1 Povo de Israel, escutem a mensagem de Deus, o Senhor, para vocês! 2 Ele diz:
"Não sigam os costumes de outras nações.
Elas podem ficar espantadas
quando aparecem coisas estranhas no céu,
mas vocês não devem se assustar.
3 A religião dessa gente não vale nada.
Cortam uma árvore na floresta,
e um artista, com as suas ferramentas, faz um ídolo.
4 Então o enfeitam com prata e ouro
e o firmam com pregos
para que não caia aos pedaços.
5 Esses ídolos não podem falar:
são como um espantalho numa plantação de pepinos.
Eles têm de ser carregados porque não podem andar.
Não tenham medo deles:
não podem fazer mal,
nem podem fazer bem."
6 Ó Senhor Deus, não há ninguém igual a ti.
Tu és grande,
e o teu nome é poderoso.
7 Quem não te respeitará,
ó Rei de todas as nações?
Tu mereces todo o respeito.
Não há ninguém como tu
entre todos os sábios das nações.
8 Todos os seus sábios são ignorantes e tolos.
Será que os ídolos de madeira podem lhes ensinar alguma coisa?
9 Esses ídolos são folheados com prata da Espanha e com ouro de Ufaz;
tudo é trabalho de artistas.
Os seus vestidos são roxos e vermelhos,
feitos por tecelões habilidosos.
10 Mas o Senhor é o Deus verdadeiro;
ele é o Deus vivo, o Rei eterno.
Quando o Senhor fica irado, a terra treme;
as nações não podem suportar a sua ira.
11 Digam às nações que os deuses,
que não fizeram a terra e o céu,
serão destruídos.
Eles desaparecerão completamente da terra.
12 Pelo seu poder, o Senhor Deus fez a terra;
com a sua sabedoria, ele criou o mundo
e, com a sua inteligência, estendeu o céu como se fosse uma coberta.
13 Quando Deus dá ordem,
as águas rugem no céu.
Ele manda as nuvens subirem dos fins da terra.
Ele faz o raio para a chuva
e manda o vento sair dos seus depósitos.
14 Diante disso, todos os seres humanos são tolos e ignorantes.
Todos os artistas ficam envergonhados com os ídolos que fazem,
pois são deuses falsos,
deuses que não têm vida.
15 Não valem nada; são uma tapeação.
Serão destruídos quando o Senhor vier castigá-los.
16 O Deus de Jacó não é assim;
foi ele quem fez todas as coisas
e escolheu Israel para ser o seu povo.
O seu nome é Senhor, o Todo-Poderoso.
17 Moradores de Jerusalém, a cidade está cercada pelos inimigos!
Peguem as suas trouxas,
18 porque agora o Senhor
vai jogar vocês para fora desta terra
a fim de que venham a ter juízo.
Sou eu, o Senhor, quem está falando.
19 O povo de Jerusalém grita:
"Estamos gravemente feridos!
As nossas feridas não querem sarar!
E nós pensávamos que podíamos aguentar estas coisas!
20 As nossas barracas estão destruídas,
e as cordas que as seguravam arrebentaram.
Os nossos filhos partiram,
foram todos embora.
Não sobrou ninguém para armar as nossas barracas de novo,
e não há ninguém para colocar as cortinas."
21 Eu respondi:
"As autoridades são tolas:
não pedem que o Senhor Deus as guie.
Foi por isso que elas fracassaram,
e o nosso povo foi espalhado.
22 Escutem! Acabam de chegar notícias!
Há uma grande agitação num país do Norte.
O seu exército vai fazer com que as cidades de Judá virem um deserto,
um lugar onde vivem os lobos."
23 Ó Senhor Deus, eu sei que o ser humano
não é dono do seu futuro;
ninguém pode controlar o que acontece na sua vida.
24 Ó Senhor, corrige o nosso povo,
mas não sejas duro demais.
