estava com ele:

— Contem os soldados e vejam quem é que saiu do acampamento.

Contaram, e eis que nem Jônatas nem o seu escudeiro estavam ali. 18 Saul disse a Aías:

— Traga aqui a arca de Deus.

Isso porque, naquele dia, ela estava com os filhos de Israel. 19 Enquanto Saul falava ao sacerdote, o alvoroço que havia no arraial dos filisteus aumentava cada vez mais. Então Saul disse ao sacerdote:

— Desista de trazer a arca.

20 Saul e todo o povo que estava com ele se reuniram e foram à batalha. E eis que a espada de um era contra o outro, e houve grande tumulto. 21 Também os hebreus que anteriormente haviam estado com os filisteus e que tinham ido com eles ao arraial, também estes se juntaram com os israelitas que estavam com Saul e Jônatas. 22 Quando todos os homens de Israel que estavam escondidos na região montanhosa de Efraim ouviram que os filisteus estavam fugindo, também eles entraram na batalha e os perseguiram. 23 Assim o Senhor livrou Israel naquele dia. E a batalha passou além de Bete-Áven.

24 Naquele dia os homens de Israel estavam angustiados, porque Saul havia levado o povo a fazer um juramento, dizendo:

— Maldito o homem que comer algo antes de anoitecer, antes de eu me vingar dos meus inimigos.

Por isso todo o povo se absteve de comer naquele dia. 25 Todo o povo chegou a um bosque onde havia mel no chão. 26 Quando o povo entrou no bosque, eis que o mel estava escorrendo. Mas ninguém provou do mel, porque o povo estava com medo do juramento. 27 Jônatas, porém, não sabia que o pai havia levado o povo a fazer aquele juramento. Por isso, estendeu a ponta da vara que tinha na mão, e a molhou no favo de mel. Quando comeu, os seus olhos voltaram a brilhar. 28 Então alguém do meio do povo disse:

— O seu pai levou o povo a jurar solenemente, dizendo: "Maldito o homem que comer algo no dia de hoje." Por isso o povo está exausto.

29 Então Jônatas disse:

— Meu pai trouxe desastre sobre a terra. Vejam como os meus olhos brilham por ter eu provado um pouco deste mel. 30 Teria sido muito melhor se hoje o povo tivesse comido livremente do que encontrou entre os despojos de seus inimigos. A derrota dos filisteus teria sido bem maior!

31 Naquele dia derrotaram os filisteus, desde Micmás até Aijalom. O povo estava muito exausto. 32 Então, lançando-se sobre o despojo, pegaram ovelhas, bois e bezerros, e os mataram no chão, e comeram a carne com sangue. 33 Foram contar isto a Saul, dizendo:

— Eis que o povo está pecando contra o Senhor, porque comem a carne com sangue.

Saul gritou:

— Traidores! Rolem para aqui uma grande pedra.

34 E Saul disse mais:

— Espalhem-se entre o povo e digam a eles que cada um me traga o seu boi, a sua ovelha, e que os matem aqui, e então comam. E que não pequem contra o Senhor, comendo carne com sangue.

Então todo o povo trouxe, de noite, cada um o seu boi e o matou ali. 35 E Saul edificou um altar ao Senhor. Foi o primeiro altar que lhe edificou.

36 Então Saul disse:

— Vamos descer esta noite no encalço dos filisteus. Vamos saqueá-los até o raiar do dia, e não deixemos que fique nem sequer um deles.

Eles responderam:

— Faça como achar melhor.

37 Mas o sacerdote disse:

— Vamos primeiro nos aproximar de Deus.

Então Saul consultou a Deus, dizendo:

— Devo descer no encalço dos filisteus? Tu os entregarás nas mãos de Israel?

Porém naquele dia Deus não lhe respondeu. 38 Então Saul disse:

— Venham cá, todos os chefes do povo, e informem-se e descubram qual é o pecado que foi cometido hoje. 39 Porque tão certo como vive o Senhor, que salva Israel, ainda que o meu filho Jônatas seja o culpado, certamente morrerá.

Porém ninguém de todo o povo lhe respondeu. 40 Então Saul disse a todo o Israel:

— Fiquem vocês de um lado, e eu e o meu filho Jônatas ficaremos do outro.

