1 A fome continuava rigorosa na terra.2 Assim, quando acabou todo o trigo que os filhos de Jacó tinham trazido do Egito, seu pai lhes disse: "Voltem e comprem um pouco mais de comida para nós".3 Mas Judá lhe disse: "O homem nos advertiu severamente: ‘Não voltem à minha presença, a não ser que tragam o seu irmão’.4 Se enviares o nosso irmão conosco, desceremos e compraremos comida para ti.5 Mas se não o enviares conosco, não iremos, porque foi assim que o homem falou: ‘Não voltem à minha presença, a não ser que tragam o seu irmão’ ".6 Israel perguntou: "Por que me causaram esse mal, contando àquele homem que tinham outro irmão? "7 E lhe responderam: "Ele nos interrogou sobre nós e sobre nossa família. E também nos perguntou: ‘O pai de vocês ainda está vivo? Vocês têm outro irmão? ’ Nós simplesmente respondemos ao que ele nos perguntou. Como poderíamos saber que ele exigiria que levássemos o nosso irmão? "8 Então disse Judá a Israel, seu pai: "Deixa o jovem ir comigo e partiremos imediatamente, a fim de que tu, nós e nossas crianças sobrevivamos e não venhamos a morrer.9 Eu me comprometo pessoalmente pela segurança dele; podes me considerar responsável por ele. Se eu não o trouxer de volta e não o colocar bem aqui na tua presença, serei culpado diante de ti pelo resto da minha vida.10 Como se vê, se não tivéssemos demorado tanto, já teríamos ido e voltado duas vezes".11 Então Israel, seu pai, lhes disse: "Se tem que ser assim, que seja! Coloquem alguns dos melhores produtos da nossa terra na bagagem e levem-nos como presente ao tal homem: um pouco de bálsamo, um pouco de mel, algumas especiarias e mirra, algumas nozes de pistache e amêndoas.12 Levem prata em dobro, e devolvam a prata que foi colocada de volta na boca da bagagem de vocês. Talvez isso tenha acontecido por engano.13 Peguem também o seu irmão e voltem àquele homem.14 Que o Deus Todo-poderoso lhes conceda misericórdia diante daquele homem, para que ele permita que o seu outro irmão e Benjamim voltem com vocês. Quanto a mim, se ficar sem filhos, sem filhos ficarei".15 Então os homens desceram ao Egito, levando o presente, prata em dobro e Benjamim, e foram à presença de José.16 Quando José viu Benjamim junto com eles, disse ao administrador de sua casa: "Leve estes homens à minha casa, mate um animal e prepare-o; eles almoçarão comigo ao meio-dia".17 Ele fez o que lhe fora ordenado e levou-os à casa de José.18 Eles ficaram com medo quando foram levados à casa de José, e pensaram: "Trouxeram-nos aqui por causa da prata que foi devolvida às nossas bagagens na primeira vez. Ele quer atacar-nos, subjugar-nos, tornar-nos escravos e tomar de nós os nossos jumentos".19 Por isso, dirigiram-se ao administrador da casa de José e lhe disseram à entrada da casa:20 "Ouça, senhor! A primeira vez que viemos aqui foi realmente para comprar comida.21 Mas no lugar em que paramos para pernoitar, abrimos nossas bagagens e cada um de nós encontrou sua prata, na quantia exata. Por isso a trouxemos de volta conosco,22 além de mais prata, para comprar comida. Não sabemos quem pôs a prata em nossa bagagem".23 "Fiquem tranqüilos", disse o administrador. "Não tenham medo. O seu Deus, o Deus de seu pai, foi quem lhes deu um tesouro em suas bagagens, porque a prata de vocês eu recebi. " Então soltou Simeão e o levou à presença deles.24 Em seguida os levou à casa de José, deu-lhes água para lavarem os pés e forragem para os seus jumentos.25 Eles então prepararam o presente para a chegada de José ao meio-dia, porque ficaram sabendo que iriam almoçar ali.26 Quando José chegou, eles o presentearam com o que tinham trazido e curvaram-se diante dele até o chão.27 Ele então lhes perguntou como passavam e disse em seguida: "Como vai o pai de vocês, o homem idoso de quem me falaram? Ainda está vivo? "28 Eles responderam: "Teu servo, nosso pai, ainda vive e passa bem". E se curvaram para prestar-lhe honra.29 Olhando ao redor e vendo seu irmão Benjamim, filho de sua mãe, José perguntou: "É este o irmão caçula de quem me falaram? " E acrescentou: "Deus lhe conceda graça, meu filho".30 Profundamente emocionado por causa de seu irmão, José apressou-se em sair à procura de um lugar para chorar, e entrando em seu quarto, chorou.31 Depois de lavar o rosto, saiu e, controlando-se, disse: "Sirvam a comida".32 Serviram a ele em separado dos seus irmãos e também dos egípcios que comiam com ele, porque os egípcios não podiam comer com os hebreus, pois isso era sacrilégio para eles.33 Seus irmãos foram colocados à mesa perante ele por ordem de idade, do mais velho ao mais moço, e olhavam perplexos uns para os outros.34 Então lhes serviram da comida da mesa de José, e a porção de Benjamim era cinco vezes maior que a dos outros. E eles festejaram e beberam à vontade.

