1 Jesus entrou novamente na sinagoga, e ali havia um homem com uma das mãos atrofiada. 2 Eles observavam Jesus de perto para ver se curaria o homem no sábado, procurando um motivo para acusá-lo. 3 Jesus disse ao homem da mão atrofiada:

— Levante-se e venha para o meio.

4 Depois, Jesus lhes perguntou:

— O que é permitido fazer no sábado: o bem ou o mal? Salvar a vida ou matar?

Eles, porém, permaneceram em silêncio.

5 Olhando com raiva para os que estavam à sua volta e, profundamente entristecido por causa do coração endurecido deles, disse ao homem:

— Estenda a mão.

Ele a estendeu, e a mão foi restaurada. 6 Naquele momento, os fariseus saíram com os herodianos e começaram a conspirar para matar Jesus.

7 Jesus retirou-se com os seus discípulos para o mar, e uma grande multidão vinda da Galileia e da Judeia o seguia. 8 Quando ouviram a respeito de tudo o que ele estava fazendo, muitas pessoas procedentes da Judeia, de Jerusalém, da Idumeia, das regiões do outro lado do Jordão e dos arredores de Tiro e Sidom foram atrás dele. 9 Por causa da multidão, ele disse aos discípulos que lhe preparassem um pequeno barco, para evitar que o comprimissem. 10 Pois ele havia curado muitas pessoas, de modo que os que sofriam com doenças se lançavam sobre ele para conseguir tocar nele. 11 Sempre que os espíritos imundos o viam, prostravam-se diante dele e gritavam:

— Tu és o Filho de Deus.

12 Contudo, ele os advertia severamente de que não o fizessem conhecido.

13 Jesus subiu a um monte e chamou a si aqueles que ele quis, os quais vieram para junto dele. 14 Então, escolheu doze, a quem também designou apóstolos,* para que estivessem com ele, fossem enviados a pregar 15 e exercessem autoridade para expulsar demônios.

16 Estes são os Doze que ele escolheu:

Simão, a quem deu o nome de Pedro;

17 Tiago, filho de Zebedeu, e João, o seu irmão, aos quais deu o nome de Boanerges, que significa "filhos do trovão";

18 André;

Filipe;

Bartolomeu;

Mateus;

Tomé;

Tiago, filho de Alfeu;

Tadeu;

Simão, o zelote;

19 e Judas Iscariotes, que o traiu.

20 Então, Jesus entrou em uma casa, e a multidão reuniu-se novamente, de modo que ele e os seus discípulos não conseguiam nem comer. 21 Quando os seus familiares ouviram falar disso, saíram para trazê-lo à força, pois diziam:

— Ele está fora de si.

22 E os mestres da lei que haviam descido de Jerusalém diziam:

— Ele está possuído por Belzebu! É pelo príncipe dos demônios que ele expulsa demônios.

23 Então, Jesus os chamou e passou a ensiná-los por meio de parábolas:

— Como pode Satanás expulsar Satanás? 24 Se um reino estiver dividido contra si mesmo, não poderá subsistir. 25 Se uma casa estiver dividida contra si mesma, também não poderá subsistir. 26 Se Satanás se levantar contra si mesmo e estiver dividido, não poderá subsistir; chegou o seu fim. 27 De fato, ninguém pode entrar na casa do homem forte e levar os seus bens sem antes amarrá-lo. Só então poderá roubar a casa dele. 28 Em verdade lhes digo que serão perdoados todos os pecados dos homens e as blasfêmias que venham a proferir, 29 mas quem blasfemar contra o Espírito Santo nunca terá perdão: é culpado de pecado eterno.

30 Jesus disse isso porque afirmavam: "Ele está possuído por um espírito imundo".

31 Então, chegaram a mãe e os irmãos de Jesus. Ficando do lado de fora, mandaram chamá-lo. 32 Havia uma multidão sentada ao seu redor, e lhe disseram:

— A tua mãe e os teus irmãos estão lá fora e te procuram.

33 — Quem é a minha mãe e quem são os meus irmãos? — perguntou ele.

34 Então, olhou para os que estavam sentados ao seu redor e disse:

— Aqui estão minha mãe e meus irmãos! 35 Pois quem faz a vontade de Deus, esse é meu irmão, minha irmã e minha mãe.

1 Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. 2 Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. 3 Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Stand up in front of everyone."

4 Then Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent.

5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. 6 Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.

7 Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed. 8 When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon. 9 Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. 10 For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him. 11 Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, "You are the Son of God." 12 But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.

13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve* that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons. 16 These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), 17 James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means "sons of thunder"), 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

20 Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. 21 When his family* heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, "He is out of his mind."

22 And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons."

23 So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: "How can Satan drive out Satan?24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.26 And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come.27 In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man’s house.28 Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter,29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin."

30 He said this because they were saying, "He has an impure spirit."

31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, "Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you."

33 "Who are my mother and my brothers?" he asked.

34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, "Here are my mother and my brothers!35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother."
