1 Jerubaal, isto é, Gideão, e todos os homens que estavam com ele se levantaram de madrugada e foram acampar perto da fonte de Harode. O acampamento dos midianitas ficava no vale, no lado norte, perto do monte Moré.

2 O Senhor Deus disse a Gideão:

— Você tem gente demais, e por isso não posso deixar que vocês derrotem os midianitas. Se eu deixasse, vocês poderiam pensar que venceram sem a minha ajuda. 3 Anuncie ao povo o seguinte: "Quem estiver com medo, que saia do monte Gilboa e volte para casa."

Gideão anunciou, e vinte e dois mil homens voltaram. Mas dez mil ficaram.

4 E o Senhor disse a Gideão:

— Ainda é gente demais. Leve todos até as águas, e ali eu separarei os que irão com você. Se eu disser que um homem deve ir com você, ele irá. Se disser que outro não deve ir, ele não irá.

5 Aí Gideão fez com que os homens descessem até as águas. E o Senhor Deus lhe disse:

— Todos os homens que lamberem a água com a língua, como fazem os cachorros, devem ser separados dos que se ajoelharem para beber.

6 Trezentos homens juntaram água nas mãos e lamberam. Todos os outros se ajoelharam para beber. 7 Aí o Senhor disse a Gideão:

— Com estes trezentos homens que lamberam a água, eu libertarei vocês e lhes darei a vitória sobre os midianitas. Diga aos outros que voltem para casa.

8 Então Gideão mandou todos os outros israelitas para casa, menos aqueles trezentos. Mas estes ficaram com toda a comida e todas as cornetas. O acampamento dos midianitas estava abaixo deles, no vale.

9 Naquela noite o Senhor Deus disse a Gideão:

— Levante-se e ataque o acampamento dos midianitas. Eu já dei a vitória a você. 10 Mas, se você estiver com medo de atacar, desça até o acampamento deles. Leve junto Purá, o seu ajudante. 11 Você vai ouvir o que eles estão dizendo e então terá coragem para atacar o acampamento.

Gideão e Purá desceram até bem perto do acampamento inimigo. 12 Os midianitas, os amalequitas e os povos do deserto estavam espalhados no vale, como uma nuvem de gafanhotos. Eles e os seus camelos eram tantos como os grãos de areia da praia do mar. 13 Quando Gideão chegou, ouviu um homem contando o seu sonho a um amigo. Ele dizia:

— Eu sonhei que um pão de cevada rolou para dentro do nosso acampamento. Veio e bateu numa barraca. Ela caiu, virou no avesso e ficou estendida no chão.

14 O amigo respondeu:

— É a espada de Gideão, o israelita, o filho de Joás! Isso quer dizer que Deus entregou a ele o nosso povo e todo o nosso exército!

15 Quando Gideão ouviu esse sonho e entendeu o que ele queria dizer, ajoelhou-se e adorou a Deus. Então voltou para o acampamento israelita e disse:

— Levantem-se! O Senhor Deus entregou o exército dos midianitas nas mãos de vocês!

16 Gideão separou os trezentos em três grupos e deu a cada homem uma corneta de chifre de carneiro e um jarro com uma tocha dentro. 17 E disse:

— Olhem para mim! E, quando eu chegar perto do acampamento inimigo, façam o que eu fizer. 18 Quando eu e o meu grupo tocarmos as cornetas, então vocês, que estarão cercando o acampamento, toquem as cornetas e gritem: "Pelo Senhor e por Gideão!"

19 Um pouco antes da meia-noite, na hora de ser trocada a guarda, Gideão e os seus cem homens chegaram bem perto do acampamento. Então tocaram as cornetas e quebraram os jarros que levavam. 20 Os três grupos tocaram as cornetas e quebraram os jarros. Eles seguravam a tocha na mão esquerda e a corneta na direita e gritavam: "Uma espada pelo Senhor e por Gideão!" 21 E cada um ficou parado no seu lugar em volta do acampamento. Então todo o exército inimigo fugiu, gritando. 22 Enquanto os trezentos homens tocavam as cornetas, o Senhor Deus fez com que os homens do acampamento atacassem uns aos outros com as suas espadas. Eles fugiram na direção de Zererá e foram a Bete-Sita e até a divisa de Abel-Meolá, perto de Tabate.

23 Então os homens das tribos de Naftali, de Aser e das duas metades da tribo de Manassés foram chamados e perseguiram os midianitas. 24 Gideão enviou mensageiros para dizerem a todos os que moravam na região montanhosa de Efraim:

— Desçam e lutem contra os midianitas. Defendam o rio Jordão e os seus riachos até Bete-Bara e não deixem os midianitas atravessarem.

Então os homens de Efraim foram e defenderam o rio Jordão e os seus riachos até Bete-Bara. 25 Eles prenderam Orebe e Zeebe, os dois chefes midianitas. Mataram Orebe na pedra de Orebe e mataram Zeebe no seu tanque de pisar uvas. Continuaram a perseguir os midianitas e levaram a cabeça de Orebe e a de Zeebe para Gideão, que estava a leste do rio Jordão.

1 Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.2 The Lord said to Gideon, "The people who are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, 'My own hand has saved me.'3 Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, 'Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.' There returned of the people twenty-two thousand; but ten thousand remained.4 The Lord said to Gideon, "The people are yet too many; bring them down to the water, and I will try them for you there: and it shall be, that of whom I tell you, This shall go with you, the same shall go with you; and of whoever I tell you, This shall not go with you, the same shall not go.5 So he brought down the people to the water: and the Lord said to Gideon, "Everyone who laps of the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, him you shall set by himself; likewise everyone who kneels down on his knees to drink."6 The number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men: but all the rest of the people kneeled down on their knees to drink water.7 The Lord said to Gideon, "By the three hundred men who lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand; and let all the people go every man to his home."8 So the people took food in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the men of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the three hundred men. And the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.9 It happened the same night, that the Lord said to him, "Arise, get down into the camp; for I have delivered it into your hand.10 But if you fear to go down, go with Purah your servant down to the camp:11 and you shall hear what they say; and afterward will your hands be strengthened to go down into the camp." Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outermost part of the armed men who were in the camp.12 The Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley as numerous as locusts; and their camels were without number, as numerous as the sand which is on the seashore.13 When Gideon had come, behold, there was a man telling a dream to his friend; and he said, "Behold, I had a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent collapsed."14 His friend answered, "This is nothing less than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel. Into his hand God has delivered Midian, and all the army."15 It was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and its interpretation, that he worshiped, and he returned into the camp of Israel, and said, "Get up, for the Lord has delivered into your hand the army of Midian."16 He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all of them trumpets, and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers.17 He said to them, "Look at me, and do likewise. And behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so you shall do.18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, "For the Lord and for Gideon."19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and broke in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands.20 The three companies blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands with which to blow; and they called out, "The sword of the Lord and of Gideon.'"21 They each stood in his place every man around the camp; and all the army ran; and they shouted, and put them to flight.22 They blew the three hundred trumpets, and the Lord set every man's sword against his fellow, and against all the army; and the army fled as far as Beth Shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath.23 The men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after Midian.24 Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, "Come down against Midian, and capture the waters, as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan." So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and seized the waters as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan.25 They took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian: and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.
