1 Passadas estas coisas, disseram a José:

— Seu pai está doente.

Então José tomou consigo seus dois filhos, Manassés e Efraim. 2 E avisaram a Jacó:

— Eis que o seu filho José vem visitá-lo.

Israel fez um esforço e se sentou na cama. 3 Então Jacó disse a José:

— O Deus Todo-Poderoso me apareceu na cidade de Luz, na terra de Canaã, me abençoou 4 e me disse: "Eis que eu o farei fecundo e o multiplicarei. De você farei uma multidão de povos e à sua descendência darei esta terra como propriedade perpétua." 5 E agora os seus dois filhos, que lhe nasceram na terra do Egito antes que eu viesse para junto de você aqui no Egito, são meus. Efraim e Manassés serão meus, assim como Rúben e Simeão são meus. 6 Mas os filhos que você gerar depois deles serão seus; segundo o nome de um de seus irmãos serão chamados na sua herança. 7 Quando eu vinha de Padã, para minha tristeza morreu Raquel na terra de Canaã, no caminho, a pouca distância de Efrata; eu a sepultei ali no caminho de Efrata, que é Belém.

8 Quando Israel viu os filhos de José, perguntou:

— Quem são estes?

9 José respondeu a seu pai:

— São meus filhos, que Deus me deu aqui.

Israel disse:

— Traga-os para perto de mim, para que eu os abençoe.

10 Os olhos de Israel já estavam fracos por causa da velhice, de modo que não podia ver bem. Por isso José levou os filhos para perto dele; e ele os beijou e os abraçou.

11 Então Israel disse a José:

— Eu não esperava ver o seu rosto outra vez; e eis que Deus me permitiu ver também os seus filhos.

12 E José, tirando-os dentre os joelhos de seu pai, se prostrou com o rosto em terra, diante dele. 13 Depois José pegou os dois filhos e os colocou diante do pai. Pegou Efraim com a mão direita, para que ficasse à esquerda de Israel, e Manassés com a mão esquerda, para que ficasse à direita de Israel. 14 Mas Israel estendeu a mão direita e a pôs sobre a cabeça de Efraim, que era o mais novo, e pôs a mão esquerda sobre a cabeça de Manassés, cruzando assim as mãos, mesmo sendo Manassés o primogênito. 15 E Israel abençoou José, dizendo:

— O Deus em cuja presença andaram meus pais Abraão e Isaque, o Deus que tem sido o meu pastor durante a minha vida até este dia, 16 o Anjo que me tem livrado de todo mal, abençoe estes meninos! Que por meio deles seja lembrado o meu nome e o nome de meus pais Abraão e Isaque! Que cresçam e se tornem uma multidão sobre a terra.

17 José viu que seu pai havia posto a mão direita sobre a cabeça de Efraim e isto não lhe agradou. Pegou a mão de seu pai para mudá-la da cabeça de Efraim para a cabeça de Manassés. 18 E José disse ao pai:

— Não assim, meu pai, pois o primogênito é este; ponha a mão direita sobre a cabeça dele.

19 Mas seu pai recusou e disse:

— Eu sei, meu filho, eu sei. Ele também será um povo, também ele será grande. Mas o seu irmão menor será maior do que ele, e a sua descendência será uma multidão de nações.

20 Assim, os abençoou naquele dia, declarando:

— Por vocês Israel abençoará, dizendo: "Deus faça com você como fez com Efraim e com Manassés."

E assim Israel pôs Efraim antes de Manassés. 21 Depois Israel disse a José:

— Eis que estou morrendo, mas Deus estará com vocês e os fará voltar à terra de seus pais. 22 Dou a você uma parte a mais que a seus irmãos, um declive montanhoso, o qual tomei das mãos dos amorreus com a minha espada e com o meu arco.

1 After these things, someone said to Joseph, "Behold, your father is sick." He took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. 2 Someone told Jacob, and said, "Behold, your son Joseph comes to you," and Israel strengthened himself, and sat on the bed. 3 Jacob said to Joseph, "God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me, 4 and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful, and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your offspring after you for an everlasting possession.’ 5 Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you into Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh, even as Reuben and Simeon, will be mine. 6 Your offspring, whom you become the father of after them, will be yours. They will be called after the name of their brothers in their inheritance. 7 As for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died beside me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance to come to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (also called Bethlehem)."

8 Israel saw Joseph’s sons, and said, "Who are these?"

9 Joseph said to his father, "They are my sons, whom God has given me here."

He said, "Please bring them to me, and I will bless them." 10 Now the eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he couldn’t see well. Joseph brought them near to him; and he kissed them, and embraced them. 11 Israel said to Joseph, "I didn’t think I would see your face, and behold, God has let me see your offspring also." 12 Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. 13 Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near to him. 14 Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it on Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the firstborn. 15 He blessed Joseph, and said,

"The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,

the God who has fed me all my life long to this day,

16 the angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads,

and let my name be named on them,

and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac.

Let them grow into a multitude upon the earth."

17 When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him. He held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 Joseph said to his father, "Not so, my father, for this is the firstborn. Put your right hand on his head."

19 His father refused, and said, "I know, my son, I know. He also will become a people, and he also will be great. However, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his offspring will become a multitude of nations." 20 He blessed them that day, saying, "Israel will bless in you, saying, ‘God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh’" He set Ephraim before Manasseh. 21 Israel said to Joseph, "Behold, I am dying, but God will be with you, and bring you again to the land of your fathers. 22 Moreover I have given to you one portion above your brothers, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow."
