1 O Senhor Deus me mandou comprar uma roupa de baixo, isto é, um calção novo, e vesti-lo. Mas disse que eu não o lavasse antes. 2 Eu fiz o que o Senhor mandou: comprei o calção e vesti. 3 Aí o Senhor falou comigo outra vez. Ele disse:

4 — Vá até o rio Eufrates e esconda o calção num buraco na rocha.

5 Eu fui e o escondi perto do rio Eufrates, como o Senhor havia mandado. 6 Algum tempo depois, o Senhor me disse que voltasse ao rio e apanhasse o calção que ele me havia mandado esconder ali. 7 Voltei lá, procurei e achei o lugar onde o havia escondido. Mas o calção tinha apodrecido e não prestava mais.

8 Então o Senhor me falou de novo. Ele disse:

9 — É assim que eu vou destruir o orgulho do povo de Judá e o grande orgulho de Jerusalém. 10 Esse povo mau não quer ouvir o que eu digo e sempre foi teimoso. Eles adoram e seguem outros deuses. Por isso, vão ficar como essa roupa, que não presta mais para nada. 11 E, assim como o calção fica bem justo na cintura, eu gostaria que todo o povo de Israel e de Judá ficasse bem perto de mim. Eu queria que eles fossem o meu povo para darem louvor e glória ao meu nome; mas eles não quiseram me obedecer.

12 Deus me disse:

— Jeremias, fale ao povo de Israel que eu, o Senhor, estou dizendo: Toda jarra de vinho deve ficar bem cheia. Eles vão dizer que sabem muito bem que toda jarra de vinho deve ficar bem cheia. 13 Diga-lhes então que eu, o Senhor, vou encher de vinho o povo desta terra até que todos fiquem bêbados: os reis, que são descendentes de Davi, os sacerdotes, os profetas e todo o povo de Jerusalém. 14 Então quebrarei todos, tanto os velhos quanto os jovens, como se quebram os jarros que são jogados uns contra os outros. Destruirei essa gente sem dó, sem piedade e sem misericórdia.

15 Povo de Israel,

é Deus quem está falando.

Sejam humildes e prestem atenção.

16 Confessem os seus pecados ao Senhor, seu Deus,

antes que ele faça vir a escuridão,

e, no escuro, vocês tropecem nas montanhas.

Vocês esperam a luz,

mas ele a mudará em sombras escuras,

ele a transformará em profunda escuridão.

17 Se vocês não prestarem atenção,

eu chorarei em segredo por causa do seu orgulho.

Chorarei amargamente,

derramarei lágrimas

porque o povo de Deus foi levado como prisioneiro.

18 Deus me disse mais isto:

— Diga ao rei e à mãe do rei que desçam dos seus tronos porque as suas lindas coroas caíram da sua cabeça. 19 As cidades da região sul estão cercadas pelos inimigos, e ninguém pode chegar lá. Todo o povo de Judá foi levado prisioneiro, foram todos levados para fora do país.

20 — Olhe, povo de Jerusalém! Os inimigos vêm vindo do Norte! Onde estão as pessoas que foram entregues para que vocês cuidassem delas? Onde está o povo que é o seu lindo rebanho? 21 O que é que vocês vão dizer quando aqueles que vocês pensavam que eram seus amigos forem colocados acima de vocês, como seus governadores? Vocês vão sentir dores como a mulher que está dando à luz. 22 Jerusalém, você pode perguntar a você mesma: "Por que aconteceu isso comigo? Por que arrancaram as minhas roupas? Por que abusaram de mim?" Então fique sabendo que é porque os seus pecados são muitos.

23 — Por acaso, um homem preto pode mudar a cor da sua pele ou um leopardo tirar as suas manchas? Se isso fosse possível, vocês, que só sabem fazer o mal, também poderiam aprender a fazer o bem. 24 Deus os espalhará como a palha que voa quando sopra o vento do deserto. 25 O Senhor Deus disse que esta será a recompensa de vocês; é isso que vão receber porque vocês o esqueceram e confiaram em falsos deuses. 26 Deus mesmo arrancará as roupas de vocês e os fará passar vergonha. 27 Deus tem visto vocês fazendo coisas que ele detesta. Como um homem que anda atrás da mulher do seu vizinho, como um cavalo que procura a égua, assim vocês vão atrás de deuses pagãos nas montanhas e nos campos. O povo de Jerusalém está condenado! Quando é que vocês vão se purificar?