E o povo disse a Saul:

— Faça como achar melhor.

41 Então Saul falou ao Senhor, Deus de Israel:

— Mostra a verdade.

Então Jônatas e Saul foram indicados por sorteio, e o povo saiu livre. 42 Então Saul disse:

— Lancem a sorte entre mim e Jônatas, meu filho.

E Jônatas foi indicado.

43 Então Saul disse a Jônatas:

— Diga-me o que foi que você fez.

E Jônatas respondeu:

— Eu apenas provei um pouco de mel com a ponta da vara que tinha na mão. Eis-me aqui; estou pronto para morrer.

44 Então Saul disse:

— Que Deus me castigue se você não for morto, Jônatas.

45 Porém o povo disse a Saul:

— Como é que Jônatas pode ser morto, ele que efetuou tamanha salvação em Israel? Nada disso! Tão certo como vive o Senhor, nem um de seus cabelos cairá no chão! Pois foi com a ajuda de Deus que ele fez isso, hoje.

Assim o povo salvou Jônatas, para que não morresse. 46 E Saul deixou de perseguir os filisteus, e estes voltaram para a sua terra.

47 Quando assumiu o reinado de Israel, Saul lutou contra todos os seus inimigos ao redor: contra Moabe, os filhos de Amom e Edom; contra os reis de Zobá e os filisteus; e, para onde quer que se voltava, era vitorioso. 48 Lutou com coragem, derrotando os amalequitas e libertando Israel das mãos dos que o saqueavam.

49 Os filhos de Saul eram Jônatas, Isvi e Malquisua. Os nomes de suas duas filhas eram Merabe, a mais velha, e Mical, a mais nova. 50 A mulher de Saul se chamava Ainoã, filha de Aimaás. O nome do general do seu exército era Abner, filho de Ner, tio de Saul. 51 Quis era pai de Saul; e Ner, pai de Abner, era filho de Abiel.

52 Durante todo o reinado de Saul, houve forte guerra contra os filisteus. Por isso, sempre que via um homem forte e valente, Saul o agregava a si.

