1 Ao ouvir o relato, o rei Ezequias rasgou as suas vestes, pôs roupas de luto e entrou no templo do Senhor.2 Ele enviou o administrador do palácio, Eliaquim, o secretário Sebna e os sacerdotes principais, todos vestidos com pano de saco, ao profeta Isaías, filho de Amoz.3 Eles lhe disseram: "Assim diz Ezequias: Hoje é dia de angústia, de repreensão e de humilhação; estamos como a mulher que está para dar à luz filhos, mas não tem forças para fazê-los nascer.4 Talvez o Senhor seu Deus ouça todas as palavras do comandante de campo, a quem o senhor dele, o rei da Assíria, enviou para zombar do Deus vivo. E que o Senhor seu Deus o repreenda pelas palavras que ouviu. Portanto, suplique a Deus pelo remanescente que ainda sobrevive".5 Quando os oficiais do rei Ezequias chegaram a Isaías,6 este lhes disse: "Digam a seu senhor: ‘Assim diz o Senhor: Não tenha medo das palavras que você ouviu, das blasfêmias que os servos do rei da Assíria lançaram contra mim.7 Ouça! Eu o farei tomar a decisão de retornar ao seu próprio país, quando ele ouvir certa notícia. E lá o farei morrer à espada’ ".8 Quando o comandante de campo soube que o rei da Assíria havia partido de Láquis, retirou-se e encontrou o rei lutando contra Libna.9 Ora, Senaqueribe fora informado de que Tiraca, rei etíope do Egito, estava vindo lutar contra ele, de modo que mandou novamente mensageiros a Ezequias com este recado:10 "Digam a Ezequias, rei de Judá: Não deixe que o Deus no qual você confia o engane, quando diz: ‘Jerusalém não cairá nas mãos do rei da Assíria’.11 Com certeza você ouviu o que os reis da Assíria têm feito a todas as nações, como as destruíram por completo. E você haveria de livrar-se?12 Acaso os deuses das nações que foram destruídas por meus antepassados as livraram: os deuses de Gozã, Harã, Rezefe e do povo de Éden, que estava em Telassar?13 Onde estão o rei de Hamate, o rei de Arpade, o rei da cidade de Sevarfaim, de Hena ou de Iva? "14 Ezequias recebeu a carta das mãos dos mensageiros e a leu. Então subiu ao templo do Senhor e estendeu-a perante o Senhor.15 E Ezequias orou ao Senhor: "Senhor, Deus de Israel, que reina em teu trono, entre os querubins, só tu és Deus sobre todos os reinos da terra. Tu criaste os céus e a terra.16 Dá ouvidos, Senhor, e vê; ouve as palavras que Senaqueribe enviou para insultar o Deus vivo.17 É verdade, Senhor, que os reis assírios fizeram de todas essas nações e seus territórios um deserto.18 Atiraram os deuses delas no fogo e os destruíram, pois não eram deuses; eram apenas madeira e pedra moldadas por mãos humanas.19 Agora, Senhor nosso Deus, salva-nos das mãos dele, para que todos os reinos da terra saibam que só tu, Senhor, és Deus".20 Então Isaías, filho de Amoz, enviou uma mensagem a Ezequias: "Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: Ouvi a sua oração acerca de Senaqueribe, o rei da Assíria.21 Esta é a palavra que o Senhor falou contra ele: ‘A virgem, a filha de Sião, o despreza e zomba de você. A filha de Jerusalém meneia a cabeça enquanto você foge.22 De quem você zombou e contra quem blasfemou? Contra quem você levantou a voz e contra quem ergueu o seu olhar arrogante? Contra o Santo de Israel!23 Sim, você insultou o Senhor por meio dos seus mensageiros. E declarou: "Com carros sem conta subi, aos pontos mais elevados e às inacessíveis alturas do Líbano. Derrubei os seus mais altos cedros, os seus melhores pinheiros. Entrei em suas regiões mais remotas, e nas suas mais densas florestas.24 Em terras estrangeiras cavei poços e bebi água. Com as solas de meus pés sequei todos os rios do Egito".25 Você não percebe que há muito tempo eu já havia determinado tudo isso. Desde a antigüidade planejei o que agora faço acontecer, que você deixaria cidades fortificadas em ruínas.26 Seus habitantes, sem forças, desanimam-se envergonhados. São como pastagens, como brotos tenros e verdes, como ervas no telhado, queimadas antes de crescer.27 Eu, porém, sei onde você está, sei quando você sai e quando retorna; e como você se enfurece contra mim.28 Sim, contra mim você se enfureceu e o seu atrevimento chegou aos meus ouvidos. Por isso porei o meu anzol em seu nariz e o meu freio em sua boca, e o farei voltar pelo caminho por onde veio.29 A você, Ezequias, darei este sinal: Neste ano vocês comerão do que crescer por si, e no próximo o que daquilo brotar. Mas no terceiro ano semeiem e colham, plantem vinhas e comam o seu fruto.30 Mais uma vez, um remanescente da tribo de Judá sobreviverá, lançará raízes na terra e se encherão de frutos os seus ramos.31 De Jerusalém sairão sobreviventes, e um remanescente do monte Sião. O zelo do Senhor dos Exércitos o executará’.32 Portanto, assim diz o Senhor acerca do rei da Assíria: ‘Ele não invadirá esta cidade nem disparará contra ela uma só flecha. Não a enfrentará com escudo nem construirá rampas de cerco contra ela.33 Pelo caminho por onde veio voltará; não invadirá esta cidade’, declara o Senhor.34 ‘Eu a defenderei e a salvarei, por amor de mim mesmo e do meu servo Davi’ ".35 Naquela noite o anjo do Senhor saiu e matou cento e oitenta e cinco mil homens no acampamento assírio. Quando o povo se levantou na manhã seguinte, o lugar estava repleto de cadáveres!36 Assim Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, desmontou o acampamento e foi embora. Voltou para Nínive e lá ficou.37 Certo dia, enquanto ele estava adorando no templo de seu deus Nisroque, seus filhos Adrameleque e Sarezer mataram-no à espada e fugiram para a terra de Ararate. Seu filho Esar-Hadom foi o seu sucessor.

