1 Samuel 4

1 And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.

The Philistines Capture the Ark

Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines at Aphek. 2 The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3 When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, "Why did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that he may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies."

4 So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim. And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

5 When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout that the ground shook. 6 Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, "What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew camp?"

When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid. "A god has*4:7 Or "Gods have (see Septuagint) come into the camp," they said. "Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8 We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Be men, and fight!"

10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

Death of Eli

12 That same day a Benjamite ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.

14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, "What is the meaning of this uproar?"

The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, "I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day."

Eli asked, "What happened, my son?"

17 The man who brought the news replied, "Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured."

18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led*4:18 Traditionally judged Israel forty years.

19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, "Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son." But she did not respond or pay any attention.

21 She named the boy Ichabod,*4:21 Ichabod means no glory. saying, "The Glory has departed from Israel"—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, "The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured."

Os filisteus tomam a arca

Nessa época, os israelitas saíram à guerra contra os filisteus. Eles acamparam em Ebenézer, e os filisteus em Afeque. 2 Os filisteus dispuseram as suas tropas em linha para enfrentar Israel, e, intensificando-se o combate, Israel foi derrotado pelos filisteus, que mataram cerca de quatro mil deles no campo de batalha. 3 Quando os soldados voltaram ao acampamento, as autoridades de Israel perguntaram:

— Por que o Senhor deixou que os filisteus nos derrotassem hoje? Vamos a Siló buscar a arca da aliança do Senhor, para que ele vá conosco e nos salve das mãos dos nossos inimigos.

4 Então, mandaram trazer de Siló a arca da aliança do Senhor dos Exércitos, cujo trono está entre os querubins. Os dois filhos de Eli, Hofni e Fineias, acompanharam a arca da aliança de Deus.

5 Quando a arca da aliança do Senhor entrou no acampamento, todos os israelitas gritaram tão alto que o chão estremeceu. 6 Os filisteus, ouvindo os gritos, perguntaram:

— O que significam todos esses gritos no acampamento dos hebreus?

Quando souberam que a arca do Senhor viera para o acampamento, 7 os filisteus ficaram com medo e disseram:

— Os deuses*4.7 Ou um deus. chegaram ao acampamento. Ai de nós! Nunca nos aconteceu uma coisa dessa! 8 Ai de nós! Quem nos livrará das mãos desses deuses poderosos? São os deuses que feriram os egípcios com toda espécie de pragas, no deserto. 9 Sejam fortes, filisteus! Sejam homens, ou vocês se tornarão escravos dos hebreus, assim como eles foram escravos de vocês. Sejam homens e lutem!

10 Então, os filisteus lutaram, e Israel foi derrotado; cada homem fugiu para a sua tenda. O massacre foi muito grande: Israel perdeu trinta mil homens de infantaria. 11 A arca de Deus foi tomada, e os dois filhos de Eli, Hofni e Fineias, morreram.

A morte de Eli

12 Naquele mesmo dia, um benjamita correu da linha de batalha até Siló, com as roupas rasgadas e terra sobre a cabeça. 13 Quando ele chegou, Eli estava sentado na sua cadeira, ao lado da estrada. Estava atento, pois, em seu coração, temia pela arca de Deus. O homem entrou na cidade, contou o que havia acontecido, e a cidade começou a gritar.

14 Eli ouviu os gritos e perguntou:

— O que significa esse tumulto?

Então, o homem correu para contar tudo a Eli. 15 Eli tinha noventa e oito anos de idade, e os seus olhos estavam imóveis, de modo que já não conseguia enxergar. 16 O homem lhe disse:

— Acabei de chegar da linha de batalha; fugi de lá hoje mesmo.

— O que aconteceu, meu filho? — perguntou Eli.

17 O mensageiro respondeu:

— Israel fugiu dos filisteus, e houve grande matança entre os soldados. Também os seus dois filhos, Hofni e Fineias, estão mortos, e a arca de Deus foi tomada.

18 Quando ele mencionou a arca de Deus, Eli caiu da cadeira para trás, ao lado da porta, quebrou o pescoço e morreu, pois era velho e pesado. Durante quarenta anos, ele havia liderado Israel.

19 A sua nora, a mulher de Fineias, estava grávida e perto de dar à luz. Quando ouviu a notícia de que a arca de Deus havia sido tomada e de que o sogro e o marido estavam mortos, entrou em trabalho de parto e deu à luz, mas não resistiu às dores do parto. 20 Enquanto morria, as mulheres que a ajudavam disseram:

— Não se desespere; você teve um menino.

Ela, porém, não respondeu nem deu atenção.

21 Deu ao menino o nome de Icabode,*4.21 Icabode significa glória nenhuma. dizendo: "A glória se foi de Israel", porque a arca de Deus fora tomada e porque o sogro e o marido haviam morrido. 22 Depois, acrescentou: "A glória se foi de Israel, pois a arca de Deus foi tomada".
