A circuncisão: o sinal da aliança

1 Quando Abrão tinha noventa e nove anos de idade, o Senhor lhe apareceu e disse:

— Eu sou o Deus Todo-poderoso.*17.1 Hebraico: El-Shadai. Ande diante de mim e seja íntegro. 2 Assim, confirmarei a minha aliança entre mim e você e o multiplicarei muitíssimo.

3 Abrão prostrou-se com o rosto em terra, e Deus lhe disse:

4 — Da minha parte, esta é a minha aliança com você. Você será o pai de uma multidão de nações. 5 Já não será chamado Abrão; agora, o seu nome será Abraão,*17.5 Abrão significa pai exaltado; Abraão provavelmente significa pai de muitos. porque eu o constituí pai de uma multidão de nações. 6 Eu o tornarei extremamente fértil; de você farei nações e de você procederão reis. 7 Estabelecerei a minha aliança como aliança eterna entre mim e você e a sua futura descendência, por todas as gerações, para ser o seu Deus e o Deus da sua descendência. 8 Darei a você e à sua descendência, como propriedade perpétua, toda a terra de Canaã, onde você agora é estrangeiro; além disso, serei o Deus deles.

9 — Da sua parte — Deus disse a Abraão —, guarde a minha aliança, tanto você como a sua futura descendência, por todas as gerações. 10 Esta é a minha aliança com você e com a sua futura descendência, aliança que vocês guardarão: todos os do sexo masculino entre vocês serão circuncidados. 11 Vocês serão circuncidados na carne do prepúcio, e esse será o sinal da aliança entre mim e vocês. 12 Pelas próximas gerações, todo menino de oito dias de idade entre vocês terá que ser circuncidado, tanto os escravos nascidos na sua casa quanto os que foram comprados de estrangeiros, que não são da sua descendência. 13 Sejam nascidos na sua casa, sejam comprados com o seu dinheiro, terão que ser circuncidados. A minha aliança, marcada no corpo de vocês, será uma aliança perpétua. 14 Qualquer do sexo masculino que for incircunciso, que não tiver sido circuncidado na carne do prepúcio, será eliminado do meio do seu povo, porque quebrou a minha aliança.

15 Deus também disse a Abraão:

— Quanto a Sarai, a sua mulher, você já não a chamará Sarai; o nome dela será Sara.*17.15 Sara significa princesa.16 Eu a abençoarei e também por meio dela darei a você um filho. Sim, eu a abençoarei, e dela procederão nações e reis de povos.

17 Abraão prostrou-se com o rosto em terra e riu ao pensar consigo: "Poderá um homem de cem anos de idade gerar um filho? Poderá Sara dar à luz aos noventa anos?". 18 Então, Abraão disse a Deus:

— Permite que Ismael viva sob o teu favor!

19 Então, Deus respondeu:

— Na verdade, Sara, a sua mulher, lhe dará um filho, e você o chamará Isaque.*17.19 Isaque significa ele ri. Estabelecerei com ele a minha aliança, que será aliança eterna para a descendência dele. 20 No caso de Ismael, levarei em conta o seu pedido. Também o abençoarei; eu o farei fértil e o multiplicarei muitíssimo. Ele será pai de doze governantes, e dele farei uma grande nação. 21 A minha aliança, porém, eu estabelecerei com Isaque, filho que Sara dará a você no ano que vem, por esta época.

22 Quando terminou de falar com Abraão, Deus subiu e retirou-se da presença dele.

23 Naquele mesmo dia, Abraão tomou o seu filho Ismael, todos os nascidos na sua casa e os que foram comprados com o seu dinheiro — todos os do sexo masculino da sua casa — e os circuncidou na carne do prepúcio, como Deus lhe ordenara. 24 Abraão tinha noventa e nove anos quando foi circuncidado, 25 e Ismael, o seu filho, tinha treze; 26 Abraão e o seu filho Ismael foram circuncidados naquele mesmo dia. 27 Também com Abraão foram circuncidados todos os da sua casa, tanto os nascidos em casa como os comprados de estrangeiros.

1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, Jehovah appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be thou perfect. 2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. 3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, 4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be the father of a multitude of nations. 5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for the father of a multitude of nations have I made thee. 6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after thee. 8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land of thy sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

9 And God said unto Abraham, And as for thee, thou shalt keep my covenant, thou, and thy seed after thee throughout their generations. 10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee: every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 And ye shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of a covenant betwixt me and you. 12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every male throughout your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any foreigner that is not of thy seed. 13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. 16 And I will bless her, and moreover I will give thee a son of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be of her. 17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is a hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? 18 And Abraham said unto God, Oh that Ishmael might live before thee! 19 And God said, Nay, but Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his seed after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

22 And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham. 23 And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him. 24 And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son. 27 And all the men of his house, those born in the house, and those bought with money of a foreigner, were circumcised with him.
