1 Digo, porém, o seguinte: durante o tempo em que o herdeiro é menor de idade, em nada difere de um escravo, mesmo sendo senhor de tudo. 2 Mas está sob tutores e curadores até o tempo predeterminado pelo pai. 3 Assim, também nós, quando éramos menores, estávamos escravizados aos rudimentos do mundo. 4 Mas, quando chegou a plenitude do tempo, Deus enviou o seu Filho, nascido de mulher, nascido sob a lei, 5 para resgatar os que estavam sob a lei, a fim de que recebêssemos a adoção de filhos. 6 E, porque vocês são filhos, Deus enviou o Espírito de seu Filho ao nosso coração, e esse Espírito clama: "Aba, Pai!" 7 Assim, você já não é mais escravo, porém filho; e, sendo filho, também é herdeiro por Deus.

8 Mas, no passado, quando não conheciam a Deus, vocês eram escravos de deuses que, por natureza, não são deuses. 9 Mas agora que vocês conhecem a Deus, ou melhor, agora que vocês são conhecidos por Deus, como é que estão voltando outra vez aos rudimentos fracos e pobres, aos quais de novo querem servir como escravos? 10 Vocês guardam dias, meses, tempos e anos. 11 Receio que o meu trabalho por vocês tenha sido em vão.

12 Sejam como eu sou, porque também eu sou como vocês. Isto é o que lhes peço, irmãos. Vocês não me ofenderam em nada. 13 E vocês sabem que eu lhes preguei o evangelho a primeira vez por causa de uma enfermidade física. 14 E, por mais que a minha enfermidade na carne lhes tenha sido uma provação, vocês não me trataram com desprezo nem desgosto. Pelo contrário, me receberam como anjo de Deus, como o próprio Cristo Jesus. 15 O que aconteceu com a felicidade que vocês tinham? Porque posso dar testemunho de que, se fosse possível, vocês teriam arrancado os próprios olhos para me dar! 16 Será que, por dizer a verdade, me tornei inimigo de vocês?

17 Esses que se mostram tão zelosos em relação a vocês não estão sendo sinceros. O que eles querem é afastar vocês de mim, para que vocês se interessem por eles. 18 É bom ser sempre zeloso pelo bem e não apenas quando estou com vocês, 19 meus filhos, por quem, de novo, estou sofrendo as dores de parto, até que Cristo seja formado em vocês. 20 Bem que eu gostaria de estar agora aí com vocês e falar em outro tom de voz, porque estou perplexo com vocês.

21 Digam-me vocês, os que querem estar sob a lei: será que vocês não ouvem o que a lei diz? 22 Pois está escrito que Abraão teve dois filhos: um da mulher escrava e outro da mulher livre. 23 O filho da escrava nasceu segundo a carne; o filho da mulher livre nasceu mediante a promessa. 24 Estas coisas são alegóricas, porque essas mulheres são duas alianças. Uma se refere ao monte Sinai, que gera para a escravidão; esta é Agar. 25 Ora, Agar é o monte Sinai, na Arábia, e corresponde à Jerusalém atual, que está em escravidão com os seus filhos. 26 Mas a Jerusalém lá de cima é livre e ela é a nossa mãe. 27 Porque está escrito:

"Alegre-se, ó estéril,

você que não dá à luz;

exulte e grite,

você que não sente

dores de parto;

porque os filhos

da mulher abandonada

são mais numerosos do que

os filhos da que tem marido."

28 Mas vocês, irmãos, são filhos da promessa, como Isaque. 29 Como, porém, no passado, aquele que nasceu segundo a carne perseguia o que nasceu segundo o Espírito, assim também acontece agora. 30 Mas o que diz a Escritura? Ela diz: "Mande embora a escrava e seu filho, porque de modo nenhum o filho da escrava será herdeiro com o filho da mulher livre." 31 Portanto, irmãos, somos filhos não da escrava, mas da livre.

1 But I say:for as long a time as, the heir, is an infant, he differeth, nothing, from a servant, though, lord of all,

2 But is, under guardians, and stewards, until the fore-appointed of the father:

3 So also, we, when we were infants, under the elementary principles of the world, were held in servitude;

4 But, when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, who came to be of a woman, who came to be under law,

5 That, them who were under law, he might redeem, that, the sonship, we might duly receive;

6 And, because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, exclaiming, Abba! Oh Father!

7 So that, no longer, art thou a servant, but a son; and, if a son, an heir also, through God.

8 But, at that timenot knowing God, ye were in servitude unto them who, by nature, are not Gods;

9 Whereas, now, having acknowledged God,or rather, having been acknowledged by God, how turn ye back again unto the weak and beggarly elementary principles, unto which, over again, ye are wishing, to come into servitude?

10 Days, ye do narrowly observer, and months, and seasons, and years:

11 I am afraid of youlest by any means, in vain, I should have toiled for you!

12 Become ye as, I, because, I also, as, ye,brethren, I entreat you. Not at all, have ye wronged me.

13 Howbeit ye know that, by reason of a weakness of the flesh, I myself announced the glad-message unto you, formerly;

14 And, your trial, in my flesh, ye despised not, neither spat ye , but, as a messenger of God, ye welcomed meas Christ Jesus.

15 Where, then, is the happiness ye accounted yours? For I bear you witnessthat, if possible, your eyes, ye would have dug out, and given unto me.

16 So then, your enemy, have I become, by dealing truthfully with you?

17 They shew a zeal for you, not honourably, but wish, to shut you out, in order that ye may be zealous for, them.

18 Howbeit it is, honourable, to show zeal in what is honourable at all times, and not only when I am present with you;

19 My dear children! for whom I, again, am in birth-pains, until Christ be formed within you;

20 I could wish, however, to be present with you, even now, and to change my voice,because I am perplexed regarding you.

21 Tell me! ye who, under law, are wishing to be: The law, do ye not hear?

22 For it is written, that, Abraham, had two sonsone by the bondmaid, and one by the free woman;

23 But, he that was of the bondmaid, after the flesh, had been born, whereas, he that was of the free woman, through means of a promise.

24 Which things, indeed, may bear another meaning; for, the same, are two covenants,one, indeed, from Mount Sinai, into bondage, bringing forth, the which is Hagar,

25 And, the Hagar, is Mount Sinai, in Arabia,she answereth, however, unto the present Jerusalem, for she is in bondage with her children;

26 But, the Jerusalem above, is free,the which is our mother;

27 For it is writtenBe gladdened, O barren one! that wast not giving birth, break forth and shout, thou that wast not in birth-pains,because, more, are the children of the deserted one, than of her that had the husband.

28 And, we, brethren, after the manner of Isaac, are children of a promise.

29 But, just as, then, he that after the manner of the flesh had been born, did persecute him who after the manner of the Spirit, thus, also now.

30 But, what saith the scripture? Cast out the serving woman and her son; for in nowise shall the son of the serving woman inherit with the son of the free.

31 Wherefore, brethren, we are not children of a serving woman, but of the free:
