1 Logo que Roboão firmou o seu poder como rei de Judá, ele e todo o seu povo deixaram de obedecer à Lei de Deus, o Senhor. 2 Eles foram infiéis a Deus, e por isso no quinto ano do reinado de Roboão, Sisaque, rei do Egito, atacou Jerusalém. 3 Ele tinha mil e duzentos carros de guerra, sessenta mil cavaleiros e um exército enorme de líbios, suquitas e etíopes; eram tantos, que não podiam ser contados. 4 Sisaque conquistou as cidades-fortaleza de Judá e marchou contra Jerusalém.

5 Aí o profeta Semaías foi falar com Roboão e com as altas autoridades do país, que se haviam ajuntado em Jerusalém, fugindo de Sisaque. Semaías disse:

— Esta é a mensagem de Deus, o Senhor: "Vocês me abandonaram, e por isso eu os estou entregando nas mãos de Sisaque."

6 Então o rei e as autoridades confessaram o seu pecado e disseram:

— O Senhor Deus é justo!

7 Quando o Senhor viu que eles se haviam arrependido, disse a Semaías:

— Eles se arrependeram, e por isso não vou destruí-los. Daqui a pouco vou salvá-los. Eu não vou usar Sisaque para descarregar a minha ira sobre os moradores de Jerusalém. 8 Mas vou deixar que Sisaque os domine a fim de que eles vejam qual é a diferença entre servir a mim e servir reis estrangeiros.

9 Então o rei Sisaque atacou Jerusalém e a tomou; levou embora todos os tesouros do Templo e do palácio e também os escudos de ouro que Salomão havia feito. 10 Para colocar no lugar deles, o rei Roboão fez escudos de bronze e os entregou aos oficiais encarregados de guardar os portões do palácio. 11 Todas as vezes que o rei ia ao Templo, os guardas pegavam e carregavam os escudos e depois os levavam de volta para a sala dos guardas. 12 Assim Deus acalmou a sua ira e não destruiu Roboão, pois Roboão se arrependeu. E além disso havia gente boa na terra de Judá.

13 O rei Roboão foi ficando cada vez mais forte e continuou a reinar em Jerusalém. Ele tinha quarenta e um anos de idade quando se tornou rei. E governou dezessete anos em Jerusalém, a cidade que o Senhor Deus havia escolhido entre todas as tribos da terra de Israel como o lugar onde devia ser adorado. A mãe de Roboão era Naama, do país de Amom. 14 Roboão fez o que era errado, pois não procurou com todo o coração conhecer a vontade de Deus, o Senhor.

15 Todas as outras coisas que Roboão fez, do princípio até o fim do seu reinado, estão escritas na História do Profeta Semaías e na História do Profeta Ido, conforme está registrado na lista dos antepassados de Roboão. Durante todo esse tempo, Roboão e Jeroboão estiveram em guerra um contra o outro. 16 Ele morreu e foi sepultado na Cidade de Davi, e o seu filho Abias ficou no lugar dele como rei.

1 And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had confirmed the kingdom and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.

2 And it came to pass [that] in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak, king of Egypt, came up against Jerusalem, because they had rebelled against the LORD,

3 with twelve hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemen; and the people [were] without number that came with him out of Egypt: the Lubims, the Sukkiims, and the Ethiopians.

4 And he took the fenced cities which [pertained] to Judah and came to Jerusalem.

5 Then Shemaiah, the prophet, went to Rehoboam and [to] the princes of Judah, that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said unto them, Thus hath the LORD said, Ye have forsaken me, and therefore, I have also left you in the hand of Shishak.

6 And the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and they said, The LORD [is] righteous.

7 And when the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, They have humbled themselves; [therefore], I will not destroy them, but I will deliver them shortly; and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.

8 Nevertheless, they shall be his servants that they may know what it is to serve me and to serve the kingdoms of the nations.

9 So Shishak, king of Egypt, came up against Jerusalem and took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king's house; he took it all; he also carried away the shields of gold which Solomon had made.

10 And in their place King Rehoboam made shields of brass and committed [them] to the hands of the princes of the guard that kept the entrance of the king's house.

11 And when the king entered into the house of the LORD, the guard came and brought them, and [afterward] they returned them again into the guard chamber.

12 And when he humbled himself, the wrath of the LORD turned from him that he would not destroy [him] altogether; and also in Judah things went well.

13 So King Rehoboam was strengthened and reigned in Jerusalem; and Rehoboam [was] forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother's name [was] Naamah, an Ammonitess.

14 And he did evil because he did not prepare his heart to seek the LORD.

15 Now the acts of Rehoboam, first and last, [are] they not written in the book of Shemaiah, the prophet, and of Iddo, the seer concerning genealogies? And [there was] war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.

16 And Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David, and Abijah, his son, reigned in his stead.:
