1 O Senhor diz:
"Babilônia, desça do seu trono
e sente-se no pó.
Você era como uma virgem,
bela, delicada e mimada;
mas nunca mais será assim.
2 Agora, você é uma escrava:
pegue o moinho e comece a moer a farinha.
Tire o véu, levante a saia
e, de pernas de fora, atravesse os rios .
3 Todos a verão sem roupa,
completamente nua .
Eu vou me vingar de você,
e ninguém poderá me impedir."
4 O nosso Salvador é o Senhor Todo-Poderoso,
o Santo Deus de Israel.
5 Ele diz à Babilônia:
"Sente-se e fique calada;
vá para um lugar escuro,
pois nunca mais você será chamada
de ‘Rainha das Nações’.
6 Eu estava irado com o meu povo,
o meu povo escolhido;
por isso, o humilhei
e o entreguei nas suas mãos.
Mas você não foi bondosa com ele;
pelo contrário, tratou até mesmo os velhos com crueldade.
7 Você imaginou que seria rainha para sempre
e não levou a sério o que estava acontecendo,
nem pensou como tudo ia acabar.
8 Você ama a imoralidade
e pensa que não corre nenhum perigo.
Você diz assim:
‘Não há ninguém tão importante como eu;
não há ninguém igual a mim.
Nunca ficarei viúva, nem perderei nenhum dos meus filhos.’
"Mas agora escute o que eu lhe digo:
9 Eu sei que você sabe fazer despachos
e que as suas feitiçarias são poderosas;
mas tudo isso não adiantará nada.
De repente, no mesmo dia,
você vai ficar viúva e vai perder os filhos.
10 Você se sentia segura na sua maldade
e imaginava que ninguém via o que você estava fazendo.
Foram a sua sabedoria e o seu conhecimento que a enganaram.
Você pensava assim:
‘Não há ninguém tão importante como eu.’
11 Por isso, cairá a desgraça sobre você,
e as suas feitiçarias não valerão nada.
A sua destruição está chegando,
e não haverá jeito de escapar dela.
Será uma desgraça como você não imaginava
e virá quando você menos estiver esperando.
12 Fique com os despachos e as feitiçarias
que você tem praticado desde que era jovem.
É possível que eles a ajudem
e que com eles você assuste os seus inimigos.
13 Apesar de todos os conselheiros que tem,
você não poderá escapar.
Que os seus astrólogos se apresentem e a ajudem!
Eles estudam o céu e ficam olhando para as estrelas
a fim de dizer, todos os meses,
o que vai acontecer com você.
14 Pois eles são como palha;
o fogo os destruirá,
e eles não poderão se salvar.
Pois este não é um foguinho
daqueles que a gente faz para se esquentar,
sentando-se bem perto dele.
15 É isso o que acontecerá com os seus adivinhos,
com os quais você tem lidado toda a sua vida.
Todos eles irão embora,
cada um seguindo o seu próprio caminho;
nenhum deles poderá salvar você."

1 "Come down, and sit in the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, daughter of the Chaldeans: for you shall no more be called tender and delicate.2 Take the millstones, and grind meal; remove your veil, strip off the train, uncover the leg, pass through the rivers.3 Your nakedness shall be uncovered, yes, your shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and will spare no man."4 Our Redeemer, the Lord of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.5 "Sit in silence, and go into darkness, daughter of the Chaldeans; for you shall no more be called the mistress of kingdoms.6 I was angry with my people, I profaned my inheritance, and gave them into your hand: you showed them no mercy; on the aged you have very heavily laid your yoke.7 You said, 'I shall be a mistress forever;' so that you did not lay these things to your heart, nor did you remember the latter end of it.8 "Now therefore hear this, you who are given to pleasures, who sit securely, who say in your heart, 'I am, and there is none else besides me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:'9 but these two things shall come to you in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood; in their full measure shall they come on you, in the multitude of your sorceries, and the great abundance of your enchantments.10 For you have trusted in your wickedness; you have said, No one sees me; your wisdom and your knowledge, it has perverted you, and you have said in your heart, 'I am, and there is none else besides me.'11 Therefore disaster will come on you; you won't know when it dawns: and calamity will fall on you; you will not be able to put it away: and desolation shall come on you suddenly and unexpectedly.12 "Stand now with your enchantments, and with the multitude of your sorceries, in which you have labored from your youth; if so be you shall be able to profit, if so be you may prevail.13 You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels: let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save you from the things that shall come on you.14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: it shall not be a coal to warm at, nor a fire to sit before.15 Thus shall the things be to you in which you have labored: those who have trafficked with you from your youth shall wander everyone to his quarter; there shall be none to save you.
