1 O povo de Israel havia feito em Mispa este juramento a Deus:

— Nenhum de nós deixará que um homem da tribo de Benjamim case com uma das nossas filhas.

2 O povo foi a Betel e ficou ali na presença de Deus até a tarde. Eles choraram amargamente, em voz alta, 3 dizendo:

— Ó Senhor, Deus de Israel, por que aconteceu isso? Por que está faltando uma das nossas tribos?

4 O povo se levantou bem cedo na manhã seguinte e construiu ali um altar. Apresentaram ofertas que foram completamente queimadas e sacrifícios de paz. 5 E perguntaram:

— De todas as tribos de Israel, quem foi que não subiu para aquela reunião na presença do Senhor Deus, em Mispa?

Eles tinham feito um juramento muito sério: quem faltasse à reunião em Mispa seria morto.

6 O povo de Israel teve muita pena dos seus irmãos da tribo de Benjamim e disse:

— Hoje Israel perdeu uma das suas tribos. 7 O que faremos para arranjar esposas para os que ficaram? Pois juramos ao Senhor que não daríamos a eles nenhuma das nossas filhas.

8 Então perguntaram:

— De todas as tribos de Israel, quem não compareceu diante do Senhor em Mispa?

E ficaram sabendo que, de Jabes-Gileade, ninguém havia tomado parte na reunião. 9 Quando fizeram a chamada do povo, ninguém de Jabes-Gileade estava lá. 10 Então todos concordaram em mandar para lá doze mil homens, dos mais corajosos, com estas ordens:

— Vão e matem os moradores de Jabes-Gileade, tanto homens como mulheres e crianças. 11 Façam isto: matem todos os homens e todas as mulheres que não forem virgens.

12 E eles encontraram quatrocentas virgens em Jabes-Gileade e as levaram ao acampamento de Siló, que fica na terra de Canaã.

13 Então todos concordaram em mandar mensageiros aos benjamitas, na rocha de Rimom, para fazer uma proposta de paz. 14 Aí os benjamitas voltaram e receberam aquelas quatrocentas moças de Jabes-Gileade. Porém não havia moças em número suficiente para todos. 15 Então o povo ficou com pena dos benjamitas, pois pela vontade do Senhor estava faltando uma das tribos de Israel. 16 Aí os chefes do povo de Israel disseram:

— Não há mais mulheres na tribo de Benjamim. O que vamos fazer para arranjar esposas para os que ficaram? 17 O povo de Israel não deve perder uma das suas doze tribos. Temos de achar um jeito de a tribo de Benjamim não acabar. 18 Porém não podemos deixar que eles casem com as nossas filhas.

Eles falavam isso porque o povo de Israel havia amaldiçoado quem deixasse um benjamita casar com a sua filha. 19 Então disseram:

— A festa anual do Senhor, na cidade de Siló, está perto.

(Siló fica ao norte de Betel, ao sul de Lebona e a leste da estrada que vai de Betel a Siquém.)

20 E os chefes do povo de Israel disseram aos benjamitas:

— Vão, escondam-se nas plantações de uvas 21 e fiquem vigiando. Durante a festa, quando as moças de Siló saírem dançando, vocês também saiam das plantações de uvas. E cada um agarre uma das moças e leve embora para a terra de Benjamim. 22 Assim, quando os pais ou irmãos delas vierem se queixar, nós poderemos dizer: "Por favor, deixem que elas fiquem, pois na batalha contra Jabes-Gileade não conseguimos mulheres para todos os benjamitas. E vocês não serão culpados de quebrarem a promessa, pois não deram as suas filhas a eles: elas foram roubadas."

23 E assim fizeram os benjamitas. Cada um deles escolheu uma esposa entre as moças que estavam dançando e a levou embora. Então voltaram para a sua terra, construíram de novo as suas cidades e ficaram morando ali. 24 Enquanto isso, os outros israelitas saíram, e cada um voltou para a sua tribo, a sua família e as suas terras.

25 Naquele tempo não havia rei em Israel, e cada um fazia o que bem queria.

1 Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, "There shall not any of us give his daughter to Benjamin as wife."2 The people came to Bethel, and sat there until evening before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept severely.3 They said, "Lord God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that there should be today one tribe lacking in Israel?"4 It happened on the next day that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.5 The children of Israel said, "Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who did not come up in the assembly to the Lord?" For they had made a great oath concerning anyone who did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah, saying, "He shall surely be put to death."6 The children of Israel grieved for Benjamin their brother, and said, "There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.7 How shall we do for wives for those who remain, seeing we have sworn by the Lord that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?"8 They said, "What one is there of the tribes of Israel who did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah?" Behold, no one came to the camp from Jabesh Gilead to the assembly.9 For when the people were numbered, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead there.10 The congregation sent there twelve thousand men of the most valiant, and commanded them, saying, "Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones.11 This is the thing that you shall do: you shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman who has slept with a man."12 They found among the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead four hundred young virgins who had never slept with a man; and they brought them to the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.13 The whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin who were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them.14 Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh Gilead: and yet so they weren't enough for them.15 The people grieved for Benjamin, because the Lord had made a gap in the tribes of Israel.16 Then the elders of the congregation said, "How shall we provide wives for those who remain, since the women of Benjamin have been destroyed?"17 They said, "There must be an inheritance for those who are escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe not be blotted out from Israel.18 However we may not give them wives of our daughters, for the children of Israel had sworn, saying, 'Cursed is he who gives a wife to Benjamin.'"19 They said, "Behold, there is a feast of the Lord from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah."20 They commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,21 and watch. If the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards, and each man catch his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.22 It shall be, when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, that we will say to them, 'Grant them graciously to us, because we didn't take wives for each man in battle, neither did you give them to them, otherwise you would now be guilty.'"23 The children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of those who danced, whom they carried off. They went and returned to their inheritance, built the cities, and lived in them.24 The children of Israel departed there at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
