1 Kings 11

Solomon’s Wives

1 King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. 2 They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, "You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods." Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. 3 He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. 4 As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been. 5 He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites. 6 So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord; he did not follow the Lord completely, as David his father had done.

7 On a hill east of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable god of Moab, and for Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites. 8 He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods.

9 The Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. 10 Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the Lord’s command. 11 So the Lord said to Solomon, "Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates. 12 Nevertheless, for the sake of David your father, I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom from him, but will give him one tribe for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen."

Solomon’s Adversaries

14 Then the Lord raised up against Solomon an adversary, Hadad the Edomite, from the royal line of Edom. 15 Earlier when David was fighting with Edom, Joab the commander of the army, who had gone up to bury the dead, had struck down all the men in Edom. 16 Joab and all the Israelites stayed there for six months, until they had destroyed all the men in Edom. 17 But Hadad, still only a boy, fled to Egypt with some Edomite officials who had served his father. 18 They set out from Midian and went to Paran. Then taking people from Paran with them, they went to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave Hadad a house and land and provided him with food.

19 Pharaoh was so pleased with Hadad that he gave him a sister of his own wife, Queen Tahpenes, in marriage. 20 The sister of Tahpenes bore him a son named Genubath, whom Tahpenes brought up in the royal palace. There Genubath lived with Pharaoh’s own children.

21 While he was in Egypt, Hadad heard that David rested with his ancestors and that Joab the commander of the army was also dead. Then Hadad said to Pharaoh, "Let me go, that I may return to my own country."

22 "What have you lacked here that you want to go back to your own country?" Pharaoh asked.

"Nothing," Hadad replied, "but do let me go!"

23 And God raised up against Solomon another adversary, Rezon son of Eliada, who had fled from his master, Hadadezer king of Zobah. 24 When David destroyed Zobah’s army, Rezon gathered a band of men around him and became their leader; they went to Damascus, where they settled and took control. 25 Rezon was Israel’s adversary as long as Solomon lived, adding to the trouble caused by Hadad. So Rezon ruled in Aram and was hostile toward Israel.

Jeroboam Rebels Against Solomon

26 Also, Jeroboam son of Nebat rebelled against the king. He was one of Solomon’s officials, an Ephraimite from Zeredah, and his mother was a widow named Zeruah.

27 Here is the account of how he rebelled against the king: Solomon had built the terraces*11:27 Or the Millo and had filled in the gap in the wall of the city of David his father. 28 Now Jeroboam was a man of standing, and when Solomon saw how well the young man did his work, he put him in charge of the whole labor force of the tribes of Joseph.

29 About that time Jeroboam was going out of Jerusalem, and Ahijah the prophet of Shiloh met him on the way, wearing a new cloak. The two of them were alone out in the country, 30 and Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces. 31 Then he said to Jeroboam, "Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘See, I am going to tear the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes. 32 But for the sake of my servant David and the city of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, he will have one tribe. 33 I will do this because they have*11:33 Hebrew; Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac because he has forsaken me and worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Molek the god of the Ammonites, and have not walked in obedience to me, nor done what is right in my eyes, nor kept my decrees and laws as David, Solomon’s father, did.

34 " ‘But I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon’s hand; I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David my servant, whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and decrees. 35 I will take the kingdom from his son’s hands and give you ten tribes. 36 I will give one tribe to his son so that David my servant may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city where I chose to put my Name. 37 However, as for you, I will take you, and you will rule over all that your heart desires; you will be king over Israel. 38 If you do whatever I command you and walk in obedience to me and do what is right in my eyes by obeying my decrees and commands, as David my servant did, I will be with you. I will build you a dynasty as enduring as the one I built for David and will give Israel to you. 39 I will humble David’s descendants because of this, but not forever.’ "

40 Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam fled to Egypt, to Shishak the king, and stayed there until Solomon’s death.

Solomon’s Death

41 As for the other events of Solomon’s reign—all he did and the wisdom he displayed—are they not written in the book of the annals of Solomon? 42 Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years. 43 Then he rested with his ancestors and was buried in the city of David his father. And Rehoboam his son succeeded him as king.

As mulheres de Salomão

No entanto, Salomão apegou-se amorosamente a elas. 3 Casou-se com setecentas princesas e trezentas concubinas, e as suas mulheres o levaram a desviar-se. 4 À medida que Salomão foi envelhecendo, as suas mulheres o induziram a voltar-se para outros deuses, e o seu coração já não era totalmente dedicado ao Senhor, o seu Deus, como fora o coração de Davi, o seu pai. 5 Ele seguiu Astarote, a deusa dos sidônios, e Moloque, o deus repugnante dos amonitas. 6 Dessa forma, Salomão fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor; não seguiu completamente o Senhor, como Davi, o seu pai.

7 No monte que fica a leste de Jerusalém, Salomão construiu um santuário local para Camos, o deus repugnante de Moabe, e para Moloque, o deus repugnante dos amonitas. 8 Também fez santuários locais para os deuses de todas as suas outras mulheres estrangeiras, que queimavam incenso e ofereciam sacrifícios a eles.

9 O Senhor irou-se contra Salomão, pois o seu coração havia se desviado do Senhor, o Deus de Israel, que lhe havia aparecido duas vezes. 10 Embora ele tivesse proibido Salomão de seguir outros deuses, Salomão não obedeceu ao Senhor. 11 Então, o Senhor lhe disse:

— Já que esta é a sua atitude e você não obedeceu à minha aliança nem aos estatutos que ordenei a você, certamente tirarei de você o reino e o darei a um dos seus servos. 12 No entanto, por amor a Davi, o seu pai, não farei isso enquanto você viver. Eu o tirarei da mão do seu filho. 13 Contudo, não tirarei dele o reino inteiro; eu darei ao seu filho uma tribo por amor a Davi, o meu servo, e por amor a Jerusalém, a cidade que escolhi.

