1 Quando se aproximava o dia de sua morte, Davi deu instruções ao seu filho Salomão:2 "Estou para seguir o caminho de toda a terra. Por isso, seja forte e seja homem.3 Obedeça ao que o Senhor, o seu Deus, exige: Ande nos seus caminhos e obedeça aos seus decretos, aos seus mandamentos, às suas ordenanças e aos seus testemunhos, conforme se acham escritos na Lei de Moisés; assim você prosperará em tudo o que fizer e por onde quer que for,4 e o Senhor manterá a promessa que me fez: ‘Se os seus descendentes cuidarem de sua conduta, e se me seguirem fielmente de todo o coração e de toda a alma, você jamais ficará sem descendente no trono de Israel’.5 "Você sabe muito bem o que Joabe, filho de Zeruia, me fez; o que fez com os dois comandantes dos exércitos de Israel, Abner, filho de Ner, e Amasa, filho de Jéter. Ele os matou, derramando sangue em tempos de paz; agiu como se estivesse em guerra, e com aquele sangue manchou o seu cinto e as suas sandálias.6 Proceda com a sabedoria que você tem, e não o deixe envelhecer e descer em paz à sepultura.7 "Mas seja bondoso com os filhos de Barzilai, de Gileade, admita-os entre os que comem à mesa com você, pois eles me apoiaram quando fugi do seu irmão Absalão.8 "Saiba que também está com você Simei, filho de Gera, o benjamita de Baurim. Ele lançou terríveis maldições contra mim no dia em que fui a Maanaim. Mas depois desceu ao meu encontro no Jordão e lhe prometi jurando pelo Senhor que não o mataria à espada.9 Mas, agora, não o considere inocente. Você é um homem sábio e saberá o que fazer com ele; apesar de ele já ser idoso, faça-o descer ensangüentado à sepultura".10 Então Davi descansou com os seus antepassados e foi sepultado na cidade de Davi.11 Ele reinou quarenta anos em Israel: sete anos em Hebrom e trinta e três em Jerusalém.12 Salomão assentou-se no trono de Davi, seu pai, e o seu reinado foi firmemente estabelecido.13 Adonias, o filho de Hagite, foi até Bate-Seba, mãe de Salomão. E esta lhe perguntou: "Você vem em paz? " Ele respondeu: "Sim".14 E acrescentou: "Tenho algo para lhe dizer". Ela disse: Fale!15 "Você sabe", disse ele, "que o reino era meu. Todo o Israel me via como o seu rei. Mas as circunstâncias mudaram, e o reino foi para o meu irmão; pois o Senhor o concedeu a ele.16 Agora, quero fazer-lhe um pedido e espero que não me seja negado. " Ela disse: "Fale! "17 Então ele prosseguiu: "Peça, por favor, ao rei Salomão que me dê a sunamita Abisague por mulher, pois ele não deixará de atender você".18 "Está bem", respondeu Bate-Seba, "falarei com o rei em seu favor. "19 Quando Bate-Seba foi falar ao rei em favor de Adonias, Salomão levantou-se para recebê-la e inclinou-se diante dela. Depois assentou-se no seu trono, mandou que trouxessem um trono para a sua mãe, e ela se assentou à sua direita.20 "Tenho um pequeno pedido para lhe fazer", disse ela. "Não deixe de me atender. " O rei respondeu: "Faça o pedido, minha mãe; não deixarei de atendê-lo".21 Então ela disse: "Dê a sunamita Abisague por mulher a seu irmão Adonias".22 O rei Salomão perguntou à sua mãe: "Por que você pede somente a sunamita Abisague para Adonias? "25 E o rei Salomão deu ordem a Benaia, filho de Joiada, e este feriu e matou Adonias.26 Ao sacerdote Abiatar