1 Samuel 24

David Spares Saul’s Life

* In Hebrew texts 24:1-22 is numbered 24:22-23. 1 After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, "David is in the Desert of En Gedi." 2 So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats.

3 He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. 4 The men said, "This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said*24:4 Or "Today the Lord is saying to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’ " Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.

5 Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. 6 He said to his men, "The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord." 7 With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.

8 Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, "My lord the king!" When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. 9 He said to Saul, "Why do you listen when men say, ‘David is bent on harming you’? 10 This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, ‘I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the Lord’s anointed.’ 11 See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life. 12 May the Lord judge between you and me. And may the Lord avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you. 13 As the old saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,’ so my hand will not touch you.

14 "Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea? 15 May the Lord be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand."

16 When David finished saying this, Saul asked, "Is that your voice, David my son?" And he wept aloud. 17 "You are more righteous than I," he said. "You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly. 18 You have just now told me about the good you did to me; the Lord delivered me into your hands, but you did not kill me. 19 When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the Lord reward you well for the way you treated me today. 20 I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands. 21 Now swear to me by the Lord that you will not kill off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family."

22 So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

Davi poupa a vida de Saul

1 Quando Saul voltou da luta contra os filisteus, disseram-lhe que Davi estava no deserto de En-Gedi. 2 Então, Saul tomou três mil dos seus melhores soldados de todo o Israel e partiu à procura de Davi e dos seus homens, perto dos rochedos das Cabras-monteses.

3 Ele foi aos currais de ovelhas que ficavam junto ao caminho; como ali havia uma caverna, Saul entrou nela para fazer as suas necessidades.*24.3 Hebraico: entrou ali para cobrir os seus pés. Davi e os seus soldados estavam bem no fundo da caverna. 4 Estes lhe disseram:

— Este é o dia sobre o qual o Senhor falou a você:*24.4 Ou — Hoje o Senhor diz. "Entregarei nas suas mãos o seu inimigo para que você faça com ele o que quiser".

Então, Davi foi com muito cuidado e cortou uma ponta do manto de Saul, sem que este percebesse.

5 Davi, porém, sentiu a consciência pesada por ter cortado uma ponta do manto de Saul 6 e disse aos seus soldados:

— Que o Senhor me livre de fazer tal coisa ao meu senhor, ao ungido do Senhor, de erguer a mão contra ele, pois é o ungido do Senhor.

7 Com essas palavras, Davi conteve os soldados e não permitiu que atacassem Saul. Este saiu da caverna e seguiu o seu caminho.

8 Então, Davi saiu da caverna e gritou para Saul:

— Ó rei, meu senhor!

Quando Saul olhou para trás, Davi inclinou-se, prostrado, com o rosto em terra 9 e disse:

— Por que o rei dá atenção aos que dizem que eu pretendo fazer-te mal? 10 Hoje o rei pode ver com os teus próprios olhos como o Senhor te entregou nas minhas mãos na caverna. Alguns insistiram que eu te matasse, mas eu te poupei, pois disse: "Não erguerei a minha mão contra o meu senhor, pois ele é o ungido do Senhor". 11 Olha, meu pai, olha para este pedaço do teu manto na minha mão! Cortei a ponta do teu manto, mas não te matei. Agora entende que não há nada nas minhas mãos que indique que eu seja culpado de fazer-te mal ou de rebelar-me. Não te fiz mal algum, embora estejas à minha procura para tirar-me a vida. 12 O Senhor julgue entre mim e ti. Vingue ele os males que tens feito contra mim, mas não levantarei a mão contra ti. 13 Como diz o provérbio antigo: "Dos ímpios vêm coisas ímpias"; por isso, não levantarei a minha mão contra ti.

14 — Contra quem saiu o rei de Israel? A quem está perseguindo? A um cão morto! A uma pulga! 15 O Senhor seja o juiz e nos julgue. Considere ele a minha causa e a sustente; que ele me julgue, livrando-me das tuas mãos.

16 Tendo Davi falado todas essas palavras, Saul perguntou:

— É você, meu filho Davi?

Então, chorou em alta voz.

17 — Você é mais justo do que eu — disse a Davi. — Você me tratou bem, mas eu o tratei mal. 18 Você acabou de mostrar o bem que me tem feito; o Senhor me entregou nas suas mãos, mas você não me matou. 19 Quando é que um homem encontra um inimigo e o deixa ir sem fazer-lhe mal? O Senhor o recompense com o bem, pelo modo com que você me tratou hoje. 20 Agora tenho certeza de que você será rei e de que o reino de Israel será firmado nas suas mãos. 21 Portanto, jure-me pelo Senhor que você não eliminará os meus descendentes nem fará o meu nome desaparecer da família do meu pai.

22 Então, Davi fez esse juramento a Saul. Este voltou para casa, mas Davi e os seus soldados foram para a fortaleza.