1 The Lord seith these thingis to me, Go, and take in possessioun to thee a lynnun breigirdil; and thou schalt putte it on thi leendis, and thou schalt not bere it in to watir.2 And Y took in possessioun a breigirdil, bi the word of the Lord; and Y puttide aboute my leendis.3 And the word of the Lord was maad to me in the secounde tyme,4 and seide, Take the brigirdil, which thou haddist in possessioun, which is aboute thi leendis; and rise thou, and go to Eufrates, and hide thou it there, in the hoole of a stoon.5 And Y yede, and hidde it in Eufrates, as the Lord comaundide to me.6 And it was don aftir ful many daies, the Lord seide to me, Rise thou, and go to Eufrates, and take fro thennus the brigirdil, whiche Y comaundide to thee, that thou schuldist hide it there.7 And Y yede to Eufrates, and diggide out, and Y took the breigirdil fro the place, where Y hadde hidde it; and lo! the breigirdil was rotun, so that it was not able to ony vss.8 And the word of the Lord was maad to me,9 and seide, The Lord seith these thingis, So Y schal make rotun the pride of Juda, and the myche pride of Jerusalem,10 and this worste puple, that nylen here my wordis, and goen in the schrewidnesse of her herte; and thei yeden aftir alien goddis, to serue hem, and to worschipe hem; and thei schulen be as this breigirdil, which is not able to ony vss.11 For as a breigirdil cleueth to the leendis of a man, so Y ioynede faste to me al the hous of Israel, and al the hous of Juda, seith the Lord, that thei schulden be to me in to a puple, and in to name, and in to heriyng, and in to glorie; and thei herden not.12 Therfor thou schalt seie to hem this word, The Lord God of Israel seith these thingis, Ech potel schal be fillid of wyn. And thei schulen seie to thee, Whether we witen not, that ech potel schal be fillid of wyn?13 And thou schalt seie to hem, The Lord seith these thingis, Lo! Y shal fille with drunkenesse alle the dwelleris of this lond, and the kyngis of the generacioun of Dauith, that sitten on his trone, and the prestis, and profetis, and alle the dwelleris of Jerusalem.14 And Y schal scatere hem, a man fro his brother, and the fadris and sones togidere, seith the Lord; Y schal not spare, and Y schal not graunte, nether Y schal do mercy, that I leese not hem.15 Here ye, and perseyue with eeris; nyle ye be reisid, for the Lord spak.16 Yyue ye glorie to youre Lord God, bifore that it wexe derk, and bifor that youre feet hirte at derk hillis; ye schulen abide liyt, and he schal sette it in to the schadewe of deeth, and in to derknesse.17 That if ye heren not this, my soule schal wepe in hid place for the face of pride; it wepynge schal wepe, and myn iye shal caste out a teer, for the floc of the Lord is takun.18 Seye thou to the kyng, and to the ladi, Be ye mekid, sitte ye, for the coroun of youre glorie schal go doun fro youre heed.19 The cities of the south ben closid, and noon is that openith; al Juda is translatid bi perfit passyng ouere, ether goynge out of her lond.20 Reise ye youre iyen, and se ye, what men comen fro the north; where is the floc which is youun to thee, thi noble scheep?21 What schalt thou seie, whanne he schal visite thee? for thou hast tauyt hem ayens thee, and thou hast tauyt ayens thin heed. Whether sorewis han not take thee, as a womman trauelynge of child?22 That if thou seist in thin herte, Whi camen these thingis to me? for the multitude of thi wickidnesse thi schamefulere thingis ben schewid, thi feet ben defoulid.23 If a man of Ethiopie mai chaunge his skyn, ether a pard mai chaunge hise dyuersitees, and ye moun do wel, whanne ye han lerned yuel.24 And Y schal sowe hem abrood, as stobil which is rauyschid of the wynd in desert.25 This is thi lot, and the part of thi mesure of me, seith the Lord; for thou foryetidist me, and tristidist in a leesyng.26 Wherfor and Y made nakid thin hipis ayens thi face, and thi schenschipe apperide,27 thin auowtries, and thin neyyng, and the felonye of thi fornycacioun on litle hillis in the feeld; Y siy thin abhomynaciouns. Jerusalem, wo to thee, thou schalt not be clensid after me til yit.