1 And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of LORD.2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests (covered with sackcloth) to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.3 And they said to him, Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy, for the sons have come to the birth, and there is no strength to bring forth.4 It may be that LORD thy God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which LORD thy God has heard. Therefore lift up thy prayer for the remn5 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.6 And Isaiah said to them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus says LORD, Do not be afraid of the words that thou have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear news, and shall return to his own land. And I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.8 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah, for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.9 And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he comes out to fight against thee, he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying,10 Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Do not let thy God in whom thou trust deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.11 Behold, thou have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly. And shall thou be delivered?12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the sons of Eden that were in Telassar?13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?14 And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it. And Hezekiah went up to the house of LORD, and spread it before LORD.15 And Hezekiah prayed before LORD, and said, O LORD, the God of Israel, who sits [above] the cherubim, thou are the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. Thou have made heaven and earth.16 Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear. Open thine eyes, O LORD, and see. And hear the words of Sennacherib, with which he has sent for him to defy the living God.17 Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,18 and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. Therefore they have destroyed them.19 Now therefore, O LORD our God, save thou us, I beseech thee, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou LORD are God alone.20 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus says LORD, the God of Israel, Whereas thou have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard.21 This is the word that LORD has spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion has despised thee and laughed thee to scorn. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at thee.22 Whom have thou defied and blasphemed? And against whom have thou exalted thy voice and lifted up thine eyes on high? [Even] against the Holy One of Israel.23 By thy messengers thou have defied LORD, and have said, With the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon. And I will cut down the tall cedars of it, and the choice f24 I have dug and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet I will dry up all the rivers of Egypt.25 Have thou not heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? Now I have brought it to pass, that thou should be to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.26 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded. They were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as grain blasted before it is grown up.27 But I know thy sitting down, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy raging against me.28 Because of thy raging against me, and because thine arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou came.29 And this shall be the sign to thee: Ye shall eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same. And in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of it.30 And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.31 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and out of mount Zion those who shall escape. The zeal of LORD shall perform this.32 Therefore thus says LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.33 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come to this city, says LORD.34 For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David's sake.35 And it came to pass that night, that the agent of LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred eighty-five thousand. And when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.37 And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer smote him with the sword, and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead.
