1 O Senhor Deus disse a Samuel:

— Até quando você vai continuar a ter pena de Saul? Eu não quero mais que ele seja rei de Israel. Encha um chifre com azeite e leve com você. Depois vá a Belém, até a casa de um homem chamado Jessé, pois eu escolhi um dos filhos dele para ser rei.

2 — Como posso fazer isso? — respondeu Samuel. — Se Saul souber disso, ele me mata!

O Senhor Deus respondeu:

— Leve um bezerro e diga que você foi lá para oferecer um sacrifício ao Senhor. 3 Convide Jessé para o sacrifício, e depois eu lhe digo o que fazer. Você ungirá como rei aquele que eu indicar.

4 Samuel fez o que o Senhor Deus havia mandado e foi a Belém. Quando chegou lá, os líderes da cidade foram tremendo encontrá-lo e perguntaram:

— A sua visita é de paz?

5 — Sim! — respondeu ele. — Eu vim oferecer um sacrifício a Deus. Purifiquem-se e venham comigo.

Ele mandou que Jessé e os seus filhos se purificassem e os convidou para o sacrifício.

6 Quando eles chegaram, Samuel viu Eliabe, um dos filhos de Jessé, e pensou:

— Este homem que está aqui na presença de Deus, o Senhor, certamente é aquele que o Senhor escolheu.

7 Mas o Senhor disse:

— Não se impressione com a aparência nem com a altura deste homem. Eu o rejeitei porque não julgo como as pessoas julgam. Elas olham para a aparência, mas eu vejo o coração.

8 Então Jessé chamou o seu filho Abinadabe e o levou a Samuel. Mas Samuel disse:

— Este também não foi escolhido pelo Senhor.

9 Aí Jessé trouxe o seu filho Simeia. E Samuel disse:

— O Senhor Deus também não escolheu este.

10 Assim Jessé apresentou a Samuel sete dos seus filhos. E Samuel disse:

— O Senhor Deus não escolheu nenhum destes.

11 E perguntou a Jessé:

— Você não tem mais nenhum filho?

Jessé respondeu:

— Tenho mais um, o caçula, mas ele está fora, tomando conta das ovelhas.

— Então mande chamá-lo! — disse Samuel. — Nós não vamos oferecer o sacrifício enquanto ele não vier.

12 Aí Jessé mandou buscá-lo. Era um belo rapaz, saudável e de olhos brilhantes. E o Senhor disse a Samuel:

— É este mesmo. Unja-o.

13 Samuel pegou o chifre cheio de azeite e ungiu Davi na frente dos seus irmãos. E o Espírito do Senhor dominou Davi e daquele dia em diante ficou com ele. E Samuel voltou para Ramá.

14 O Espírito do Senhor saiu de Saul, e um espírito mau, mandado por Deus, começou a atormentá-lo. 15 Então os empregados de Saul lhe disseram:

— Sabemos que um espírito mau mandado por Deus está atormentando o senhor. 16 Mande, e nós iremos procurar um homem que saiba tocar lira. Assim, quando o espírito mau vier sobre o senhor, o homem tocará a lira, e o senhor ficará bom de novo.

17 E Saul ordenou:

— Procurem um homem que toque bem lira e o tragam aqui.

18 Um dos empregados respondeu:

— Jessé, da cidade de Belém, tem um filho que é bom músico. Ele também é valente, bom soldado, fala bem, tem boa aparência, e o Senhor Deus está com ele.

19 Aí Saul enviou mensageiros com este recado para Jessé:

— Mande-me o seu filho Davi, aquele que toma conta das ovelhas.

20 Então Jessé mandou Davi a Saul, e Davi levou de presente um odre cheio de vinho, um cabrito e um jumento carregado de pão. 21 Davi foi e ficou trabalhando para Saul. Este gostou muito de Davi e o escolheu para carregar as suas armas. 22 E mandou a seguinte mensagem a Jessé:

— Eu gostei de Davi. Deixe que ele fique aqui a meu serviço.

23 Daí em diante, toda vez que o espírito mau mandado por Deus vinha sobre Saul, Davi pegava a sua lira e tocava. O espírito mau saía de Saul, e ele se sentia melhor e ficava bom novamente.

1 And Yahweh said unto SamuelHow long, art thou going to pine for Saul, seeing that, I, have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill thy horn with oil, and come! let me send thee unto Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided me, among his sons, a king.

2 And Samuel said, How can I go? As soon as Saul heareth, he will slay me. Then said Yahweh, A heifer, take thou with thee, and say, To sacrifice unto Yahweh, am I come.

3 Then shall thou bid Jesse to the sacrifice,when, I, will let thee know what thou must do, so shalt thou anoint for me him whom I shall name unto thee.

4 And Samuel did that which Yahweh had spoken, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him, and one saidPeaceably, comest thou?

5 And he saidPeaceably: to sacrifice unto Yahweh, am I come. Hallow yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he hallowed Jesse and his sons, and bade them to the sacrifice.

6 And it came to pass, when they entered, that he looked upon Eliab,and said to himself, Surely, before Yahweh, is his Anointed.

7 But Yahweh said unto SamuelDo not regard his countenance, or the height of his stature, for I have rejected him,for it is not what man looketh to but what God looketh to. For, man, looketh to the outward appearance, but, Yahweh, looketh to the heart.

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel,and he said, Neither of this one, hath Yahweh made choice.

9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by,and he saidNor of this one, hath Yahweh made choice.

10 So Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel,and Samuel said unto Jesse, Yahweh hath not made choice of these.

11 Then said Samuel unto JesseAre these all the young men? And he saidThere yet remaineth, the youngest, but lo! he is tending the sheep. Then said Samuel unto JesseDo, send, and summon him, for we cannot sit round, until he cometh in hither.

12 So he sent, and brought him in. Now, he, was ruddy, a stripling with handsome eyes, and noble mien. Then said YahwehRiseanoint him, for, this, is, he.

13 And Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren. And the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily upon David, from that day forward. Then arose Samuel, and went his way unto Ramah.

14 But, the spirit of Yahweh, departed from Saul,and there terrified him a sad spirit, from Yahweh.

15 Then said the servants of Saul unto him,Lo! we pray thee, a sad superhuman spirit, doth terrify thee:

16 Pray let our lord bid thy servants before thee, seek out a man, skilled in playing on the lyre,so shall it be, when a sad superhuman spirit cometh on thee, then shall he play with his hand, and thou shalt be joyful.

17 And Saul said unto his servants,I pray you, look out for me a man that excelleth in playing, and bring him in unto me.

18 Then responded one of the young men and saidLo! I have seena son of Jesse, the Bethlehemite, skilled in playing, and a mighty man of valour, and a man of war, and of intelligent speech, and a handsome man, and, Yahweh, is with him.

19 So Saul sent messengers unto Jesse,and said, Send, unto meDavid thy son, who is with the sheep.

20 Then took Jesse an ass laden with bread, and a skin of wine, and one kid,and sent by the hand of David his son, unto Saul.

21 And David came in unto Saul,and stood before him,and he loved him greatly, and he became his armour-bearer.

22 And Saul sent unto Jesse, saying,I pray thee, let David stand before me, for he hath found favour in mine eyes.

23 And so it used to be, when a superhuman spirit came unto Saul, then would David take the lyre, and play with his hand,and Saul would be refreshed, and be joyful, and, the sad spirit, would depart from him.