o rei ordenou: "Vá para Anatote, para as suas terras! Você merece morrer, mas hoje eu não o matarei, pois você carregou a arca do Soberano Senhor diante de Davi, meu pai, e partilhou de todas as aflições dele".27 Então Salomão expulsou Abiatar do sacerdócio do Senhor, cumprindo a palavra que o Senhor tinha dito em Siló a respeito da família de Eli.28 Quando a notícia chegou a Joabe, que havia conspirado com Adonias, ainda que não com Absalão, ele fugiu para a Tenda do Senhor e agarrou-se às pontas do altar.29 Foi dito ao rei Salomão que Joabe havia se refugiado na Tenda do Senhor e estava ao lado do altar. Então Salomão ordenou a Benaia, filho de Joiada: "Vá matá-lo! "30 Então Benaia entrou na Tenda do Senhor e disse a Joabe: "O rei lhe ordena que saia". "Não", respondeu ele, "Vou morrer aqui". Benaia relatou ao rei a resposta de Joabe.31 Então o rei ordenou a Benaia: "Faça o que ele diz. Mate-o e sepulte-o, e assim você retirará de mim e da minha família a culpa do sangue inocente que Joabe derramou.32 O Senhor fará recair sobre a cabeça dele o sangue que derramou: ele atacou dois homens mais justos e melhores do que ele, sem o conhecimento de meu pai Davi, e os matou à espada. Os dois homens eram Abner, filho de Ner, comandante do exército de Israel, e Amasa, filho de Jéter, comandante do exército de Judá.33 Que o sangue deles recaia sobre a cabeça de Joabe e sobre a dos seus descendentes para sempre. Mas que a paz do Senhor esteja para sempre sobre Davi, sobre os seus descendentes, sobre a sua dinastia e sobre o seu trono".34 Então Benaia, filho de Joiada, foi e atacou Joabe e o matou, e ele foi sepultado em sua casa no campo.35 No lugar dele o rei nomeou Benaia, filho de Joiada, no comando do exército, e o sacerdote Zadoque no lugar de Abiatar.36 Depois o rei mandou chamar Simei e lhe ordenou: "Construa para você uma casa em Jerusalém. Você morará nela e não poderá ir para nenhum outro lugar.37 Esteja certo de que no dia em que sair e atravessar o vale de Cedrom, você será morto; e você será responsável por sua própria morte".38 Simei respondeu ao rei: "A ordem do rei é boa! O teu servo lhe obedecerá". E Simei permaneceu em Jerusalém por muito tempo.39 Mas três anos depois, dois escravos de Simei fugiram para a casa de Aquis, filho de Maaca, rei de Gate. Alguém contou a Simei: "Seus escravos estão em Gate".40 Então Simei selou um jumento e foi até Aquis, em Gate, procurar os seus escravos. E de lá Simei trouxe os escravos de volta.41 Quando Salomão soube que Simei tinha ido a Gate e voltado a Jerusalém,42 mandou chamá-lo e lhe perguntou: "Eu não fiz você jurar pelo Senhor e não o adverti: No dia em que você for para qualquer outro lugar, esteja certo que você morrerá? E você me respondeu: ‘Esta ordem é boa! Obedecerei’.43 Por que não manteve o juramento ao Senhor e não obedeceu à ordem que lhe dei? "44 E acrescentou: "No seu coração você sabe como você prejudicou o meu pai Davi. Agora o Senhor faz recair sua maldade sobre a sua cabeça.45 Mas o rei Salomão será abençoado, e o trono de Davi será estabelecido perante o Senhor para sempre".46 Então o rei deu ordem a Benaia, filho de Joiada, e este atacou Simei e o matou. Assim o reino ficou bem estabelecido nas mãos de Salomão.