Não nos castigues quando estiveres irado
porque aí acabarias com toda a nossa gente.
25 Derrama a tua ira sobre as nações que não te adoram,
sobre os povos que te rejeitam.
Pois mataram a nós, os descendentes de Jacó,
e arrasaram o nosso país.

1 The hous of Israel, here ye the word which the Lord spak on you.2 The Lord seith these thingis, Nyle ye lerne aftir the weies of hethene men, and nyle ye drede of the signes of heuene, whiche signes hethene men dreden.3 For the lawis of puplis ben veyn, for whi the werk of hondis of a crafti man hath kit doun with an axe a tre of the forest.4 He made it fair with siluer and gold; with naylis and hameris he ioynede it togidere, that it be not loosid.5 Idols ben maad in the licnesse of a palm tree, and schulen not speke; tho schulen be takun and be borun, for tho moun not go; therfor nyle ye drede tho, for tho moun nether do yuel, nethir wel.6 Lord, noon is lijk thee; thou art greet, and thi name is greet in strengthe.7 A! thou king of folkis, who schal not drede thee? for whi onour is thin among alle wise men of hethene men, and in alle the rewmes of hem noon is lijk thee.8 Thei schulen be preued, vnwise and foolis togidere; the techyng of her vanyte is a tre.9 Siluer wlappid is brouyt fro Tharsis, and gold fro Ophaz; it is the werk of a crafti man, and of the hond of a worchere in metel; iacynct and purpur ben the clothing of tho; alle these thingis ben the werk of werk men.10 Forsothe the Lord is veri God; he is God lyuynge, and a kyng euerlastynge; the erthe schal be mouyd togidere of his indignacioun, and hethene men schulen not suffre the manaassing of hym.11 Therfor thus ye schulen seie to hem, Goddis that maden not heuene and erthe, perische fro erthe, and fro these thingis that ben vndur heuene.12 He is God, that makith the erthe in his strengthe, makith redi the world in his wisdom, and stretchith forth heuenes bi his prudence.13 At his vois he yyueth the multitude of watris in heuene, and he reisith mystis fro the endis of erthe; he makith leitis into reyn, and ledith out wynd of his tresouris.14 Ech man is maad a fool of kunnyng, ech crafti man is schent in a grauun ymage; for whi that that he wellide togidere is fals, and no spirit is in tho.15 Tho ben veyn, and a werk worthi of scorn; tho schulen perische in the tyme of her visitacioun.16 The part of Jacob is not lijk these, for he that formede alle thingis is God of Jacob, and Israel is the yerde of his eritage; the Lord of oostis is name to hym.17 Thou that dwellist in bisegyng, gadere fro the lond thi schenschipe;18 for the Lord seith these thingis, Lo! Y schal caste awei fer the dwelleris of the loond in this while; and Y schal yyue tribulacioun to hem, so that thei be not foundun.19 Wo to me on my sorewe, my wounde is ful yuel; forsothe Y seide, Pleynli this is my sikenesse, and Y schal bere it.20 My tabernacle is distried, alle my roopis ben brokun; my sones yeden out fro me, and ben not; noon is that schal stretche forth more my tente, and schal reyse my skynnes.21 For the scheepherdis diden folili, and souyten not the Lord; therfor thei vndurstoden not, and alle the flok of hem is scaterid.22 Lo! the vois of hering cometh, and a greet mouynge togidere fro the lond of the north, that it sette the citees of Juda in to wildirnesse, and a dwellynge place of dragouns.23 Lord, Y woot, that the weie of a man is not of hym, nether it is of a man that he go, and dresse hise steppis.24 Lord, chastise thou me; netheles in doom and not in thi strong veniaunce, lest perauenture thou dryue me to nouyt.25 Schede out thin indignacioun on hethene men that knewen not thee, and on prouynces that clepiden not thi name to help; for thei eeten Jacob, and deuouriden hym, and wastiden hym, and destrieden the onour of hym.
