O chamado de Samuel

1 O menino Samuel ministrava diante do Senhor sob a direção de Eli; naqueles dias, raramente o Senhor falava, e as visões não eram frequentes.

2 Certa noite, Eli, cujos olhos estavam ficando tão fracos que já não conseguia enxergar, estava deitado no lugar de costume. 3 A lâmpada de Deus ainda não havia se apagado, e Samuel estava deitado no santuário do Senhor, onde se encontrava a arca de Deus. 4 Então, o Senhor chamou Samuel, e este respondeu:

— Aqui estou.

5 Ele correu até Eli e disse:

— Aqui estou; o senhor me chamou?

Eli, porém, disse:

— Eu não o chamei; volte e deite-se.

Ele foi e se deitou.

6 De novo, o Senhor chamou:

— Samuel!

Samuel se levantou e foi até Eli e disse:

— Aqui estou; o senhor me chamou?

— Meu filho, eu não o chamei; volte e deite-se — respondeu Eli.

7 Ora, Samuel ainda não conhecia o Senhor. A palavra do Senhor ainda não lhe havia sido revelada.

8 O Senhor chamou Samuel pela terceira vez. Ele se levantou, foi até Eli e disse:

— Aqui estou; o senhor me chamou?

Eli percebeu que o Senhor estava chamando o menino 9 e lhe disse:

— Vá e deite-se; se ele o chamar, diga: "Fala, Senhor, pois o teu servo ouve".

Então, Samuel foi deitar-se no seu lugar.

10 Veio o Senhor, colocou-se de pé e o chamou como nas outras vezes:

— Samuel, Samuel!

Samuel respondeu:

— Fala, pois o teu servo ouve.

11 O Senhor disse a Samuel:

— Vou realizar em Israel algo que fará tinir os ouvidos de todos os que ficarem sabendo. 12 Nessa ocasião, executarei contra Eli tudo o que falei contra a família dele, do começo ao fim. 13 Pois eu disse a ele que julgaria a sua família para sempre, por causa do pecado dos seus filhos, do qual ele tinha consciência; os filhos dele blasfemavam contra Deus,*3.13 Conforme uma antiga tradição dos escribas hebreus e a Septuaginta. O Texto Massorético traz os seus filhos amaldiçoavam a si mesmos. mas ele não os puniu. 14 Por isso, jurei à família de Eli: "Jamais se fará expiação pela culpa da família de Eli nem com sacrifício nem com oferta".

15 Samuel ficou deitado até de manhã e, então, abriu as portas da casa do Senhor. Ele teve medo de contar a visão a Eli, 16 mas este o chamou e disse:

— Samuel, meu filho.

— Aqui estou — respondeu Samuel.

17 Eli perguntou:

— O que o Senhor disse a você? Por favor, não esconda de mim. Deus o castigue, e o faça com muita severidade, se você esconder de mim qualquer coisa do que ele tenha dito.

18 Então, Samuel lhe contou tudo sem esconder nada, e Eli disse:

— Ele é o Senhor; que faça o que for bom aos olhos dele.

19 Enquanto Samuel crescia, o Senhor estava com ele e fazia que todas as suas palavras se cumprissem. 20 Todo o Israel, desde Dã até Berseba, soube que Samuel estava confirmado como profeta do Senhor. 21 O Senhor continuou a aparecer em Siló, pois foi ali que o Senhor se revelou a Samuel por meio da sua palavra.

The Lord Calls Samuel

1 The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions.

2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the Lord called Samuel.

Samuel answered, "Here I am." 5 And he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me."

But Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." So he went and lay down.

6 Again the Lord called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me."

"My son," Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down."

7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.

8 A third time the Lord called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me."

Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 So Eli told Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ " So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!"

Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."

11 And the Lord said to Samuel: "See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. 12 At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. 13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God,*3:13 An ancient Hebrew scribal tradition (see also Septuagint); Masoretic Text sons made themselves contemptible and he failed to restrain them. 14 Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’ "

15 Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, 16 but Eli called him and said, "Samuel, my son."

Samuel answered, "Here I am."

17 "What was it he said to you?" Eli asked. "Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you." 18 So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, "He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes."

19 The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord. 21 The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.
