Nineveh to Fall

* In Hebrew texts 2:1-13 is numbered 2:2-14. 1 An attacker advances against you, Nineveh.

Guard the fortress,

watch the road,

brace yourselves,

marshal all your strength!

2 The Lord will restore the splendor of Jacob

like the splendor of Israel,

though destroyers have laid them waste

and have ruined their vines.

3 The shields of the soldiers are red;

the warriors are clad in scarlet.

The metal on the chariots flashes

on the day they are made ready;

the spears of juniper are brandished.*2:3 Hebrew; Septuagint and Syriac ready; / the horsemen rush to and fro.

4 The chariots storm through the streets,

rushing back and forth through the squares.

They look like flaming torches;

they dart about like lightning.

5 Nineveh summons her picked troops,

yet they stumble on their way.

They dash to the city wall;

the protective shield is put in place.

6 The river gates are thrown open

and the palace collapses.

7 It is decreed*2:7 The meaning of the Hebrew for this word is uncertain. that Nineveh

be exiled and carried away.

Her female slaves moan like doves

and beat on their breasts.

8 Nineveh is like a pool

whose water is draining away.

"Stop! Stop!" they cry,

but no one turns back.

9 Plunder the silver!

Plunder the gold!

The supply is endless,

the wealth from all its treasures!

10 She is pillaged, plundered, stripped!

Hearts melt, knees give way,

bodies tremble, every face grows pale.

11 Where now is the lions’ den,

the place where they fed their young,

where the lion and lioness went,

and the cubs, with nothing to fear?

12 The lion killed enough for his cubs

and strangled the prey for his mate,

filling his lairs with the kill

and his dens with the prey.

13 "I am against you,"

declares the Lord Almighty.

"I will burn up your chariots in smoke,

and the sword will devour your young lions.

I will leave you no prey on the earth.

The voices of your messengers

will no longer be heard."

A queda de Nínive

1 O destruidor avança contra você, Nínive!

Guarde a fortaleza;

vigie a estrada;

prepare a resistência;

reúna todas as suas forças.

2 O Senhor restaurará o esplendor de Jacó;

restaurará o esplendor de Israel,

embora os saqueadores tenham devastado

e destruído as suas videiras.

3 O escudo dos seus soldados é vermelho;

os seus guerreiros se vestem de escarlate.

Os seus carros de guerra reluzem

quando se alinham para a batalha;

agitam-se as lanças de junípero.*2.3 A Septuaginta e a Versão Siríaca trazem os cavaleiros correm de um lado para outro.

4 Os carros de guerra percorrem loucamente as ruas

e se cruzam velozmente pelos quarteirões.

Parecem tochas de fogo

e se arremessam como relâmpagos.

5 As suas tropas de elite são convocadas,

mas elas vêm tropeçando;

correm para o muro da cidade

para formar a linha de proteção.

6 As comportas dos canais são abertas,

e o palácio desaba.

7 Está decretado:

A cidade irá para o exílio; será deportada.

As jovens tomadas como escravas batem no peito;

o seu gemer é como o arrulhar das pombas.

8 Nínive é como um açude antigo

cujas águas estão vazando.

"Parem! Parem!", gritam,

mas ninguém sequer olha para trás.

9 Saqueiem a prata!

Saqueiem o ouro!

Não há fim para a sua riqueza,

está repleta de todo tipo de objeto de valor!

10 Devastação! Destruição! Desolação!

O coração se derrete, os joelhos vacilam,

os corpos tremem, e o rosto de todos empalidece.

11 Onde está, agora, a toca dos leões?

O lugar em que alimentavam os seus filhotes,

para onde iam o leão, a leoa

e os leõezinhos, sem nada temer?

12 Onde está o leão

que caçava o bastante para os seus filhotes

e estrangulava animais para as suas leoas,

que enchia a sua cova de presas,

e a sua toca, de vítimas?

13 "Eis que estou contra você",

declara o Senhor dos Exércitos.

"Queimarei no fogo os seus carros de guerra,

e a espada matará os seus leões.

Eliminarei da terra a sua caça,

e a voz dos seus mensageiros

jamais será ouvida."
