A arca em Asdode e Ecrom

1 Depois que os filisteus tomaram a arca de Deus, eles a levaram de Ebenézer a Asdode 2 e a colocaram dentro do templo de Dagom, ao lado da estátua dele. 3 Quando o povo de Asdode se levantou na madrugada do dia seguinte, lá estava Dagom caído com o rosto em terra, diante da arca do Senhor! Eles levantaram Dagom e o puseram de volta no seu lugar. 4 Na manhã seguinte, quando se levantaram de madrugada, lá estava Dagom caído com o rosto em terra, diante da arca do Senhor! A cabeça e as mãos tinham sido quebradas e estavam sobre a soleira; só o corpo tinha ficado no lugar. 5 Por isso, até hoje, os sacerdotes de Dagom e todos os que entram no seu templo, em Asdode, não pisam na soleira.

6 Depois disso, a mão do Senhor pesou sobre o povo de Asdode e dos arredores, trazendo devastação sobre eles e afligindo-os com tumores.*5.6 A Septuaginta acrescenta Ratos surgiram na região, e a morte e a destruição estavam por toda a cidade.7 Quando os homens de Asdode viram o que estava acontecendo, disseram:

8 Então, reuniram todos os governantes dos filisteus e lhes perguntaram:

— O que faremos com a arca do Deus de Israel?

Eles responderam:

— Levem a arca do Deus de Israel para Gate.

Então, levaram a arca do Deus de Israel.

9 Quando a arca chegou, a mão do Senhor castigou aquela cidade e lhe trouxe grande pânico. Ele afligiu o povo da cidade, jovens e idosos, com uma epidemia de tumores.*5.9 A Septuaginta traz com tumores na virilha.10 Então, enviaram a arca de Deus para Ecrom.

Quando a arca de Deus estava entrando na cidade de Ecrom, o povo começou a gritar:

11 Então, reuniram todos os governantes dos filisteus e disseram:

Porque havia pânico mortal em toda a cidade, e a mão de Deus pesava muito sobre ela. 12 Aqueles que não morreram foram afligidos com tumores, e o clamor da cidade subiu até o céu.

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron

1 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon. 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! 6 The Lord’s hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation on them and afflicted them with tumors.*5:6 Hebrew; Septuagint and Vulgate tumors. And rats appeared in their land, and there was death and destruction throughout the city7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, "The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god." 8 So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked them, "What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?"

They answered, "Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath." So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.

9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic. He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.*5:9 Or with tumors in the groin (see Septuagint)10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.

As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, "They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people." 11 So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and said, "Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it*5:11 Or he will kill us and our people." For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.