1 Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who carried his armor: »Come and let us go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side.« He did not tell his father.2 Saul stayed on the edge of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. There were about six hundred men with him.3 Ahiah son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, son of Phinehas, son of Eli, Jehovah’s priest in Shiloh, who was wearing an ephod were with him. The people did not know that Jonathan was gone.4 Johathan tried to go over to the Philistines garrison between the passes. There was a rocky crag on each side. The name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other crag was Seneh.5 One cliff was on the north side of the pass facing Michmash. The other was on the south side facing Geba.6 Jonathan said to the young man: »Let us cross over to the camp of those heathen Philistines. Maybe Jehovah will help us. If he does, nothing can keep him from giving us the victory no matter how few of us there are.«7 His armor bearer answered him: »Do whatever you have in mind. Go ahead! I agree with you.«8 »We will do this,« Jonathan said. »We will go across so they can see us.9 »If they agree to come to us down the hill and fight where we are, then we will not climb up to their camp.10 »But we will go to them if they tell us to come up the hill and fight. That will mean Jehovah will help us win.«11 So they let the Philistines see them. The Philistines said: »Some Hebrews are coming out of the holes they were hiding in!«12 They called out to Jonathan and the young man: »Come up here! We have something to tell you!« Jonathan said to the young man: »Follow me, for Jehovah gives Israel victory over them.«13 Jonathan climbed out of the pass on his hands and knees. The young man followed him. Jonathan attacked the Philistines and knocked them down. The young man killed them.14 In that first slaughter Jonathan and the young man killed about twenty men in an area of about half an acre.15 There was panic among the army in the field. All the troops in the military post trembled with fear. The raiding party also trembled in fear. The earth shook, and there was a panic sent from God.16 Saul’s watchmen at Gibeah of Benjamin could see the crowd in the Philistine camp dispersing in all directions.17 »Call the roll,« Saul told the troops who were with him, »See who has left our camp.« They looked and found that Jonathan and his armor bearer were not there.18 Then Saul said to Ahijah: »Bring the Ark of God here.« At that time it was with the Israelites.19 While Saul was talking to the priest, the confusion in the Philistine camp grew worse. Then Saul said to the priest: »Remove your hand.«20 Saul and all the people with him came together and went forward to the battle. Every man’s sword was turned against the man at his side. There was a very great noise.21 The Hebrews who had been with the Philistines for some time went to their camp. They joined the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.22 All the men of Israel who had taken cover in the mountains of Ephraim, hearing that the Philistines had been put to flight chased them and attacked them.23 Jehovah made Israel safe that day. The battle shifted to Beth-aven.24 And all the people were with Saul. There were about twenty thousand men. The fight was general through all the mountains of Ephraim. Saul made a great error that day. He put the people under an oath, saying: »Let that man be cursed who eats any food before evening. I have taken vengeance on my enemies.« So the people did not eat.25 All the people came to the forest. There was honey on the ground. The bees had gone from it.26 When the people entered the woods, the honey was flowing. But no one put his hand to his mouth. The people were afraid of violating their oath.27 Jonathan had not heard that his father forced the people to take an oath. So he stretched out the tip of the staff he had in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb. When he put it to his mouth his eyes lit up.28 Then one of the people told him: »Your father forced the people to take a solemn oath, saying: ‘Cursed is anyone who eats food today.’« That is why the people were exhausted.29 Jonathan answered: »My father brought trouble to the country. See how my eyes lit up when I tasted a little of this honey?30 »If only the people had eaten some of the enemies’ food they found today. We would have killed more Philistines.«31 That day they struck down the Philistines from Michmash to Aijalon, but the people were thoroughly exhausted.32 They grabbed the food they had captured from the Philistines and started eating. They even killed sheep and cows and calves right on the ground and ate the meat without draining the blood.33 Someone told Saul: »The army is disobeying Jehovah by eating meat before the blood drains out.« »You are right,« Saul answered. »They are being unfaithful to Jehovah! Hurry! Roll a big rock over here.«34 »Then tell everyone in camp to bring their cattle and lambs to me. They can kill the animals on this rock and then eat the meat. That way no one will disobey Jehovah by eating meat with blood still in it.« That night the people brought their cattle over to the big rock and killed them there.35 It was the first altar Saul had built for offering sacrifices to Jehovah.36 Saul said: »Let us attack the Philistines again while it is still dark. We can fight them all night. Let us kill them and take everything they own!« The people answered: »We will do whatever you want.« Ahijah the priest said: »Wait! Let us ask God what we should do.«37 Saul asked God: »Should I attack the Philistines? Will you help us win?« This time God did not answer.38 Saul called his army officers together and said: »We have to find out what sin has kept God from answering.39 »I promise by the living Jehovah, who gives Israel victory, that the guilty one will be put to death, even if he is my son Jonathan.« But no one said anything.40 Then Saul said to them: »All of you stand over there. Jonathan and I will stand over here.« »Do whatever you think best,« they answered.41 Saul said to Jehovah the God of Israel, give a perfect lot. Jonathan and Samuel were taken, but the people escaped.42 Then Saul said: »Cast lots to decide between my son Jonathan and me.« And Jonathan was indicated.43 Then Saul asked Jonathan: »What have you done?« Jonathan answered: »I ate a little honey with the stick I was holding. Here I am. I am ready to die.«44 Saul said: »May God strike me dead if you are not put to death!«45 But the people said to Saul: »Will Jonathan, who won this great victory for Israel, be put to death?« »No! We promise by the living Jehovah that he will not lose even a hair from his head. What he did today was done with God’s help.« So the people saved Jonathan from being put to death.46 After that, Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines. The Philistines went back to their own territory.47 After Saul became king of Israel, he fought all his enemies everywhere: the people of Moab, of Ammon, and of Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. He was victorious wherever he fought.48 He fought heroically and defeated even the people of Amalek. He saved the Israelites from all attacks.49 Saul’s sons were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua. The names of his two daughters were Merab the firstborn daughter and Michal the younger daughter.50 The name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of his army was Abner son of Saul’s uncle Ner.51 Kish, Saul’s father and Ner, Abner’s father, were the sons of Abiel.52 There was intense warfare with the Philistines as long as Saul lived. Whenever any warrior or any skilled fighting man came to Saul’s attention, Saul would enlist him in the army.
