1 Pela segunda vez, o Senhor Deus disse a Jonas:

2 — Apronte-se, vá à grande cidade de Nínive e anuncie ao povo de lá a mensagem que eu vou dar a você.

3 Jonas se aprontou e foi a Nínive, como o Senhor Deus havia ordenado. Nínive era tão grande, que uma pessoa levava três dias para atravessá-la a pé. 4 Jonas entrou na cidade, andou um dia inteiro e então começou a anunciar:

— Dentro de quarenta dias, Nínive será destruída!

5 Então os moradores de Nínive creram em Deus e resolveram que cada um devia jejuar. E todos, desde os mais importantes até os mais humildes, vestiram roupa feita de pano grosseiro a fim de mostrar que estavam arrependidos.

6 Quando o rei de Nínive soube disso, levantou-se do trono, tirou o manto, vestiu uma roupa feita de pano grosseiro e sentou-se sobre cinzas. 7 Mandou também anunciar ao povo da cidade o seguinte: "Esta é uma ordem do rei e dos seus ministros. Ninguém pode comer nada. Todas as pessoas e também os animais, o gado e as ovelhas estão proibidos de comer e beber. 8 Que todas as pessoas e animais vistam roupas feitas de pano grosseiro! Que cada pessoa ore a Deus com fervor e abandone os seus maus caminhos e as suas maldades! 9 Talvez assim Deus mude de ideia. Talvez o seu furor passe, e assim não morreremos!"

10 Deus viu o que eles fizeram e como abandonaram os seus maus caminhos. Então mudou de ideia e não castigou a cidade como tinha dito que faria.

1 Then came the word of Yahweh unto Jonah, the second time, saying:

2 Arise, get thee unto Nineveh, the great city,and cry against it the cry that I am bidding thee.

3 So Jonah arose, and went his way unto Nineveh, according to the word of Yahweh,Nineveh, being a city great before God, of three days journey.

4 So Jonah began to enter into the city, one days journey,and he cried out and saidYet forty days, and, Nineveh, is to be overthrown!

5 And the people of Nineveh believed in God,and proclaimed a fast, and clothed themselves in sackcloth, from the greatest of them, even unto the least of them.

6 And the word reached unto the king of Nineveh, so he arose from his throne, and laid aside his robe from off him,and covered him with sackcloth, and sat on ashes.

7 And he caused an outcry to be madeand saidthroughout Nineveh, By decree of the king and of his great men, Be it known:Man and beast, herd and flock, Let them taste, nothing, let them not feed, and, water, let them not drink:

8 Let both man and beast, cover themselves with sackcloth, and let them cry unto God, mightily,Yea let them turn, every man from his wicked way, and from the violence which is in their hands:

9 Who knoweth whether God himselfmay turn and grieve,and turn away from the glow of his anger, that we perish not?

10 And God saw their doings, that they turned from their wicked way,and God was grieved over the calamity which he had spoken of executing upon them, and executed it not.