1 David was about to die. He called his son Solomon and gave him his last instructions:2 »It is my time to die. I go the way of all people of the earth. Be strong and be a man.3 »Do what Jehovah your God orders you to do. Obey all his laws and commands, as written in the Law of Moses. That way wherever you go you may prosper in everything you do.4 »‘If you obey Jehovah he will keep the promise he made when he told me, ‘Your descendants will rule Israel as long as they are careful to obey my commands faithfully with all their heart and being.’5 »Remember what Joab did to me by killing the two commanders of Israel's armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether. You remember how he murdered them in time of peace. This was revenge for deaths they had caused in time of war. He killed innocent men. I bear the responsibility for what he did. I suffer the consequences.6 »You know what to do. You must not let him die a natural death.7 »But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai from Gilead and take care of them. They were kind to me when I was fleeing from your brother Absalom.8 "There is also Shimei son of Gera, from the town of Bahurim in Benjamin. He cursed me with a bitter curse the day I went to Mahanaim. When he met me at the Jordan River, I gave him my solemn promise in the name of Jehovah, saying, ‘I will not have you killed by the sword.’«9 »However you must not let him go unpunished. You know what to do. You must make sure he is put to death.«10 David died and was buried in David's City.11 He was king of Israel for forty years. He ruled seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.12 Solomon succeeded his father David as king. His royal power was firmly established.13 Adonijah, son of Haggith, went to Bathsheba, Solomon's mother. »Is this a friendly visit?« She asked. »Yes,« he answered.14 I have something to discuss with you. He said. What is it? She asked.15 He said: »You know the kingship was mine. All Israel expected me to be their king. But the kingship has been turned over to my brother because Jehovah gave it to him.16 »I have one request to make to you. Do not say no to me.« She responded: »Tell me.«17 He said: »Will you go to Solomon the king for he will not say ‘No’ to you. And make my request that he give me Abishag the Shunammite for a wife?«18 Bathsheba said: »Indeed, I will make your request to the king.«19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to talk to him for Adonijah. The king stood up to meet her and bowed down to her. He took his place on the king's throne and she sat at his right hand on the seat made ready for the king's mother.20 Then she said: »I have one small request to make of you. Do not say ‘No’ to me.« The king replied: »Speak mother for I will not say no to you.«21 She said: »Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother for a wife.«22 Then King Solomon answered: »Why are you requesting me to give Abishag the Shunammite to Adonijah? Take the kingdom for him in addition, for he is my older brother, and Abiathar the priest and Joab, the son of Zeruiah, are on his side.«23 King Solomon took an oath by Jehovah, saying: »May God's punishment be on me if Adonijah does not give payment for these words with his life.24 »Now by the living God Jehovah who has given me my throne from David my father. He made me one of a line of kings. He gave me his word. Adonijah will be put to death this day.«25 King Solomon sent Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada to attack and kill him.26 The king spoke to Abiathar the priest: »Go to your fields at Anathoth. You deserve death. But I will not put you to death now, because you carried the Ark of Jehovah God before David my father. You were with him in all his troubles.«27 Solomon did not allow Abiathar to be priest any longer. So the word of Jehovah came true concerning the sons of Eli in Shiloh.28 Joab received news of this for Joab had been one of Adonijah's supporters. He was not on Absalom's side. Then Joab went in flight to the Tent of Jehovah and put his hands on the corners of the altar.29 When King Solomon heard about this he sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada to kill him.30 Benaiah went to the Tent of Jehovah and told Joab: Come out. Joab said: »No! Let me die here.« So Benaiah returned to the king and gave him the answer Joab gave him.31 The king said: »Do as he said. Kill him there and bury him in the earth. This will remove the guilt of his senseless murders from my father’s family and me.32 »Jehovah will punish Joab for those murders he committed without my father David's knowledge. Joab killed two innocent men who were better men than he: Abner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa, commander of the army of Judah.33 »Jehovah will repay him for the blood Joab shed. The blood will fall on Joab and on his descendants as long as they live. Jehovah will always give success to David's descendants who sit on his throne.«34 So Benaiah went to the Tent of Jehovah’s presence and killed Joab. He was buried at his home in the wilderness.35 The king made Benaiah commander of the army in Joab's place and put Zadok the priest in Abiathar's place.36 The king sent for Shimei and said to him: »Build a house for yourself here in Jerusalem. Live in it and do not leave the city.37 »If you ever leave and go beyond Kidron Brook, you will die and it will be your fault.«38 »As you say, Your Majesty,« Shimei answered. »I will do what you say.« So he lived in Jerusalem a long time.39 Three years later, however, two of Shimei's slaves ran away to the king of Gath, Achish son of Maacah. When Shimei heard that they were in Gath,40 he saddled his donkey and went to King Achish in Gath, to find his slaves. He found them and brought them back home.41 When Solomon heard what Shimei did,42 he sent for him and said: »I made you promise in Jehovah’s name not to leave Jerusalem. I warned you that if you ever did, you would die. Did you not agree to it and say that you would obey me?43 »Why did you break your promise and disobey my command?44 »You know very well all the wrong that you did to my father David. Jehovah will punish you for it.45 »But he will bless me, and he will make David's kingdom secure forever.«46 The king gave orders to Benaiah son of Jehoiada. He killed Shimei. Solomon was now in complete control.