Os adversários de Salomão

14 Então, o Senhor levantou contra Salomão um adversário, o edomita Hadade, da linhagem real de Edom. 15 Anteriormente, quando Davi estava lutando contra Edom, Joabe, o comandante do exército, que tinha ido para lá enterrar os mortos, exterminara todos os homens de Edom. 16 Joabe e todo o exército israelita permaneceram lá seis meses, até matarem todos os edomitas. 17 Contudo, Hadade, sendo ainda menino, fugiu para o Egito com alguns dos oficiais edomitas que tinham servido ao seu pai. 18 Partiram de Midiã e foram a Parã. Lá reuniram alguns homens e foram ao Egito, até o faraó, rei do Egito, que deu uma casa e terras a Hadade e lhe forneceu alimento.

19 O faraó se agradou tanto de Hadade que lhe deu em casamento uma irmã da sua própria mulher, a rainha Tafnes. 20 A irmã de Tafnes deu-lhe um filho, chamado Genubate, que foi criado por Tafnes no palácio real. Ali Genubate viveu com os próprios filhos do faraó.

21 Enquanto estava no Egito, Hadade soube que Davi tinha descansado com os seus antepassados e que Joabe, o comandante do exército, também estava morto. Então, Hadade disse ao faraó:

— Deixa-me voltar para a minha terra.

22 — O que falta aqui para que você queira voltar para a sua terra? — perguntou o faraó.

— Nada me falta — respondeu Hadade —, mas deixa-me ir!

23 Deus fez outro adversário levantar-se contra Salomão: Rezom, filho de Eliada, que tinha fugido do seu senhor, Hadadezer, rei de Zobá. 24 Quando Davi destruiu o exército de Zobá, Rezom reuniu alguns homens e tornou-se líder deles. Estes foram para Damasco, onde se estabeleceram e assumiram o controle. 25 Rezom foi adversário de Israel enquanto Salomão viveu e trouxe-lhe muitos problemas, além dos causados por Hadade. Assim, Rezom governou Arã e foi hostil a Israel.

A rebelião de Jeroboão contra Salomão

26 Também Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, se rebelou contra o rei. Ele era um dos oficiais de Salomão, um efraimita de Zeredá e cuja mãe se chamava Zerua, que era viúva.

27 Foi assim que ele se rebelou contra o rei: Salomão tinha construído o Milo*11.27 Ou aterro. e havia tapado a abertura no muro da Cidade de Davi, o seu pai. 28 Ora, Jeroboão era um guerreiro valente, e, quando Salomão viu como esse jovem fazia bem o seu trabalho, encarregou-o da supervisão de todo o trabalho forçado das tribos de José.

29 Naquela ocasião, Jeroboão saiu de Jerusalém, e Aías, o profeta de Siló, que estava usando uma capa nova, encontrou-se com ele no caminho. Os dois estavam sozinhos no campo. 30 Então, Aías segurou firmemente a capa nova que estava usando, rasgou-a em doze pedaços 31 e disse a Jeroboão:

— Apanhe dez pedaços para você, pois assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: "Saiba que vou rasgar o reino das mãos de Salomão e dar a você dez tribos. 32 Mas, por amor a Davi, o meu servo, e à cidade de Jerusalém, a qual escolhi dentre todas as tribos de Israel, ele terá uma tribo. 33 Farei isso porque eles me abandonaram*11.33 A Septuaginta, a Vulgata e a Versão Siríaca trazem porque ele me abandonou. e adoraram Astarote, a deusa dos sidônios; Camos, deus dos moabitas; e Moloque, deus dos amonitas. Não andaram nos meus caminhos para fazer o que é justo diante de mim nem obedeceram aos meus estatutos e às minhas ordenanças, como fez Davi, pai de Salomão. 34 Contudo, não tirarei o reino todo das mãos de Salomão; eu o estabeleci governante todos os dias da sua vida por amor a Davi, o meu servo, a quem escolhi e que obedeceu aos meus mandamentos e aos meus estatutos. 35 Tirarei o reino das mãos do filho de Salomão e darei dez tribos a você. 36 Darei uma tribo ao filho de Salomão a fim de que Davi, o meu servo, sempre tenha uma lâmpada diante de mim em Jerusalém, a cidade que eu escolhi para pôr o meu nome. 37 Quanto a você, eu o farei reinar sobre tudo o que o seu coração desejar; você será rei de Israel. 38 Se você obedecer a tudo o que eu ordenar, andar nos meus caminhos e fizer o que é justo diante de mim, obedecendo aos meus estatutos e aos meus mandamentos, como fez Davi, o meu servo, estarei com você. Edificarei para você uma dinastia tão permanente quanto a que edifiquei para Davi e darei Israel a você. 39 Humilharei os descendentes de Davi por causa disso, mas não para sempre".

40 Salomão tentou matar Jeroboão, mas ele fugiu para o Egito, para junto do rei Sisaque, e lá permaneceu até a morte de Salomão.

A morte de Salomão

41 Os demais acontecimentos do reinado de Salomão, tudo o que fez e a sabedoria que teve, constam nos registros históricos de Salomão. 42 Salomão reinou quarenta anos em Jerusalém sobre todo o Israel. 43 Então, descansou com os seus antepassados e foi sepultado na Cidade de Davi, o seu pai, e Roboão, o seu filho, sucedeu-o como rei.