1 The famine was extremely bad in the land.2 When they finished eating the grain they brought from Egypt, Israel said to his sons: »Go back and buy us a little more food.«3 Judah said to him: »The man gave us strict warning! The man said to us: ‘You will not be allowed to see me again unless your brother is with you.’«6 Israel asked: »Why have you made trouble for me by telling the man you had another brother?«7 They answered: »The man kept asking about our family and us. He asked, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ We simply answered his questions. How could we possibly know he would say, ‘Bring your brother here’?«8 Then Judah said to his father Israel: »Send the boy along with me. Let us get going so that we will not starve to death.9 »I guarantee that he will come back. You can hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and place him here in front of you, you can blame me the rest of my life.10 »If we had not waited so long, we could have made this trip twice by now.«11 Their father Israel said: »If that is the way it has to be, then take the man a gift. Put some of the best products of the land in your bags. Take a little balm, a little honey, gum, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds.12 »Take twice as much money with you, because you must take back the money that was returned in the top of your sacks. Maybe it was a mistake.13 »Take your brother and return at once.14 »May God Almighty cause the man to have pity on you, so that he will give Benjamin and your other brother back to you. As for me, if I must lose my children, I must lose them.«15 So the brothers took the gifts and twice as much money, and set out for Egypt with Benjamin. There they presented themselves to Joseph.16 He saw Benjamin and told the servant in charge of his house: »Take these men to my house. Slaughter an animal and cook it, so they can eat with me at noon.«17 The servant did as he was told. He took the brothers to Joseph’s house.18 On the way they were worried and started talking: »We are being taken there because of the money that was put back in our sacks last time. He will arrest us and take our donkeys. He will make us his slaves!«19 When they arrived at Joseph’s house, they said to the servant in charge:20 »We came to Egypt once before to buy grain.21 »When we stopped for the night, we each found in our grain sacks the exact amount we had paid. We have brought that money back.22 »We brought enough money to buy more grain. We do not know who put the money in our sacks.«23 »It is all right,« the servant replied. »Do not worry. The God you and your father worship must have put the money there, because your money came first to me.« Then he brought Simeon out to them.24 The servant took them into Joseph’s house. He gave them water to wash their feet. He also tended their donkeys.25 The brothers prepared their gifts so they could give them to Joseph at noon. For they had heard they were going to eat there.26 Joseph came home and they gave him the gifts they had brought. They bowed down to him.27 Joseph asked how they were. He said: »What about your elderly father? Is he still alive?«28 They answered: »Your servant our father is still alive and well.« Again they bowed down to Joseph.29 Joseph looked around and saw his brother Benjamin. He said: »This must be the youngest brother you told me about. God bless you, my son.«30 Right away he rushed off to his room and cried because of his love for Benjamin.31 After washing his face and returning, he was able to control himself. He said: »Serve the meal!«32 Joseph was served at a table by himself. His brothers were served at another. The Egyptians sat at yet another table. This is because Egyptians felt it was disgusting to eat with Hebrews.33 To the surprise of Joseph’s brothers, they were seated in front of him according to their ages, from the oldest to the youngest.34 They were served food from Joseph’s table. And Benjamin was given five times as much as each of the others. So Joseph’s brothers drank with him and had a good time.
